Took photo of tower, puzzled that it had a different name. Then realised that it was the wrong tower, so walked round to the other side of the supermarket to the correct one. Would think theres a good view across the city from the roof but doubt the aerials are the ones used by the OS.

Flagstaff, centre and comms clutter visible. Nice tower but I thought the name was Killingbeck Hospital.
Warm afternoon. Preferred the view of this from a distance rather than close-up.
Junction of Harehills Lane and York Road. Footbridge not quite high enough to see the roof of this slightly neglected building.
Easily found on a dandelion and daisy-covered mini-hill. Good views across Leeds and the Aire valley.
Tower but no dome. OS trig marks database states 'Dest 1965'. Satellite view confirms that the tower now has a flat roof.
SE02/T104 Haslingden church tower flagstaff. The station also includes a vane, centre and bolt; the latter of these not checked. Also flush bracket 0441/S

SE02/INT012 Bacup St Saviour church spire
Exposed and very easy to find on verge between path and road. The mark could be a brass rod rather than a bolt or rivet.
Church spire. Heard a cuckoo for the first time in 2 years.

Easily found in gateway on W side of road, just N of farm track jn with Dog Kennel Lane. Large cut BM with rivet on the gatepost.
Demolition has started on the pit head baths - the last remaining building at Kiveton colliery. Virtual chimney.
TA12/INT008. St Augustine's - visible from a distance in this flat countryside. Flagstaff recorded as 'Dest 04/74' but theres one there today. So unclear if that should count as 'good', 'destroyed' or 'moved'. Visited for the Flush Bracket but noted that its in the OS trig marks database as well.
Church to SE of village; nice setting.
St Marys. Gates padlocked, windows boarded-up and churchyard looking slightly neglected.

St Nicholas
Previously visited a few weeks back but the site was covered in snow and I soon gave up. Subsequently obtained the OS station sketch and description from the National Archives and this was a great help. Rivet in kerbstone. Located between N and S carriageways of Otley Road; N side of crossing opposite Lawnswood Gardens; SE corner of kerb.
Church spire. Failed to notice the mice but this was the trademark of Robert Thompson, carpenter in nearby Kilburn.

Via Aldwark Toll bridge (no charge for pedestrians :) Tower viewed through roadside hedge, W of village.

Flagstaff visible. Church setting spoiled by proximity of busy road which cuts it off from the town centre.
Obelisk in woodland clearing. Immediate views rather limited; perhaps the monument's construction preceded the trees.
Steps up through the wood from the main entrance. Pillar recently painted. Plug replaced by cover. Good views to the SW.
Intersected point SJ44/INT007. St Marys. Prominent church spire in Shrewsbury town centre.
Detoured to this returning from Haughmond Hill. Base of column fenced-off. Next to the Shire Hall - very different style.
Steep path up from NW. Block clear of snow. Bolt/Rivet (or could it be a brass rod?) with the faint outline of a cut benchmark. Good views towards Shrewsbury and beyond. Returned to town centre via the disused canal.
All quiet (or so I thought) and the wall just to the left of the main entrance was easier than expected. Trig in good condition with plug intact. The pillar sits in, rather than on, a large plinth; the upper surface of the plinth is nearly level with the lower edge of the bracket. Climbing back out over the wall I got a telling-off from the occupier of the adjacent house - apparently the reservoir keeper. Future visitors might want to call there and ask permission.
St Matthews
Approached across a deserted golf course. The house must be a noisy place to live, albeit with good views on a better day.
Looks like disguised comms masts on top of the church tower. Detoured to the nearby Tropical Gardens - a humid contrast to Roundhay Park.
Tank on stilts - not the most elegant of water towers. Previously visited several years ago to photograph Leeds landmarks - doesn't appear to have changed very much.
Modern school buildings surrounded by a security fence to stop the kids from escaping.
Revisit. No traffic on lane so enjoyable snowy solitude despite being on the edge of the city.

Revisit. Outbound carriageway very busy but traffic moving slowly enough to allow a crossing.
A bit too late in the day to be wandering around here with the light fading. The concrete block was easy to find though. Camera flash not working so no photo.
Nice twilight view over Leeds but immediate surroundings not so good.

St Thomas. Stump of vane seen.
No sign of any structure or block, apart from a discarded brick in the hedge. SE38/T102, National Archive document reference number OS 69/8681 dated 30-9-86 describes the mark as a Brass rivet on "concrete base of old building - now cracked" with 4 witness marks all within 1.5 metres. This would appear to have been a replacement for an asphalt disc on the building roof, placed in 1954. A sketch shows that the building was located on the W side of the hedge. The document also gives the bearings to other local marks: Nidd Moor, Bilton Ch Twr, Coporation Farm, Queen Ethelburgh's Sch Twr, Mount Pleasant and Killinghall Chapel Vane.
St Johns. Mast but no flagstaff.
Revisit. Unusual FB colour. Pillar on N side of hedgeline. Plug replaced by plastic cover. Footpath from E not much in evidence. Continued on to Thorner to identify the ford on the cover of my somewhat battered copy of OS Explorer 289.
Building visible across carpark from the main entrance. Didn't attempt closer access. The brass mark has a computation date of 1987 but the present building seemed that it might have been constructed more recently than that. So I emailed the British Library and they kindly replied to say that the building was completed in 1961. Possibly its been reclad since then.
St James parish church. Flagstaff with flag on a cold and windy morning. The OS trig marks database lists the flagstaff as (440378.094,448377.375) and the Brass Centre Mark as (440381.406,448378.406) which puts the centre mark at 3.3m E and 1m N from the flagstaff. But the latter is within 1m of the NE corner of the tower. So either the brass mark is not on the tower but further to NE on a sloping roof or else maybe the flagstaff has been repositioned from the W side of the tower (or else my sums are wrong). Width of tower 1m from ground measured as approx 4.7m.

St Thomas'. OS trig marks database states 'Flagstaff destroyed 08/85'
The OS trig marks database records this as 'Spire Dest 08/78' with the grid reference pointing to what is now a row of modern houses. Similarly, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holywell_Green mentions a church demolished in the 1970s. Next door is the current church which has a belfry but no spire.
S side of busy road; raining heavily.
Flagstaff complete with flag. Wet and windy morning.

NW Sheffield. Churchyard a bit dark.
Revisit. Plastic plug cover and the expected graffiti. Presumably the OS chose this location for views to S - before the trees grew up.
The OS trig marks database records a 4th-order block SK39/T158 "Dest 8/78" at (431380.938,396363.938) corresponding to the more southerly of the two tops on Wharncliffe Chase. Access from SE via a recently-constructed roadside gate. The location matches some gritstone outcrops. As expected, nothing found but worth a visit for the view.
Church. Nearby mill chimney would have made an interesting trig mark.
Refurbishment ongoing. Sign says 'Business as usual'. FB still intact.
Church spire at dusk. Harrogate town centre full of grim-looking Christmas shoppers.
Now apartmentalised as St Luke's Court. The pinnacle makes the tower look lopsided.
2nd order rivet in a secure reservoir compound at W end of the village. I think this one might be missing. Reasoning as follows: The OS trig marks database records the position as (432066.781,463788.656) with a height of 328.700 ft. The position is towards the E corner of the compound, well away from the raised area which occupies the W half. The ground level for the location is not much different from the road. The OS map, displayed via Geograph, shows a spot height of 96m at the high point of the road, just NW of the reservoir and also a 95m contour through the compound itself. The latter corresponds to 311.7 ft; i.e 17 ft lower that the height of the mark. So unless there is an error in the OS trig marks database (unlikely) the mark was well above ground level on a structure that no longer exists.
Revisit. Plug intact. Plaque a bit skew. Well looked-after.

Some greenery at the edge of the site but would have been added after the showroom and roundabout construction.
Hard to find anything of interest here.
S corner of the compound is easier than the roadside wall. Empty reservoir was bigger than expected. Fallen parapet stones include two witness marks as per CJO's report. I wonder if the top of the tower has been removed.
Theres a right of way in the form of a muddy path on the S side of the site, just outside the security fence. It would be possible to get closer to the building but it wouldn't give a better view of the roof, so I think the status of the bolt is indeterminate. Curious signage. Of greater interest was the full-scale train sculpture to the East.
St Andrews. Flagstaff with a flag.
Included in the OS trig marks database as SD96/T065 (4th order bolt). Small bolt found on whitewashed gritstone outcrop, W side of wall at wall junction. A small marker with a big view across the Aire valley. Access from road via a muddy path alongside the wall.
Several 2GL wall brackets around Melsonby.
As CJO says, the OS trig marks database records this as destroyed. So presumably the current flagstaff, at the NW corner of the church tower, is a replacement that hasn't been computed as a trig. It looks slightly truncated. Quiet village.

Site viewed in morning from train between Darlington and Heighington - no buildings visible. Returned early afternoon on foot; couldn't see from road to W across yards and hedgerow but satellite photo confirms that theres nothing there.

OS trig marks database states "Dest 01/86". Grid ref is slightly to S of the modern replacement.
Nice view of Ingleborough
Outside Heysham dock. Good views across Morecambe Bay. The structure on top of the nearer tower looked somewhat trig-shaped.

St Peters
Cold morning in Lancaster
Approached via the Trans Pennine Trail along the riverside; path goes along the shore then over dock buildings - unusual. No sign of clock tower.
Windmill gone. Probably a nice view - if it wasn't for the houses in between.
St Mary's church. The gravestone inscription was interesting!
Grid ref seems to correspond to Clowes Court off South Lane; modern houses, couldn't see a church building. Looked for survey markers by the Humber bridge; found NRA and EABM but nothing OS-like.

Marked with a trig symbol on OS Explorer 293. Active Station is still there but the bolt is indeterminate. Mist slowly clearing.

Would speculate that the disc might have been used as a marker for aerial surveys. No way of checking to see if it still exists.

Howden Minster
All Saints. Flush Bracket on the church is currently fenced off but doesn't appear to be at risk from the maintenance work.
An information point across the road describes the history of the site and mentions that the chimney was taken down in 2003.
Flag pole and brackets attached, slightly obscuring the flush bracket. Friendly farmers - happy to allow a visit; they wanted to know why all the sudden interest in their trig pillar and seemed to think it was an odd pastime. They said that the pillar had been moved a yard or two from its original location. Good views towards the edge of the North York Moors.
Flush Bracket on PH across the road. I wonder where the village got its name from.
Converted to offices 'Hale Court'. The OS trig marks database states 'Destroyed 07/93'. Grid ref points to the building on the E side where the roof seems newer than the rest of the building.
Daniel Hill Mews. School gone.
Gone. The OS trig marks database states 'Dest 7/82'. The site is on the E side of Tinsley viaduct, N side of roundabout, at the end of a row of neglected shops.
Windy and wet; not a day for looking around Richmond unfortunately.
Plug intact. Red flags on the range perimeter down; all quiet. Low cloud - no view. Extremely wet and windy day when no sensible person would want to visit :()

No remains of any colliery buildings. Site surrounded by anonymous industrial units.
Plaque states that chapels destroyed 1991-92. Good views to West.
Revisit. Tarmac plug; plaque; pillar top slightly rounded. Drizzly afternoon so views a bit disappointing.
The OS trig marks database records this as 'Pole in cairn. Dest 03/65'. Large cairn still there a few metres NE from the trig pillar but, as expected, no pole - just some plastic leaves stuck in the top.
Revisit. Tarmac plug. Mac Hawk's paint job is still evident but starting to flake a little. At least theres no graffiti and not much litter at present. As regards the choice of location, theres a sightline to Beamsley Beacon in one direction and across Ilkley in another, so maybe this plus ease of access was a factor. Rain approaching.
Block easily found from CJO's description. A benchmark as well as a trig mark: 'NZ 2631 4084 CUT MARK ELVETMOOR TRIG BLOCK 99.8738'
Just the mini-cupola at the wrong location.
Path via fence from Obelisk Lane. Lat/Lon/Height inscribed on base but lettering is worn and not easy to read. Monument not very visible - a pity that it is neglected.
Large bolt in middle of gritstone outcrop roughly mid-way between the cairn and the shooting hut. The bolt has 4 small rivets (witness marks, I assume) surrounding it at a distance of approx 1 metre. Mild day with good views across Coverdale.
Looks as though it was constructed from giant lego bricks. The nearby sculpture by Barbara Hepworth is worth a visit.
Tower ticket from shop inside church. Steep spiral staircase; 200 steps to roof. Aerial views of the town showing the grid layout including Corve St, Bull Ring, Buttercross, Broad Street and the Marketplace. Clee Hill somewhat blurry but Callow Hill monument visible to N. Rain approaching from Woofferton.

Obelisk at hilltop, just inside Worcestershire county boundary. Monument spoiled by graffiti and surrounded by a tall fence. OK views.

The water tower is still there, overlooking a golf course, but the cupola has gone. The OS trig marks database states "Dest 01/82"
The OS trig marks database lists the bolt with a height of 103 metres whilst the Landranger map gives a nearby spot height of 83 metres. So would assume the bolt was placed on the tower roof. Comparison of the coordinates of cupola and bolt indicate that the latter was on the E side. No way of knowing if its still there.

An active colliery so didn't venture too close. Water Tower is towards the NE corner of the site. No way of knowing if the bolt is still there. Access from S along track by side of elec substation, then path to top of Nature Reserve (former spoil heap). Good views of the colliery from the field beyond this.
Now a hotel. Access via Gallery entrance.
College fenced-in; buildings not visible through hedge from road to N. Footpath down E side - cupola easily seen from here.

Revisit. Pillar recently painted. Plug replaced by tarmac otherwise vgc. The Menwith mushrooms on the far side of Wharfedale seem to be increasing in number.

N side of damaged bldg on top of resvr, inside broken fence. Bolt at corner, rather than centre, of the exposed part of concrete block. Easy to find.
Pillar gone. The site is marked 'Obsevatory' on OS Explorer 270; perhaps a copyright trap rather than a typo.
Revisit. Plug has been reinstated. Standard OS lettering whereas Rod Sladen's earlier photo shows no lettering; so I guess its not the original. Intermittent sunshine.

Reservoir surrounded by the usual 6ft high pointy steel fence. A footpath goes around three sides allowing good views of the interior. Satellite photo indicates that the bolt location corresponds to the N edge of the roof of a building on the top of the reservoir towards the E side of the compound. To the N of the building is sloping ground so a roof location rather than at ground level seems likely. Plaque dates building as 1937; roof likely to be the original. Its anybody's guess as to whether the bolt is still there.
Revisit. Plug missing, hooks slightly flattened, otherwise OK. On previous visit the trig was on bare ground. Now, the 4ft-high pillar is surrounded by 5ft-high field beans so despite being on a path, it took a while to find.

No sign of cupola. The different colour of tiles at the roof ridge shows where it once was. The village was badly affected by flooding in June 2007.

The grid ref points to a modern roof whereas the OS trig marks database records that the item was computed in 1953. Couldn't see anything resembling a lamp. Site now a part of Tata Steel but a rooftop fox commemorates the founder. The flagstaff on Stocksbridge clock tower (SK39/INT036) is an intersected point not far away.
Revisit. FB painted, plug intact. Masts, road, steelworks, hills beyond.

The OS trig marks database records this as replaced by a surface block 08/56 which was itself destroyed 07/66. So settled for a circular walk around the range on public rights of way; nearest approach about 600 metres away to W. Nothing seen along roadside. Trig symbol appears on OS 1" Sheet 91 seventh series (1962).
Visible from near the roundabout to NE, from Vimy Rd to S and also at a greater distance from NW.

Location corresponds to W edge of the plantation at about the highest point along the side of the field. Both sides of hedge checked but no sign of reservoir remains. The OS trig marks database records a height of 51.099 metres for the bolt as compared to 48.213 for the nearby trig pillar. No sight line between the two but unlikely to be nearly 3 metres height difference; i.e. the reservoir was above ground and should have been obvious.
Distinctive tower lacks a cross so condition is debatable.
Revisit. Still intact. Empty field but acres of rhubarb nearby.

St Edmunds
Obelisk at W end of the main avenue within Undercliffe Cemetery giving extensive views over Bradford towards the Pennines. Victorian sculpture park - well worth a visit.
Usually referred to as Hartshead Pike. Walking up the road from Mossley, the monument seemed to be leaning slightly. Extensive views over Manchester and Oldham with Winter Hill beyond.
More commonly known as Pots and Pans or Alderman's Hill. Hartshead Pike intersected station visible across valley.
Several previous visits to this odd edifice. It isn't in danger of falling over but was designed to look as though it is. A pity that some visitors need to carve their initials in the stonework. The other monuments in Wentworth Park are worth a visit.
N side of bridge over motorway. Checked pavement and kerb both sides and also the road surface in between - nothing. Concrete parapet of bridge difficult to access so only partially checked. Marker on W kerb doesn't match grid ref and appears to be non-OS; incomplete painted triangle implies past resurfacing.
E side of bridge over motorway, N side of lane. Found three (non-OS) markers on the N side of the bridge itself but too far off grid ref. The kerbstones nearest the bridge seem to be recent, nothing there anyway. Surround of mhc appears to match the position but concrete is new. Seems unlikely to be deliberately buried so suspect missing.
Empty field; able to access former location via tractor line. Good views towards Brown Clee. Some fragments of concrete in the hedgerow next to footpath; superficial similarity to trig but probably not.
SO59/INT002 Most recent of many times that I've passed this somewhat ugly building. St Laurences church in the town centre (SO59/INT001) is far more impressive.
End of short lane leading to Nursery then over the barbed-wire gate (not too difficult to negotiate at LH end). Plug intact. Plywood replaced after photos. Not much view.
Google maps indicates the N side of a building within the reservoir compound. But its now a construction site and the building has gone, so doubtful that the bolt has survived.
Hexagonal view point, a bit neglected, with good views across NW Sheffield. Small rivet on top step, about 2ft from RH end.
Was expecting this to be straightforward but nothing found. Satellite image suggests SW end of bridge above W edge of motorway. Checked concrete parapet, pavement and kerb on both sides; didn't check the road itself but seems unlikely. Two rusted bolts in concrete on NW parapet didn't seem OS-like. Also found a small hole in the expected location on S side. Next visitor might want to check location with GPS. Revisited 5 May 09:15 with GPS; same location, same conclusion.
Reservoir facing a busy road with traffic and dog-walkers passing by. Compound defended by steel pallisade fencing with spiky tops but a tour of the perimeter identified discreet and straightforward access. Satellite image suggested the roof of a brick-built access point, about 8ft high, on the N edge of the reservoir. Difficult to check roof but theres a central mound with what might be a bolt in the middle. But the OS trig marks database records a rivet so not sure if this is it. Checked the surrounding concrete steps and kerb stones but nothing else found. The concentric rings painted on the roof were unusual - no obvious waterworks purpose but visible in satellite image. So possibly an aid to aerial surveying?

Low, cylindrical top, N side of road with very easy access; no fence for a change. Large bolt, approx 2 inch diameter, about 4 ft from edge. Good views across the Dearne valley on a sunny afternoon.
Site between timber depot and airstrip. Open field with concrete debris nearby but nothing found. Sunshine and light drizzle.
Close to field boundary, nothing seen.
Revisit. Detour on the way back from Drumaldrace to Ribblehead. Moat still present. Top damaged but with partial repair.
The bolt is described in the OS trig marks database as 'bolt in rock; mark buried' with the coordinates placing it about 2 metres from the original cairn. The database records both cairn and bolt as computed in 1955; i.e the bolt did not replace the cairn. No rock outcrops at the summit but using a long-bladed screwdriver as a probe, there seems to be a solid platform a few inches below the surface - maybe the foundations of the cairn. Trial digs with a trowel on the Addlebrough side found nothing but a spade would be needed to do a thorough search; perhaps a metal detector as well. So possibly 'possibly missing' - not really sure.
Probably Yorkshire's easiest 2000' top, just a minor detour from the track. The OS trig marks database records the station as 'Dest 07/76' so the present cairn is presumably a rebuild and possibly relocated. Good views across Wensleydale.

Revisited. The new 'Barratt Box' houses are now all built and occupied. Theres a central green space which (like Tingley) would have been suitable for a relocated trig, but no sign of it. The old location now appears to be in the back garden of a house on Roman Road in 'Celtic Village'. No Celts, no Romans and no trig :(

End of year walk over Ilkley Moor
An interesting monument in a quiet corner of Sheffield just a few minutes walk from the railway station; most recently visited at the end of 2011. Significant from a trig point of view for two reasons. Firstly, it is still marked on recent OS maps with a triangulation symbol. Secondly the OS trig marks database flags this as destroyed with the remark 'Destroyed 09/91'. But Wikipedia says "The monument was struck by lightning in 1990 and the top removed for safety, rebuilding began in 2005 thanks to a grant and was completed in 2006"
The grid ref corresponded to a point along a grassy path, just S of a slightly flattened minor hilltop containing a wooden sculpture and picnic table. Unclear if Waleswood colliery workings used to extend this far but the top seemed artificial. Good views W across the Rother valley and S into Derbyshire. Unlike the other Yorkshire fenomarks, this location didn't have an obvious motorway-related purpose although the M1 was just visible to the SE. Did a grid search probing for the block; nothing found but a few stones. Quiet country park on the edge of Sheffield. Good example of an EABM survey mark by the bridge to the visitor centre.
Approached from SE across pasture. Over wooden fence at NW end of field where the line along the back of the houses converges with the boundary fence of Monkmoor sewage works. Then a dead-end track with evergreens screening the works from the surrounding area. The active station can be seen through the branches. Its on the N angle of a single-storey building and appears to be the usual Leica dome on a metal pole. Miserable wet day.
Hadn't planned to visit this trig but realised it wasn't far from Bissell Wood. W edge of property at hill top. Plug intact. FB not accessible. Unexpected view of Clee Hill.
From Deansford Lane, along track towards the stables, but didn't meet anyone to ask permission. The horses didn't like my presence so retreated to woods, up steep bank through brambles then better progress around edge of wood to mast. Horse-less field from there. Trig at summit - good views to SE. Plug intact. Suspicious noises from the paintball zone to N but found an easier retreat.
Revisit. Previously needed a low-profile approach to avoid the motorway construction. Much easier now. Trig slightly damaged but no worse than before. Light fading so back to Pontefract for train home.
Approximately midway between the Fenomark sites for Spitalgap Lane and Kings Standard Hill. Two entries in the OS trig marks database for this one, identical coordinates, both flagged as 'destroyed' and the latter noted 'Destroyed 05/92'. The location corresponds to the NE corner of a footbridge over the M62 and gives good views of the surrounding area.
At the NE end of a group of 3 Fenomarks, this one is to the N of the M62. GPS pointed toward W edge of former quarry track on N side of lane but again within tarmac area. No sign of Fenomark. In the OS trig marks database the original mark is flagged as 'destroyed' (and with an order of 13 which might be a typo). Replacement rivet in database recorded with identical coordinates - would have expected the coords to change a little if it was a new mark. Found an OS-like rivet in a kerb stone, slightly further north. Perhaps this is the mark in question but the position doesn't match. A somewhat flat hill.
There are three Fenomarks recorded in the OS trig marks database for this area, all in Secondary block SE44 with Station numbers T191, T192 and T193. The marks are approximately in a line and equally spaced. The computation and levelling years for the original marks are also identical (1987). So a common purpose, presumably motorway-related, is implied. Spitalgap Lane is at the SW end of the group. There are two entries in the trig marks database with near-identical coordinates; the earlier one is flagged as 'destroyed'. The W end of the lane is blocked to traffic but the area is popular with dog-walkers who were probably bemused by my investigations. Was expecting fly-tipping but the area is reasonably clear. However, vegetation has encroached onto the tarmac. GPS pointed to the centre of the road which seems unlikely; nothing found in the tarmac. Checked both verges but nothing found. The location seemed slighly arbitrary - not particularly near junctions of field boundaries and no obvious alignments with the many pylons, power station chimneys and cooling towers. Flat landscape; cold wind.

Station T190 in Secondary Block SE44. Overlooking a motorway as seems to be the pattern for most of the Fenomarks in Yorkshire. The grid reference for this one corresponds to the E side of a hedge, at a minor summit near the NW corner of a field, giving open views W as well as to the old/new A1M. Kirk Deighton Church spire is also prominent (also in the trig marks database as an intersected point, SE44/INT016). Straightforward access from E via the cycle track along the old A1 then up field edge. Soft ground alongside the hedge with concrete and stone rubble. Spent 15 mins probing and concluded that theres probably nothing on the surface. Suspect that the Fenomark has gone though it could be buried somewhere. The farmer came up to see what I was doing - I apologised for the trespass and explained why I was there; he didn't seem too concerned. He could recall surveyors working at this general location but couldn't remember exactly where or when.

Station T249 in Secondary block SK39. Not far from the M1 but installed long after the motorway was constructed. Situated at the junction of a minor road with lane leading to Rockley Old Hall. The Fenomark could be under the tarmac although the grid ref seems to indicate the NW edge of the lane. Grassy verge slightly below tarmac level, no brambles, thin hedge in front of stone wall, fairly accessible. No sign of the marker on the surface - would have expected a 3" square block. Spent 15 minutes probing the ground with a screwdriver; buried stones, concrete and bricks - no result other than arousing the suspicions of passers-by. Concluded that the Fenomark is probably gone, but by no means certain.

Ring station with central bolt, located on the edge of the Cross Fell plateau, adjacent to the higher of two large cairns on the route of the Pennine Way. Corresponds to OS Station T001 in block NY71 369015.875 534251.438 described as a Buried Block. Grid Ref deliberately entered incorrectly to distinguish this site from the Cross Fell trig point; actual separation is about 290 metres. The block was quite deeply buried under a covering of stones, rubbish and peaty gunk. Lettering on circumference very worn. Views towards Cow Green reservoir and Dun Fell.
Plug intact (surprising, given the location), extensive views but quite windy. From Langwathby station via Kirkland, returning through Blencarn. Tracks alternately dry and boggy as different strata were crossed.

This station appears to be the replacement for NOTT.

This would appear to correspond to an entry in the OS trig marks database "The Wharf. Station number T135 in secondary block SK73. Bolt Dest 4/84. OSGB36 451261.125 331644.563" Location is adjacent to footpath; investigated but nothing found.

Graffiti on waterworks bldgs inside the fence implies that there is a way in, but I didn't bother looking.
This no longer appears on the OS map of active stations and www.bigf.ac.uk/station_logs/Archlogs.xls lists it as dead. From grid ref and aerial map, I estimated that the station would have been at the S end of the 7th out of 8 long, single-storey blds aligned N-S. Tried various vantage points to view this; best seemed to be by standing on top of the solid wooden fence next to the SW corner of the site (passers-by ignored me; evidently photographing government buildings in this way is not considered unusual). Would have expected to see the active station but no sign. So suspect its gone, maybe replaced by the fairly recent station at Keyworth.
Difficult to miss but wouldn't have thought that it would be especially prominent from a distance.

The plug has been stolen since the previous visit just over a year ago. All sighting holes open and upper centre mark visible. Channels cut from spider-ends and hooks to edge of pillar - doesn't look like vandalism but purpose unclear. FB number removed but viewed from a distance, maybe a ghostly S_4_2 can be seen. An oddity.
This is no longer an easy roadside bag. Trig is now on the other side of a new metal fence. Earth moving equipment active on site. Gate was open so sneaked in for a quick visit. Plug intact, good condition - looks like the pillar will survive the developments but may become inaccessible.
This was a strange one! From the footpath, up through open-ish woodland emerging by the masts. There was a rotating gadget next to the trig with two pigeons attached (thankfully not alive!). I then noticed a camouflaged hide with apparently someone asleep inside. Took hasty photos and departed.

Owler Bar is listed as a rivet in the OS Passive Station database with station id C1SK2877. There is no sketch or photo. The coordinates point to a location on the N side of the B6054, a little over 500 metres SE from the Barbrook surface block (C1SK2778). Both locations correspond to a grassy verge between a layby and drystone wall. Spent a while probing the rubbish-strewn site but nothing found and no roadside markers evident. Owler Bar was last visited by the OS in 1997 whilst the record for Barbrook dates from 1999. Given the proximity, it therefore seems possible that the Owler Bar rivet was destroyed with Barbrook replacing it.
Revisit. Block still exposed and easy to find at present.

Walked through the village with all its corners, past the windmill, to the farm entrance. Nothing in the way of significant garden ornaments. Then around the back, via a muddy bridleway and a short detour up to the high point in the field. Nothing there.
The OS passive station database lists an entry for C1SK7657, Little Carlton, at SK767576. There is no sketch or photo and the detailed coordinate values are missing. The location corresponds to a section of the A616 which appears to have been realigned and raised above the base of adjacent hedges. Last visited by OS in 1993. The passive database entry of the rivet at nearby Kelham, C1SK7755, dates from 1999. So this suggests that the Little Carlton rivet was lost to roadworks and replaced by Kelham.

Although the lamp posts have changed, the pipe nail in the top of a wooden fence post still exists to indicate the general area. Also noted a nail set in the edge of the pavement; not shown on the OS sketch but seems likely to have been placed as a marker for the block. Measuring back from the latter, found a large, fairly flat-topped, rock just below the surface. We also measured from the fence and spent some time digging around the probable location. Plenty of small stones so difficult to probe, but no concrete found. Most likely conclusion is that the block has gone. But it occurred to me on the way home that the large flat rock might have been placed as a covering for the block; the next visitor might like to take a spade and verify this :)

Path up from the mining museum has been diverted around the woodland until Autumn whilst tree felling is completed. Half-way up is a peculiar hollow waymarker - presumably meant to be a trail sculpture but it looked more like a discarded bag of cement :) Trig in poor condition with about half the top screed gone; plug missing; numerous small cracks in the pillar surface; plinth crumbling. Graffiti scratched on FB and spider. Lots of cotton grass and cloudberry.

Another visit after reading recent reports. Not sure about this one. I thought about asking the occupants of Tingley Hall bungalow about the fate of the trig at the top of their garden only to find that the bungalow and garage have been demolished and all surface vegetation removed. A fence surrounds the building site with an earth bank on the inside. Noone was about and it would have been easy enough to get onto the site through an obvious gap but I decided not to. Views over the fence obstructed by new houses and building plant/materials which make it difficult to determine reference points to how it used to be, but unless the trig is behind the fence at the top of the site then its gone - at least for now.
Revisit. Still on the roof of the former OS offices, visible from the rear of the garage premises across the road. The original cone has been replaced by a dome. OS have moved to Leigh House, just down the road on Varley St.

Layby on N side of road, opposite the flue arch. At the W end of this is a seat on a concrete plinth, and on the NW corner of the plinth is an OS bolt, covered by moss.

High walls topped with broken glass, inner security fence (electrified I think), spiky-topped gate with barbed-wire surround and now CCTV. United Utilities certainly keep their water supplies safe! The hole where the trig used to be is obvious enough but despite a good look around could find no sign of any remains. The land is still for sale but no sign of any developments. Impressive landscape in its own way.

As expected, no pillar, but found the surface block which replaced it. OS benchmark database records this as TF05/T022 and notes "pillar replaced by block 3/65". This is located on the S verge of the farm track, approx 12 ft NW from a leaning electricity pole. 2" dia hemispherical bolt, i.e. different shape from an upper centre mark so this is a replacement rather than the remains of the original pillar.

The Curry Stool was clear of vegetation; bolt on central raised area. The Andy Goldsworthy sculptures in the sheepfold next to Deadman Gill bridge were more interesting.
Approached from N along green lane to where the right of way turns W then followed NE side of hedge. From where the hedge meets the N edge of the woodland, the trig is just a short way in. Noisy off-roaders event taking place on the airfield so kept away from the perimeter track, but the wood was quiet. Base of trig covered in moss, FB modified as noted by trigbagger. Plug with three centre holes, no lettering. No view; grey overcast morning.

Measured from base of signpost towards woodland as per Brisey's directions. Found after about 10 minutes under a shallow mat of grass - relatively easy for a surface block.
Tide out - walked along beach from Withernsea. No remains found. Two previous visits - 5 July 1996 when the trig was approx 3ft from the edge and similar 28 Jun 1997.
Its not everyone who has one of these in their front garden.

A buried trig - unusual! Thanks Brisey - would never have suspected this one. Plug intact and top surface OK; rest of pillar presumed to be in good condition. Industrial views of Salt End across the Estuary and the flare stacks around Killingholme. An interesting walk from the bridge; hundreds of butterflies - mostly large/small and green-veined whites and painted ladies also peacocks, small tortoiseshells, common blue and meadow browns. Lots of ladybirds also. Several NRA survey bolts in the embankment.
Curry Stool - arms are 4' long, slightly tapered and approx 1' wide. Conical bolt 3" dia on slightly raised central section. Slightly S from what seems to be the highest point; good view point. Approached from High Force via fence to Hagworm Hill then over to Bink Moss. Boggy in places but not too bad.
Plug intact - the fixing screws look recent. Traces of paint remaining on pillar. Paths a bit overgrown.
Pasture with cattle reluctant to move. Plug intact, FB polished. Cloudy and humid. Often see this one from the train, so good to visit.

Thanks to Andy Bown for making the arrangements with Robinsons Brewery for this visit. We met up at the entrance to the packaging centre on Bredbury Park Way; signed in, were given id badges and high-vis jackets and then escorted to the pillar by a young lady who probably learned far more about trigs than she might reasonably have wanted to know 8-) Still, trig geeks must make a change of sorts from beer bores. Trig in the NE corner of the site on some waste ground; plug replaced otherwise vgc; FB facing away from the security fence. Surprised to see about 15 orchids growing next to the pillar - identified by Rob Woodall as Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) - thanks!. Subject to prior arrangement (phone or email the head office in Stockport) Robinsons seem quite happy to allow further visits. Friday afternoon seems to be a good time as we happened to arrive just as the shift was finishing for the day.

Plug missing, top slightly damaged, one sighting hole open, base exposed. Warm, hazy day; Tan Hill Inn seen in the distance and Bowes Castle to E but view dominated by the A66 'motorway'. Approached from Pennine Way then hard track for most of the remainder. Met GOML on the way back but as far as I know (map out of date) this is an access area.
The pillar is a bit worse for wear; no FB, plug replaced by resin cover, top damaged with two spider-ends exposed and some loose stonework. Revisited whilst looking for the OS Buried Block "Millstone Rigg" at (382448.063,506409.781). The grid ref put this very close to the toposcope. Nothing found although theres a shallow circular depression just to N. The OS records give a last maintenance date of 1983 whereas the topo was constructed 1981 so that doesn't explain its absence. Curious that the block is little more that 300 metres from the pillar, with a clear line of sight to it, and was constructed at much the same time.

OS Active Station MANH, located on the roof of Abraham Moss Leisure Centre/College on Crescent Road. Not visible from the main road but can be seen by following the access road on the SW side of the buildings, next to the tram lines. The station is of the usual 'dome on a pole' variety and is viewable from just outside the entrance to the school and Crumpsall Library. All quiet on a Bank Holiday morning. According to www.bigf.ac.uk, MANH was installed on 20 Jan 2009, replacing MANC at the same location.

Straighforward access. All reservoir trigs should be like this. Plug missing, FB a bit overgrown, nice views to S across the valley.
Sneaked off the track round the edge of the newish plantation. Hopefully the tall elec fence is to deter deer rather than trig baggers (its avoidable anyway). Nothing to see; no trig, not even a hill anymore.
Two visits, nothing found and, on balance, I think it might have gone, possibly to roadworks. The marker nail on fence post at W side of road is still present, likewise the gate (although maybe the gatepost has been replaced). On the E side, theres a nail in the top rail of the fence, most probably not OS; the two E side references on the sketch are heavily overgrown and no longer usable. From the road edge, the ground slopes down to the base of the hedge/fence; estimating that the block would have been about 1 metre out from the hedge then the height difference is much less and extra buried depth shouldn't have been a problem. Ground quite soft; easy to probe down to about 1 ft depth but plenty of small stones giving false positives. The only other point of interest was a 1" diameter bolt, embedded in the tarmac, centre of the N-bound side of road and slightly S of my estimated location for the block. This doesn't appear on the sketch and might not be OS but it does resemble the marker nail for C1NZ5111 (Newby Grange). Probed both sides of the road at this point but nothing. Seems unlikely that this bolt is itself a replacement for the original block. Have contacted the OS for further info but they simply responded that the passive database is a 'frozen' data set and no further info is available.
Circular trigonometrical ground station. Described in the OS database as a buried block at 380204.969 501262.813 Thought initially that it had gone but found in a shallow hole with a covering of vegetation. Either the circumference never had any lettering or else it has worn away. Conical bolt. Located close to a small pile on stones on the path.
Revisited. Noted that the spider is offset. Hazy morning.
Circular trigonometrical ground station recorded in the OS database as a buried block at 376145.719 495746.813. (Same style as Branstree). W side of fence, close to a stile and cairn. Lettering distinct and in good condition. Conical centre bolt. Not quite visible from the path on the other side of the fence but the station was exposed so surprising that it hasn't been noticed before.

Revisited to look for the Fenomark at ~ SE3010504977. The grid ref put this N of the reservoir, close to the intersection of footpath and hedge. Nothing found but nice views anyway.
Secondary block SE22, station number T275. The grid reference puts this on a hedgeline N of the reservoir, close to where a footpath crosses by a stile. The field had been ploughed leaving very little undisturbed ground alongside the hedge. Nothing found next to or under the stile. So the mark has probably gone although the anchoring pin could still be buried. Have seen Fenomarks in Hebden Bridge and Humberside, neither of which are in the trig marks database and therefore presumably not installed by OS.

Station record at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=C2SK4869 This has a date of observation: 14/03/1996 and links to sketch and also to photo at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpics/jpg/C2SK4869.jpg It doesn't seem consistent for the two stations to be in the same place yet for Hillstown to have been photographed after its replacement was installed. Maybe the photos got mixed up?

The farmer was about so I asked permission to visit - readily granted albeit with a puzzled look for making such a strange request. Trig in NE corner of field, plug replaced, views limited today.

I emailed the OS about this one but there was nothing that they could add regarding the type of mark, its exact location or current status. A study of the site via google maps confirms that there is no longer a signal box or similar structure at this location although the narrowness of the embankment here suggests that the Toton East Junction box might have been slightly further north. As regards the possibility of the trig station being a surface mark, google maps shows that the original track crossovers have gone and also that the ballast is clean; so I think that the balance of evidence is such a mark would have been lost when the track was replaced.

Previously visited 2 weeks ago; found broken tiles, potato-sized pebbles and a buried brick so plenty of false-positives whilst probing but no block. Returned today and, after nearly an hour, eventually found it. Deeper than expected. If the passers-by were locals they were doubtless wondering what it all was for. At least it wasn't raining.

Path from W is signposted and carries a diversion notice indicating that it continues E along a farm track. But as mickandshane noted, the gate leading from the track to road is wrapped in barbed-wire.

Last visited by OS on 09/03/1993 with the observation date for the nearby Melbourne Common bolt (C2SK3624) given as 01/05/1998 implying that the earlier station was replaced. I looked around the NW side of the road, near to the farm entrance but,as expected, found nothing.

Houses, but saw a barn owl on the edge of the main road.
The entrance to the course didn't seem inviting so tried the route in from Western Gailes Way. Located path into wood just W of No.96 but the gate in the steel pallisade fencing was locked. Next considered the SW bank of Holderness Drain but it was steep and overgrown. The track shown on older maps has gone. Then a circuit of the golf course perimeter via North's bridge, a housing estate and back to the main road - secure fencing 8-( Finally, asked for permission at the office next to entrance. No problem - should have tried this first. Golfers ignored me and I them. Trig in a damp patch under trees, plug intact, could do with repainting.
No sign of it. Apart from a holly bush, the ground cover was not dense, so would have expected to see the remains, had there been any. Site revisited 27 June 2009 whilst following a disused railway line out of Hull.

Remains of old road on E side of present one; checked for remains along the wall but nothing found.
Sails is the southernmost 2000ft top on Mallerstang. Its slightly lower than neighbouring Little Fell with a reascent that most would consider insufficient to qualify it as a separate top. Its a wet, tussocky hill with few rock outcrops which is maybe why the OS chose a 'ring' trig station for this location. Its easy to find - at the highest point, next to a small cairn. There are good views of the surrounding hills, especially the profile of Wild Boar Fell. The station itself is waterlogged - several minutes spent in bailing had little effect. Theres a central bolt of approx 1" diameter but I couldn't make out any lettering on the concrete circumference. The station is recorded on benchmarks.ordnancesurvey.co.uk as one of several 'buried blocks' in this area so maybe there are more stations of this kind yet to be found. Acknowledgements to Phil Clayton, whose book 'On High Yorkshire Hills' (Dalesman, 1993) confirmed my suspicion that there could be a ring trig here.

Not only is the rivet definitely missing but its former location is presently unreachable. The site is within the exclusion zone for the dismantling of the MS Riverdance which ran aground on 31 Jan 2008. Walking south along the promenade from Fleetwood to Blackpool with trams for company; persistent rain heading the other way 8-()
Didn't see a clock tower when visiting for the ex-rivet although only 53 metres separation. Checked the OS trig marks database which says 'Dest 10/83'

Full Sutton airfield was previously a Thor missile site with two 'Project Emily' trig pillars. Details, courtesy of Rod Sladen, (474218.15, 454124.23, S9874) N and (473980.5, 453740.08, S9876) S. Part of the airfield remains in use by a flying club; other buildings have been converted to a small industrial estate whilst the former trig locations are now farmland. The N trig site is near a field corner, approached from the SW following the hedgeline. The S trig site is near the corner of a track leading to farm buildings. Nothing remaining now; very flat landscape with little scenic value; some random bits of concrete and poppies at the field edge.
Located on a plinth at top end of farmyard; leaning slightly. Plug replaced; paint flaking. Reasonable view to NE across fields. Viewed by permission; friendly dogs.

OS database states that this one was destroyed 06/60; also gives a computation year for nearby Skirlington as 1959 which implies that the two trigs co-existed for a short while with a separation of approx 47m.
Approached along beach from Hornsea then a scramble up the crumbly cliff. Plug replaced. Pillar seems safe for the moment. View of the caravan park.
Site visited along with Catfoss South. No sign of either.
RAF Catfoss became a Thor missile site but has long been adapted to other uses. The northern part of the airfield is currently a storage depot whilst the southern end is the location for several very large farm sheds (chicken-rearing?) but seemingly empty at the moment. The location of the two former MOD 'Project Emily' trig pillars, courtesy of Rod Sladen, were (513604.07,448410.61) N and (513583.47,448013.14) S. The main runway is aligned approx N-S with the pillar sites just off the eastern edge. This can be approached from the S via a small detour off a public bridleway (itself diverted along part of the airfield's perimiter track). But theres nothing of interest in the field where the trigs once were. A few fragments of concrete found but could have been anything.
Plug not checked. Minor scuff marks on pillar. An uncared-for trig in the farmyard, used as a prop for implements and clutter. No worthwhile views.
Plug replaced; back sighting-hole open. Fidgety cattle kept their distance. Convenient gate from roadside to N. A hill relative to its flat surroundings. One of several Barf/Barff hills - a dictionary search suggests that its a variant of 'Barugh' or 'Barrow'.

The OS Passive Station record at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=C1NZ6721 describes this as a surface block at NZ675215. Theres no more precise location, observation date or coordinate check date given and I couldn't find an associated sketch or photo. The location is within a field rather than the more usual roadside habitat of surface blocks. Site viewed from a distance whilst checking Saltburn 2 (C2NZ6721). The latter has an observation date of 1999 and I'd assume it replaced the original Saltburn station.

Noticed that this had recently appeared as a 'user added' record so adding a retrospective log. The site is under the busy A15, close to a footpath sign. FBM presumably lost when the road was raised to cross the railway line by a bridge instead of the level crossing. Not found in OS passive station list; replacement is H1SE9401.
No OS sketch. Took about 45 minutes to find this 8-( Eventually located approx 10ft from the Hawthorn bush.

Checked the hedgerows in case it had been moved, but no sign of it. Good views across the Humber Estuary from the hilltop. Humber bridge built 1973-1981; trig removed Feb 1979 - so it may well have helped in surveying the construction which ultimately led to its demise - theres gratitude!

Station record is at H1SE9132 but this seems to correspond to the sketch at H2SE9031. Using the sketch, I probed along a line offset from the road by 4.50m and at the correct location eventually found a Berntsen hidden under soil, grass, roots and stones. Would guess this replaced the original bolt.

One of a pair constructed on this site for the MOD - Project Emily. Original locations (courtesy of Rod S) SE992573 (E) and SE988570 (W). No sign of the E trig - location is now in a plantation on the northern edge of the former Driffield airfield. The W trig's location would originally have been in a field, just to the W of the airfield. The pillar, complete with foundations, has been moved approx 100m N and dumped on the E side of a hedge, a short distance S of the plantation. Plug missing, minor damage to the top, one sighting hole open (facing hedge). No FB or recess on any of the three accessible faces. Some other odd-shaped bits of concrete nearby but nothing recognisable. Site approached from N via a very wet track and over a heap of rubble which blocks a gap in the hedge. The airfield now appears to be used for various off-road activities. I assume that this is the trig referred to be 'trig-bagger' in an email to the trigonomy list 18 Jan 2007 which mentions "a toppled trig pillar that lays abandoned on a military training area".

Constructed for MOD - Project Emily. Just beyond W edge of the Industrial Estate. Gone. Bits of concrete about but nothing of trig significance. Location is now a big open field. New perimeter fence under construction. Former location of Carnaby South also visited; at side of track, slightly higher location than the other of this pair but similarly no sign of it.

Passive station H2TA2270; photo (but no sketch) in the OS passive station database. Not found on 24 Nov and 9 Dec 2007. The OS photo had a discouraging lack of detail. Location N of two open gateways opposite the allotments entrance. Soft ground but rubble just under the surface so prodding gave false positives. Forgot to check for roadside nails or paint markers. Found on 3rd visit with IRM's help. A bit further from the road edge than where I'd previously looked.
Third time lucky! Previous attempts 24 November and 8 December 2007. Grid ref indicated a triangular region bounded by Carter Lane, Castle Crescent and Bempton Lane. Wooden fence, approx 6ft high, on Carter Lane with houses around the rest of the perimiter with no obvious access to the interior. Glimpse over fence implied a sharp drop - designated on www.old-maps.co.uk as 'old chalk pit'. OS passive station H1TA2270 includes a sketch but no photo. Spot heights on map indicated that the FBM was approx 3m below the surrounding level. Subsequent research, with much help from members of Trigonomy and the OS, established that the site owner was at 8 Carter Lane from whom permission to visit was obtained. Visited on a bright Sunday morning along with IRM, RHW and RH. The FBM was part-buried, usual GPS plaque but no benchmark plate (possibly it was buried and we didn't dig deep enough). No railings; concrete discoloured, but FBM otherwise in good condition. Height tag present but blank. Chalk pit converted to a secluded garden. Rod Sladen has since suggested that the benchmark plate would probably be on the FBM face closest to the height tag - that might be something for the next visitor to check.

Didn't venture into the field but its newly planted and so nothing to obstruct the view. Even if toppled, the trig should have been visible but there was no sign of it, the hump it was relocated to, or the original field edge. I checked from the E end of the farm drive, from the roadside and from the track on the N edge of the present boundary - just a big open field. So it appears to have been either destroyed or moved again at some point since the previous visit 2 years ago 8-( Trig symbol still shown on current OS 1:50000 and 1:25000. Geograph has a photo of the trig dated 4 July 2006 so that narrows down the date somewhat.

OS Active Station HOOB on the E side of Hoober Reservoir. It has the usual waterworks security - steel pallisade fencing. The station is on the roof of a small building and is visible through the fence from the road junction to S. A slightly closer view obtained from the E side. The monuments just up the road (Hoober Stand and 'The Eye of the Needle') are worth a visit.
Revisited. Fence on road and field sides intact but small gap on the NW side next to bush. Bit of a squeeze to get through. Plug intact, all sighting holes open. Paint flaking. Decent views.
Near end of road leading to peatworks. Plug intact, leaning, surface cracks. Approached from Crowle, following in part the route of the former railway. Lack of contours hereabouts - views of Drax, Goole church spire and towards Scunthorpe.
Prominent water tower on a hill top. Site entrance to S but approached from SW via cemetery, thence from NE corner into open fields and then E along field boundary. The tower is surrounded by a low fence, immediately adjacent to and very visible from the back gardens of neighbouring houses. Microwave transmitters on the tower side. The mark type is a bolt but no sketch or photo is available. On Landranger 112, the tower is located on a 20m contour line whilst the station record gives a height of 30.672m so the bolt is probably located on the roof. The absence of Last Visit, Observation and Coordinate check dates imply that the station was never used. The OS Trig Marks database for km square SE7713 lists a bolt with order 2 and the remark 'HELD FIXED NCE ADJ. TWR RESURFACED 29/06/92'. But it isn't clear if the resurfacing meant that the bolt was destroyed. Coords differ from the passive station by approx 0.03m; the difference is consistent with the OS statement "It is expected that agreement between ETRS89/OSTN02 derived coordinates and the original archive coordinates of triangulation stations (down to third order) will be at the 0.10 metre root mean square (r.m.s) level." In terms of position, it is therefore possible that the passive station and trig marks station are the same item. Alternatively, if the resurfacing remark indicates that the original trig mark was lost then the passive station was a replacement. Another possibility is that the Godnow surface block (CESE7511) recorded in the passive station for 1999 at approx 2.4Km from the Water Tower is a replacement. Without access to further information, the current status of this is indeterminate.

Took rather longer than expected to locate this. Verge overgrown, dense hedgerow, wet greenery. Paint marks have faded away. A single nail at the edge of the road is misleading - look for a pair of similar nails about 7 ft further along. The block is then on a line between these and a large fence-post. Shallow covering of soil and grass. Rain slowly clearing with improving views over the Vale of York.

This is an active station as described on gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/active.asp The station is located on the SW side of a minor road between Thorncliffe and Blackshaw Moor. Its in a secure fenced enclosure next to Thorncliffe reservoir and is easily visible from the road. One unusual feature is that, instead of being located on the roof of a building, the device is on the top of a tall metal tripod.

Rod Sladen identified the site of the original (1912) Kirkby Stephen FBM as NY75830626 and described it as "destroyed 1976; replaced by new FBM Kirkby Stephen (1976)". The original location fits much better with the line of wall brackets north from the Moorcock Inn. Site visited and, as expected, nothing found. Presumably lost to road improvements. The rebuilt FBM appears to have used the original plaque.

Revisited whilst looking for remains of Tingley Hall (it had a wall bracket but was demolished in 1967). Trig pillar now much easier to access but that could change if the open ground is built over. See www.leodis.net for some pictures of Tingley's industrial past.
Hole broken through plug replacement. Nice view of Whitby Abbey and the sea.
Plug intact, one sighting-hole open. Views ancient and modern. Thanks to previous loggers for flagging the other 'trig'. Resembling an upturned drainpipe, the station is approx 48" high, 26" top diameter (including pipe thickness of approx 1" each side). There are four vertical cracks extending the full height of the pillar. No sighting/drainage holes so possibly the damage was caused by water seeping into the interior then freezing. Theres a standard OS spider; the plug is 3.5" diameter with a centre-punch mark, no lettering. Suspect the plug isn't meant to be removed and that there is no centre pipe. No evidence that there was ever a flush bracket. The pillar is on a square concrete base and presumably has some connection with the construction of Fylingdales Early Warning station. Sightlines from the nearby trig may have been obscured by the tumulus necessitating the construction of this oddity?

Spent 45 minutes measuring, prodding and digging but without any result. Not sure why this one should be proving difficult; the measurement from the gatepost is straightforward and, apart from the surface vegn, the ground is soft for digging. Buried stones giving false positives. Nothing found other than some buried twine. Passing traffic must have wondered what was of interest. As IRM says, a spade would help if anyone wants to have a go at this one. I emailed the OS about this surface block and they kindly replied as follows: "I have spoken to our Geodetic Team who have informed me that one of our surveyors visited the site in question on 6 April 2006 but could not find the point in question. It states in the file that the surveyor did not wish to destroy the mark as he could see no signs of major ground movement. He believed that with the set of co-ordinates and the GPS kit in 'Setting Out' mode we should be able to find it. As a result the next time we are in the area we will do a search and either destroy or find and re-describe the station." - I find it reassuring the OS can have difficulty in finding their own markers 8-)
Hidden in the woods but not too difficult to find. From the foundations of the former fire tower, a soft track leads to a fallen tree from where the trig is visible. Plug replaced by plastic cover, flaking paint, no view.
