Church spire. Plus a convenient stop for a number 19 bus home.
Whitkirk Church spire
2013-05-19 15:55 - TP11674 (Queensview Flats)
Took photo of tower, puzzled that it had a different name. Then realised that it was the wrong tower, so walked round to the other side of the supermarket to the correct one. Would think theres a good view across the city from the roof but doubt the aerials are the ones used by the OS.
2013-05-19 15:45 - TP11673 (Seacroft Church Spire)
St James. Church OK but not enamoured of Seacroft.
Seacroft Church Spire
2013-05-19 15:15 - TP11672 (Seacroft Hospital Tower (1988))

2013-05-19 15:10 - TP11671 (Seacroft Hospital Tower)
Flagstaff, centre and comms clutter visible. Nice tower but I thought the name was Killingbeck Hospital.
2013-05-19 14:50 - TP11669 (St Wilfrids Church Spire)
Warm afternoon. Preferred the view of this from a distance rather than close-up.
2013-05-19 14:15 - TP11670 (Shaftesbury Cinema)
Junction of Harehills Lane and York Road. Footbridge not quite high enough to see the roof of this slightly neglected building.
Shaftesbury Cinema view from bridge
2013-05-19 14:05 - TP8476 (Shaftesbury Mound)
Easily found on a dandelion and daisy-covered mini-hill. Good views across Leeds and the Aire valley.
2013-05-18 15:00 - TP9999 (Pilot Dome)
Tower but no dome. OS trig marks database states 'Dest 1965'. Satellite view confirms that the tower now has a flat roof.

SE02/INT012 Bacup St Saviour church spire
2013-05-11 13:45 - TP8565 (Woodthorpe)
Exposed and very easy to find on verge between path and road. The mark could be a brass rod rather than a bolt or rivet.

2013-05-06 14:50 - TP11701 (Hedon Church Tower Flagstaff)
TA12/INT008. St Augustine's - visible from a distance in this flat countryside. Flagstaff recorded as 'Dest 04/74' but theres one there today. So unclear if that should count as 'good', 'destroyed' or 'moved'. Visited for the Flush Bracket but noted that its in the OS trig marks database as well.

Located between N and S carriageways of Otley Road; N side of crossing opposite Lawnswood Gardens; SE corner of kerb.

2013-04-02 14:10 - TP8844 (Lickey Obelisk)

The Column site
2013-03-30 12:15 - TP8531 (Haughmond Castle)
Steep path up from NW. Block clear of snow. Bolt/Rivet (or could it be a brass rod?) with the faint outline of a cut benchmark. Good views towards Shrewsbury and beyond. Returned to town centre via the disused canal.
2013-03-29 10:50 - TP6743 (Warley Resr)
All quiet (or so I thought) and the wall just to the left of the main entrance was easier than expected. Trig in good condition with plug intact. The pillar sits in, rather than on, a large plinth; the upper surface of the plinth is nearly level with the lower edge of the bracket. Climbing back out over the wall I got a telling-off from the occupier of the adjacent house - apparently the reservoir keeper. Future visitors might want to call there and ask permission.

2013-03-23 12:35 - TP11175 (Val D'Or)

2013-03-23 10:00 - TP11173 (Moortown Reservoir Water Tower Mast)

St Thomas. Stump of vane seen.
2013-02-09 09:20 - TP11012 (Warren Top)
No sign of any structure or block, apart from a discarded brick in the hedge. SE38/T102, National Archive document reference number OS 69/8681 dated 30-9-86 describes the mark as a Brass rivet on "concrete base of old building - now cracked" with 4 witness marks all within 1.5 metres. This would appear to have been a replacement for an asphalt disc on the building roof, placed in 1954. A sketch shows that the building was located on the W side of the hedge. The document also gives the bearings to other local marks: Nidd Moor, Bilton Ch Twr, Coporation Farm, Queen Ethelburgh's Sch Twr, Mount Pleasant and Killinghall Chapel Vane.

2013-02-02 12:15 - TP6449 (Thorner Moor)
Revisit. Unusual FB colour. Pillar on N side of hedgeline. Plug replaced by plastic cover. Footpath from E not much in evidence. Continued on to Thorner to identify the ford on the cover of my somewhat battered copy of OS Explorer 289.
2013-02-02 09:20 - TP10019 (British Library Brass Centre Mark)
Building visible across carpark from the main entrance. Didn't attempt closer access. The brass mark has a computation date of 1987 but the present building seemed that it might have been constructed more recently than that. So I emailed the British Library and they kindly replied to say that the building was completed in 1961. Possibly its been reclad since then.
2013-02-02 08:20 - TP10929 (Wetherby Church Tower Flagstaff)
St James parish church. Flagstaff with flag on a cold and windy morning. The OS trig marks database lists the flagstaff as (440378.094,448377.375) and the Brass Centre Mark as (440381.406,448378.406) which puts the centre mark at 3.3m E and 1m N from the flagstaff. But the latter is within 1m of the NE corner of the tower. So either the brass mark is not on the tower but further to NE on a sloping roof or else maybe the flagstaff has been repositioned from the W side of the tower (or else my sums are wrong). Width of tower 1m from ground measured as approx 4.7m.
2013-01-26 15:35 - TP11017 (Harrogate Christ Church Tower Centre)

2012-12-29 12:30 - TP10399 (Holywell Green Church Spire)
The OS trig marks database records this as 'Spire Dest 08/78' with the grid reference pointing to what is now a row of modern houses. Similarly, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holywell_Green mentions a church demolished in the 1970s. Next door is the current church which has a belfry but no spire.

2012-12-15 12:20 - TP3506 (Greno Knoll)

2012-12-15 11:50 - TP10817 (Wharncliffe Chase)
The OS trig marks database records a 4th-order block SK39/T158 "Dest 8/78" at (431380.938,396363.938) corresponding to the more southerly of the two tops on Wharncliffe Chase. Access from SE via a recently-constructed roadside gate. The location matches some gritstone outcrops. As expected, nothing found but worth a visit for the view.

2012-12-08 13:05 - TP9805 (Burton Leonard Resr)
2nd order rivet in a secure reservoir compound at W end of the village. I think this one might be missing. Reasoning as follows: The OS trig marks database records the position as (432066.781,463788.656) with a height of 328.700 ft. The position is towards the E corner of the compound, well away from the raised area which occupies the W half. The ground level for the location is not much different from the road. The OS map, displayed via Geograph, shows a spot height of 96m at the high point of the road, just NW of the reservoir and also a 95m contour through the compound itself. The latter corresponds to 311.7 ft; i.e 17 ft lower that the height of the mark. So unless there is an error in the OS trig marks database (unlikely) the mark was well above ground level on a structure that no longer exists.
2012-12-08 10:05 - TP3425 (Grafton)
Revisit. Plug intact. Plaque a bit skew. Well looked-after.
2012-12-08 10:05 - TP10533 (Grafton Water Tower Centre)
Top festooned with microwave aerials. Revisited the trig pillar and almost forgot this one.

Flagstaff. St Thomas' church; N end of Market Place. Two flush brackets nearby.

2012-12-01 15:00 - TP10775 (Holy Trinity Church Spire Stockton)

2012-12-01 11:45 - TP10610 (Middleton RAF Heating Tower)
Hard to find anything of interest here.
Middleton RAF Heating Tower
2012-12-01 10:10 - TP10611 (Sadberge Reservoir Tower Centre)
S corner of the compound is easier than the roadside wall. Empty reservoir was bigger than expected. Fallen parapet stones include two witness marks as per CJO's report. I wonder if the top of the tower has been removed.
2012-12-01 08:45 - TP10612 (Paton & Baldwins No 2 Power Plant)
Theres a right of way in the form of a muddy path on the S side of the site, just outside the security fence. It would be possible to get closer to the building but it wouldn't give a better view of the roof, so I think the status of the bolt is indeterminate. Curious signage. Of greater interest was the full-scale train sculpture to the East.
2012-11-25 16:00 - TP10760 (Keighley Church Tower Flagstff)
St Andrews. Flagstaff with a flag.
2012-11-25 14:45 - TP10774 (Brunthwaite Crag)
Included in the OS trig marks database as SD96/T065 (4th order bolt). Small bolt found on whitewashed gritstone outcrop, W side of wall at wall junction. A small marker with a big view across the Aire valley. Access from road via a muddy path alongside the wall.
2012-11-24 11:49 - TP10608 (Melsonby Church Tower Vane)
Several 2GL wall brackets around Melsonby.
2012-11-24 09:55 - TP10607 (Manfield Church Tower Flagstaff)
As CJO says, the OS trig marks database records this as destroyed. So presumably the current flagstaff, at the NW corner of the church tower, is a replacement that hasn't been computed as a trig. It looks slightly truncated. Quiet village.
2012-11-17 13:20 - TP5916 (Sharpah)
Back again. Breezy. Extensive views.

Windmill gone. Probably a nice view - if it wasn't for the houses in between.
2012-10-20 12:40 - TP10475 (Barton Church Tower St Marys Centre)
St Mary's church. The gravestone inscription was interesting!
2012-10-20 11:00 - TP10479 (Hessle Methodist Church Tower)
Grid ref seems to correspond to Clowes Court off South Lane; modern houses, couldn't see a church building. Looked for survey markers by the Humber bridge; found NRA and EABM but nothing OS-like.

2012-10-06 12:25 - TP10326 (Brompton Chimney)
An information point across the road describes the history of the site and mentions that the chimney was taken down in 2003.
2012-10-06 10:40 - TP4071 (Hunters Hill Farm)
Flag pole and brackets attached, slightly obscuring the flush bracket. Friendly farmers - happy to allow a visit; they wanted to know why all the sudden interest in their trig pillar and seemed to think it was an odd pastime. They said that the pillar had been moved a yard or two from its original location. Good views towards the edge of the North York Moors.
2012-10-06 08:20 - TP10327 (Ainderby Steeple Church Tower Vane)
Flush Bracket on PH across the road. I wonder where the village got its name from.
2012-09-29 10:35 - TP9953 (Crookes Methodist Church Cupola)
Converted to offices 'Hale Court'. The OS trig marks database states 'Destroyed 07/93'. Grid ref points to the building on the E side where the roof seems newer than the rest of the building.
2012-09-29 10:10 - TP10005 (Upperthorpe School Dome)
Daniel Hill Mews. School gone.
2012-09-29 08:10 - TP9931 (Tinsley Methodist Church Belfry)

Beamsley Beacon trig
2012-09-16 15:10 - TP9976 (Beamsley Beacon Pole)
The OS trig marks database records this as 'Pole in cairn. Dest 03/65'. Large cairn still there a few metres NE from the trig pillar but, as expected, no pole - just some plastic leaves stuck in the top.
Beamsley Beacon Cairn without a pole.
2012-09-16 14:20 - TP4423 (Ling Park)
Revisit. Tarmac plug. Mac Hawk's paint job is still evident but starting to flake a little. At least theres no graffiti and not much litter at present. As regards the choice of location, theres a sightline to Beamsley Beacon in one direction and across Ilkley in another, so maybe this plus ease of access was a factor. Rain approaching.

2012-09-01 13:40 - TP8088 (Scrafton)
Large bolt in middle of gritstone outcrop roughly mid-way between the cairn and the shooting hut. The bolt has 4 small rivets (witness marks, I assume) surrounding it at a distance of approx 1 metre. Mild day with good views across Coverdale.

2012-07-29 15:00 - TP9949 (Park Hill Water Tower Cupola)
The water tower is still there, overlooking a golf course, but the cupola has gone. The OS trig marks database states "Dest 01/82"
Park Hill Water Tower
2012-07-29 15:00 - TP9950 (Park Hill Water Tower)
The OS trig marks database lists the bolt with a height of 103 metres whilst the Landranger map gives a nearby spot height of 83 metres. So would assume the bolt was placed on the tower roof. Comparison of the coordinates of cupola and bolt indicate that the latter was on the E side. No way of knowing if its still there.

2012-07-22 13:20 - TP9928 (Castleford Road School Belfry)
School demolished (replacement is on the other side of Castleford Road). OS trig marks database states "Dest 02/70". Site now occupied by uninteresting modern houses - not worth a photo.

2012-07-21 09:55 - TP4102 (Ingleborough)

Revisit. Still in vgc other than missing height tag. Both plaques facing away from wall.
2012-07-14 14:30 - TP7977 (Thoresby Water Tower)
An active colliery so didn't venture too close. Water Tower is towards the NE corner of the site. No way of knowing if the bolt is still there. Access from S along track by side of elec substation, then path to top of Nature Reserve (former spoil heap). Good views of the colliery from the field beyond this.

2012-06-30 10:15 - TP6274 (Sutton Resr)

2012-06-30 09:35 - TP7316 (Mansfield West Notts College)

2012-06-23 14:10 - TP8110 (Calow Resr)
Reservoir surrounded by the usual 6ft high pointy steel fence. A footpath goes around three sides allowing good views of the interior. Satellite photo indicates that the bolt location corresponds to the N edge of the roof of a building on the top of the reservoir towards the E side of the compound. To the N of the building is sloping ground so a roof location rather than at ground level seems likely. Plaque dates building as 1937; roof likely to be the original. Its anybody's guess as to whether the bolt is still there.
2012-06-23 09:00 - TP1134 (Beighton)
Revisit. Plug missing, hooks slightly flattened, otherwise OK. On previous visit the trig was on bare ground. Now, the 4ft-high pillar is surrounded by 5ft-high field beans so despite being on a path, it took a while to find.
2012-06-23 08:05 - TP9122 (Woodhouse Church Belfry)

2012-06-09 16:20 - TP9380 (Toll Bar School Cupola)
No sign of cupola. The different colour of tiles at the roof ridge shows where it once was. The village was badly affected by flooding in June 2007.

2012-06-05 17:10 - TP9379 (School Cupola Barnsley)
School to the north of Barnsley town centre. Cupola visible from gate
2012-06-05 15:00 - TP9601 (Locke Park Tower Barnsley)
Resembles a lighthouse built by aliens.
2012-06-05 10:45 - TP9504 (Foxs Filtration Plant Lamp)
The grid ref points to a modern roof whereas the OS trig marks database records that the item was computed in 1953. Couldn't see anything resembling a lamp. Site now a part of Tata Steel but a rooftop fox commemorates the founder. The flagstaff on Stocksbridge clock tower (SK39/INT036) is an intersected point not far away.
Foxs Filtration Plant Lamp - probable location
2012-06-05 10:30 - TP3921 (Hill Top Farm)
Revisit. FB painted, plug intact. Masts, road, steelworks, hills beyond.
2012-06-02 16:40 - TP9243 (Co-op Stores Dome West Hartlepool)

Eppleton Church site
2012-06-02 10:30 - TP8205 (Kinley Hill Bunker)
Location corresponds to ROC post on hilltop; next to footpath so easy access. Hatch surround is damaged and cover missing. Concrete at base also damaged. Spent 15 mins searching the exposed concrete - nothing found but site is overgrown so the rivet might be buried somewhere. Grey sky with light drizzle. Restored tower to S. Interesting description of the site at http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/showthread.php?t=19500
2012-06-02 08:25 - TP9365 (Savings Bank Cupola Thornaby)
Cupola/Clock tower; unclear if building is occupied. Quick visit whilst waiting for train connection.
2012-05-27 14:45 - TP9594 (Sykes Clock Tower Huddersfield)
Clock tower with a pointed hat.
2012-05-26 13:05 - TP3950 (Hipswell)
The OS trig marks database records this as replaced by a surface block 08/56 which was itself destroyed 07/66. So settled for a circular walk around the range on public rights of way; nearest approach about 600 metres away to W. Nothing seen along roadside. Trig symbol appears on OS 1" Sheet 91 seventh series (1962).
2012-05-26 10:40 - TP9372 (Baghdad Lines Cupola)
Visible from near the roundabout to NE, from Vimy Rd to S and also at a greater distance from NW.

2012-05-20 13:30 - TP9377 (St Johns Church Cupola Wakefield)
2012-05-20 13:10 - TP9378 (County Buildings Cupola Wakefield)
Wakefield town centre has very mixed architecture - not always successful.
2012-05-19 16:25 - TP9369 (Carnegie Library Cupola)
Library converted to offices; nice building. Approached via canal towpath and disused railway line.
2012-05-19 14:35 - TP9033 (Platt Bridge Church Tower Pinnacle)

Elaborate building. York overrun with tourists.
2012-05-12 12:40 - TP9314 (Healaugh Church Tower Cross)
Cross at apex of tower. Quiet village.
2012-05-12 10:40 - TP4523 (Long Marston)
Revisited whilst looking for the nearby bolt; trig well hidden.
2012-05-12 10:30 - TP8091 (Long Marston Resr)
Location corresponds to W edge of the plantation at about the highest point along the side of the field. Both sides of hedge checked but no sign of reservoir remains. The OS trig marks database records a height of 51.099 metres for the bolt as compared to 48.213 for the nearby trig pillar. No sight line between the two but unlikely to be nearly 3 metres height difference; i.e. the reservoir was above ground and should have been obvious.
2012-05-07 14:55 - TP9313 (Holycross Church Tower Cross)
Distinctive tower lacks a cross so condition is debatable.
Holycross Church tower
2012-05-07 14:30 - TP6462 (Thorpe)
Revisit. Still intact. Empty field but acres of rhubarb nearby.
2012-05-07 13:20 - TP9116 (Outwood Belfry)
Church Belfry. The school across the road in an interesting building but doesn't appear in the OS list.
2012-05-05 16:55 - TP9319 (Banner Cross Hall Cross)
Viewed from over wall. Cross on tower, next to flag pole.
2012-05-05 16:25 - TP8546 (Greystones)
Approx 3ft from RHS of grit bin and approx 2.5ft in from the kerb, buried but easy to uncover. Concrete block; stem of bolt but no head so will assume its damaged.

School behind security fence but dome easily visible from the footpath.
2012-04-29 15:30 - TP9115 (St Hildas Church Belfry Leeds)
Old map, new roads. Raining steadily. Spotted church with belfry - gate locked. Climbed fence (forgive us our trespasses :) Took photos; checked name board on the way out - wrong church :( Found the correct one next to a railway bridge. Still raining.
2012-04-28 14:15 - TP9114 (Higher Blackley Belfry)
Belfry; church hidden away between houses.
2012-04-28 10:40 - TP9037 (Moorside Church Tower Pinnacle)
Pinnacle on St Thomas' church. Good views to W.
2012-04-28 09:40 - TP8432 (Burnedge)
Straightforward to find. On footpath, not far from road, alongside the highest point of the fence. Bolt in centre of 18" moss-covered concrete block. Cold and windy morning.
2012-04-28 08:20 - TP9036 (Falinge Church Tower Pinnacle)
2012-04-22 14:30 - TP8453 (The Obelisk)
Obelisk at W end of the main avenue within Undercliffe Cemetery giving extensive views over Bradford towards the Pennines. Victorian sculpture park - well worth a visit.
2012-04-21 12:15 - TP8954 (Broad Carr Monument)
Usually referred to as Hartshead Pike. Walking up the road from Mossley, the monument seemed to be leaning slightly. Extensive views over Manchester and Oldham with Winter Hill beyond.
2012-04-21 09:50 - TP8955 (Dick Hill Monument)
More commonly known as Pots and Pans or Alderman's Hill. Hartshead Pike intersected station visible across valley.
2012-04-14 17:50 - TP8968 (Hoober Stand Monument)
Several previous visits to this odd edifice. It isn't in danger of falling over but was designed to look as though it is. A pity that some visitors need to carve their initials in the stonework. The other monuments in Wentworth Park are worth a visit.
2012-04-14 12:30 - TP8194 (Upper Whiston)
N side of bridge over motorway. Checked pavement and kerb both sides and also the road surface in between - nothing. Concrete parapet of bridge difficult to access so only partially checked. Marker on W kerb doesn't match grid ref and appears to be non-OS; incomplete painted triangle implies past resurfacing.
2012-04-14 10:30 - TP8193 (Sandy Lane)
E side of bridge over motorway, N side of lane. Found three (non-OS) markers on the N side of the bridge itself but too far off grid ref. The kerbstones nearest the bridge seem to be recent, nothing there anyway. Surround of mhc appears to match the position but concrete is new. Seems unlikely to be deliberately buried so suspect missing.
2012-04-10 12:20 - TP5141 (Nordley)
Empty field; able to access former location via tractor line. Good views towards Brown Clee. Some fragments of concrete in the hedgerow next to footpath; superficial similarity to trig but probably not.
2012-04-05 16:00 - TP9261 (RC Church Dome Ludlow)
SO59/INT002 Most recent of many times that I've passed this somewhat ugly building. St Laurences church in the town centre (SO59/INT001) is far more impressive.
2012-04-05 11:50 - TP1397 (Bishops Wood)
End of short lane leading to Nursery then over the barbed-wire gate (not too difficult to negotiate at LH end). Plug intact. Plywood replaced after photos. Not much view.
2012-03-31 12:30 - TP8109 (Stannington Tank)
Google maps indicates the N side of a building within the reservoir compound. But its now a construction site and the building has gone, so doubtful that the bolt has survived.
2012-03-31 10:05 - TP8196 (Parkwood)
Hexagonal view point, a bit neglected, with good views across NW Sheffield. Small rivet on top step, about 2ft from RH end.
2012-03-25 15:35 - TP8195 (Hood Hill Bridge)
Was expecting this to be straightforward but nothing found. Satellite image suggests SW end of bridge above W edge of motorway. Checked concrete parapet, pavement and kerb on both sides; didn't check the road itself but seems unlikely. Two rusted bolts in concrete on NW parapet didn't seem OS-like. Also found a small hole in the expected location on S side. Next visitor might want to check location with GPS. Revisited 5 May 09:15 with GPS; same location, same conclusion.
2012-03-25 14:00 - TP8198 (Roebuck Hill Resr)
Reservoir facing a busy road with traffic and dog-walkers passing by. Compound defended by steel pallisade fencing with spiky tops but a tour of the perimeter identified discreet and straightforward access. Satellite image suggested the roof of a brick-built access point, about 8ft high, on the N edge of the reservoir. Difficult to check roof but theres a central mound with what might be a bolt in the middle. But the OS trig marks database records a rivet so not sure if this is it. Checked the surrounding concrete steps and kerb stones but nothing else found. The concentric rings painted on the roof were unusual - no obvious waterworks purpose but visible in satellite image. So possibly an aid to aerial surveying?
2012-03-24 14:40 - TP8027 (Cracoe War Memorial)
2012-03-24 13:30 - TP6463 (Thorpe Fell)
Revisit. Spider surviving. Plug replaced by cover. Warm and hazy.
2012-03-18 14:20 - TP8090 (Adwick Resr)
Low, cylindrical top, N side of road with very easy access; no fence for a change. Large bolt, approx 2 inch diameter, about 4 ft from edge. Good views across the Dearne valley on a sunny afternoon.
2012-03-17 11:05 - TP7545 (Breighton South)
Site between timber depot and airstrip. Open field with concrete debris nearby but nothing found. Sunshine and light drizzle.
2012-03-17 10:20 - TP7844 (Breighton North)
Close to field boundary, nothing seen.
2012-03-10 14:10 - TP2795 (Dodd Fell)
Revisit. Detour on the way back from Drumaldrace to Ribblehead. Moat still present. Top damaged but with partial repair.
2012-03-10 11:50 - TP8082 (Drumaldrace)
The bolt is described in the OS trig marks database as 'bolt in rock; mark buried' with the coordinates placing it about 2 metres from the original cairn. The database records both cairn and bolt as computed in 1955; i.e the bolt did not replace the cairn. No rock outcrops at the summit but using a long-bladed screwdriver as a probe, there seems to be a solid platform a few inches below the surface - maybe the foundations of the cairn. Trial digs with a trowel on the Addlebrough side found nothing but a spade would be needed to do a thorough search; perhaps a metal detector as well. So possibly 'possibly missing' - not really sure.
2012-03-10 11:30 - TP7929 (Drumaldrace Cairn)
Probably Yorkshire's easiest 2000' top, just a minor detour from the track. The OS trig marks database records the station as 'Dest 07/76' so the present cairn is presumably a rebuild and possibly relocated. Good views across Wensleydale.
2012-03-03 14:30 - TP0366 (Normanby Le Wold)
Still quite easy to find under a shallow mat of grass. Paced distance from gatepost with benchmark.
Normanby Le Wold detail
2012-03-03 14:10 - TP0753 (Acre)
Plug replaced by tarmac; passive station plaque. Pillar on N side of hedge; approached through open gate from the mini-menwith dome via field edge. Better views further S from the Viking Way.
2012-03-03 12:45 - TP5601 (Rectory Farm)
Another hedge trig; N side of road. Plug intact.
2012-03-03 11:10 - TP6703 (Walesby Top)
S side of hedge; plug intact. Drizzly and overcast.
2012-02-26 15:10 - TP8029 (Oaks Memorial Barnsley)
Intersected point; roadside monument to mine explosion. View reduced by trees.
2012-02-25 15:40 - TP7949 (North Anston Water Tower)
No Water Tower- site replaced by modern housing on Woodsetts Road. The OS trig marks database records this one as 'Dest 9/86'.
2012-02-25 14:10 - TP3333 (Gateford Farm)
Revisited. The new 'Barratt Box' houses are now all built and occupied. Theres a central green space which (like Tingley) would have been suitable for a relocated trig, but no sign of it. The old location now appears to be in the back garden of a house on Roman Road in 'Celtic Village'. No Celts, no Romans and no trig :(
Gateford Farm Approximate location
2012-02-25 13:30 - TP7948 (Worksop Water Tower)
The OS trig marks database records this as 'Dest 8/70'. Site viewed through fence from S, NE and N sides. Covered reservoir - no sign of a water tower.
2012-02-25 10:45 - TP5101 (New Ville)
Revisit. Trig and plinth uprooted, spider missing but the FB is still there. Woodland adding a little interest to a very flat landscape. Thanks to previous visitors for finding this one.
2012-02-18 13:20 - TP7852 (Ludford Magna North)
Site approx 100 ft into field; nothing there. A few lumps of concrete along the road edge but nothing identifiable as trig remains. Mini-pillar at farm entrace on the other side of the road not trig-related but an odd coincidence.
2012-02-18 13:10 - TP7544 (Ludford Magna South)
Location close to roadside gate. Hedge checked; found nothing but a dead fox.
Ludford Magna South site
2012-02-18 12:05 - TP6104 (Spring Banks)
Plug intact. Last two digits of the FB could almost be '7'. Pillar on N side of gappy hedge; has done well to avoid the hedge trimmer. Short detour from the Viking Way. Rain arriving...
2012-02-18 10:35 - TP3590 (Hamilton Hill)
Plug replaced by cover; top of pillar slightly damaged. A small piece of the '6' in the FB seems to be missing - casting error? Trig is just outside wood, next to fence. Waiting for rain.
2012-02-11 14:00 - TP3101 (Faldingworth)
Another hedge trig; plug not checked. Ghost trees in freezing fog
2012-02-11 12:10 - TP6934 (Wickenby Bridge)
Plug intact. Hedge trig mostly clear of ground cover at present.
2012-02-04 14:00 - TP0860 (Apley)
Big empty field; nothing seen in roadside hedge. OS trigmarks database notes "des 02/85". Sharp wind.
2012-02-04 12:45 - TP6704 (Walk Farm)
Hedge trig; plug intact. Approached along field edge from SW.
2012-02-04 11:10 - TP3181 (Fiskerton)
Edge of field, E side of track; gap in hedge. Ground frozen.
2012-01-28 14:00 - TP4153 (Kelky Fell)
Plug replaced by cover, 1 sighting hole open; initals cut into spider but otherwise good condition. Good views across northern end of the Pennines. Boggy descent to road.
2012-01-28 11:55 - TP2687 (Cumrew Fell)
Plug missing; graffiti on pillar. S side of wall by gate. Track from S not obvious initially. Walker Dan - if that was you that I encountered whilst looking for the track, sorry for not stopping to say hello; I was the one who didn't have the sense to retreat and find the track by the Shooting Box and went floundering through the snowy heather instead :)
2012-01-21 12:05 - TP7825 (Sykes Monument)
Ornamental trig station, built 1865. Grey windy day with a dull drizzly view :(
2012-01-14 14:25 - TP4219 (King Harrys Common)
Plug intact, minor damage to top screed. NW edge of field. Winter sunshine.
2012-01-14 11:55 - TP1504 (Blotting Raise)
Tarmac plug, two sighting holes open. Easy access via track. Sharp morning.
2012-01-07 13:30 - TP7827 (Olivers Mount Monument)
Monument with far-reaching views.
2012-01-07 09:50 - TP5781 (Rye)
Revisit after Wilf's report. Permission given to visit. Through gateway at corner of farm track. Pillar is upright just outside N edge of wood. Plug, FB and foundations all intact. Bright and breezy morning.
2011-12-31 12:35 - TP0152 (Whetstone)
End of year walk over Ilkley Moor
2011-12-30 13:00 - TP8967 (Cholera Monument)
An interesting monument in a quiet corner of Sheffield just a few minutes walk from the railway station; most recently visited at the end of 2011. Significant from a trig point of view for two reasons. Firstly, it is still marked on recent OS maps with a triangulation symbol. Secondly the OS trig marks database flags this as destroyed with the remark 'Destroyed 09/91'. But Wikipedia says "The monument was struck by lightning in 1990 and the top removed for safety, rebuilding began in 2005 thanks to a grant and was completed in 2006"
2011-12-30 10:00 - TP7794 (Rother Valley)
The grid ref corresponded to a point along a grassy path, just S of a slightly flattened minor hilltop containing a wooden sculpture and picnic table. Unclear if Waleswood colliery workings used to extend this far but the top seemed artificial. Good views W across the Rother valley and S into Derbyshire. Unlike the other Yorkshire fenomarks, this location didn't have an obvious motorway-related purpose although the M1 was just visible to the SE. Did a grid search probing for the block; nothing found but a few stones. Quiet country park on the edge of Sheffield. Good example of an EABM survey mark by the bridge to the visitor centre.
2011-12-23 12:15 - TP7750 (Shrewsbury)
Approached from SE across pasture. Over wooden fence at NW end of field where the line along the back of the houses converges with the boundary fence of Monkmoor sewage works. Then a dead-end track with evergreens screening the works from the surrounding area. The active station can be seen through the branches. Its on the N angle of a single-storey building and appears to be the usual Leica dome on a metal pole. Miserable wet day.
2011-12-22 12:10 - TP4892 (Monks View)
Hadn't planned to visit this trig but realised it wasn't far from Bissell Wood. W edge of property at hill top. Plug intact. FB not accessible. Unexpected view of Clee Hill.
Monks View top
2011-12-22 11:25 - TP1400 (Bissell Wood)
From Deansford Lane, along track towards the stables, but didn't meet anyone to ask permission. The horses didn't like my presence so retreated to woods, up steep bank through brambles then better progress around edge of wood to mast. Horse-less field from there. Trig at summit - good views to SE. Plug intact. Suspicious noises from the paintball zone to N but found an easier retreat.
2011-12-17 15:30 - TP4516 (Long Bull Hill)
Revisit. Previously needed a low-profile approach to avoid the motorway construction. Much easier now. Trig slightly damaged but no worse than before. Light fading so back to Pontefract for train home.
2011-12-17 15:00 - TP7808 (Cattlelaith Lane)
Approximately midway between the Fenomark sites for Spitalgap Lane and Kings Standard Hill. Two entries in the OS trig marks database for this one, identical coordinates, both flagged as 'destroyed' and the latter noted 'Destroyed 05/92'. The location corresponds to the NE corner of a footbridge over the M62 and gives good views of the surrounding area.
Cattlelaith Lane site
2011-12-17 13:00 - TP7807 (Kings Standard Hill (1987))
At the NE end of a group of 3 Fenomarks, this one is to the N of the M62. GPS pointed toward W edge of former quarry track on N side of lane but again within tarmac area. No sign of Fenomark. In the OS trig marks database the original mark is flagged as 'destroyed' (and with an order of 13 which might be a typo). Replacement rivet in database recorded with identical coordinates - would have expected the coords to change a little if it was a new mark. Found an OS-like rivet in a kerb stone, slightly further north. Perhaps this is the mark in question but the position doesn't match. A somewhat flat hill.
2011-12-17 10:40 - TP7793 (Spitalgap Lane)
There are three Fenomarks recorded in the OS trig marks database for this area, all in Secondary block SE44 with Station numbers T191, T192 and T193. The marks are approximately in a line and equally spaced. The computation and levelling years for the original marks are also identical (1987). So a common purpose, presumably motorway-related, is implied. Spitalgap Lane is at the SW end of the group. There are two entries in the trig marks database with near-identical coordinates; the earlier one is flagged as 'destroyed'. The W end of the lane is blocked to traffic but the area is popular with dog-walkers who were probably bemused by my investigations. Was expecting fly-tipping but the area is reasonably clear. However, vegetation has encroached onto the tarmac. GPS pointed to the centre of the road which seems unlikely; nothing found in the tarmac. Checked both verges but nothing found. The location seemed slighly arbitrary - not particularly near junctions of field boundaries and no obvious alignments with the many pylons, power station chimneys and cooling towers. Flat landscape; cold wind.
2011-12-10 12:15 - TP4554 (Low Abbey)
Plug with raised lettering. Three sighting holes open, upper centre mark visible. Metal contraption still in place. Diversion off footpath around the edge of wood and a muddy field.
2011-12-10 09:25 - TP4130 (Jardens)
Plug with raised lettering. Corner of field, approached via gate at roadside. OS don't seem sure of spelling; trig is called Jardens but the farm is Jardines.
2011-12-03 11:00 - TP7789 (Westlea)
An easy Fenomark for a change. On footpath at SE corner of mast compound, just outside fence. Slightly dented but recognisable. Dug out slightly for photos. Not clear if the grooves on the upper surface of the block served a purpose; e.g. for seating a surveying device, or just a moulding mark. View of A19 which is presumably the reason for the survey mark. Sunny morning with cold wind from W.
2011-12-03 09:00 - TP7746 (Stockton)
http://www.bigf.ac.uk/files/station_logs/Archlogs.xls lists it as dead. Site was office block, E side of Bridge Road, N side of Park Terrace.
2011-11-26 13:40 - TP5573 (Rainhill)
BsM style bracket. Base exposed. Plug cover broken through; pillar covered in graffiti, but surviving.
2011-11-26 10:15 - TP0523 (Liverpool)
Granite mini-pillar, height tag missing otherwise vgc. Location a bit similar to Lancaster FBM.
2011-11-19 13:50 - TP0135 (Moss Bridge)
Roadside verge by bridge parapet. Still easy to find. The mark on the tarmac is fading but wall arrow still clear. Not sure if head of the bolt has gone or if was installed with just the stem. Bridge surrounded by flat fields.
2011-11-19 11:30 - TP3415 (Gorse Hill Resr)
Tour of the perimeter fence - nothing found
Gorse Hill Resr site
2011-11-12 14:05 - TP4580 (Luddington Hill)
Plug intact, E side of hedge. Trig in good condition and better than expected views. Straightforward access via path along the edge of the golf course.
2011-11-12 11:35 - TP2757 (Delamere)
Plug missing, loops slightly flattened and an attempt has been made to remove the spider. In compound just off the Sandstone Trail; nice area apart from too many uncontrolled dogs.
2011-11-12 10:50 - TP0183 (Kelsall)
Easily seen beyond crash barrier on SW side of bridge over noisy road. Hazy views to S.
2011-11-05 14:25 - TP1059 (Barrock Fell)
Trig next to mast; tarmac plug. Good views of northern Pennines.
2011-11-05 12:35 - TP1492 (Blaze Fell Quarry)
Tarmac plug. FB with fading yellow paint. Located at edge of quarry. Permissive path from E. Misty.
2011-11-05 10:00 - TP4694 (Maughonby Farm)
Plug intact. Trig not too overgrown at present so easier to see the FB. Approached from path to W along field edge.
2011-10-30 15:20 - TP7792 (Woodlands )
Station T190 in Secondary Block SE44. Overlooking a motorway as seems to be the pattern for most of the Fenomarks in Yorkshire. The grid reference for this one corresponds to the E side of a hedge, at a minor summit near the NW corner of a field, giving open views W as well as to the old/new A1M. Kirk Deighton Church spire is also prominent (also in the trig marks database as an intersected point, SE44/INT016). Straightforward access from E via the cycle track along the old A1 then up field edge. Soft ground alongside the hedge with concrete and stone rubble. Spent 15 mins probing and concluded that theres probably nothing on the surface. Suspect that the Fenomark has gone though it could be buried somewhere. The farmer came up to see what I was doing - I apologised for the trespass and explained why I was there; he didn't seem too concerned. He could recall surveyors working at this general location but couldn't remember exactly where or when.
2011-10-29 14:15 - TP3723 (Helsby Hill)
BsM FB; plug intact; inevitable graffiti. Indifferent paint job; numbers barely legible. Contrast between rural Cheshire and industrial views.
2011-10-29 11:40 - TP0915 (Aston Grange)
Plug intact; FB part-buried in soft soil. Detour off footpath; grey and sunny.
2011-10-23 14:30 - TP7791 (Round Green)
Station T249 in Secondary block SK39. Not far from the M1 but installed long after the motorway was constructed. Situated at the junction of a minor road with lane leading to Rockley Old Hall. The Fenomark could be under the tarmac although the grid ref seems to indicate the NW edge of the lane. Grassy verge slightly below tarmac level, no brambles, thin hedge in front of stone wall, fairly accessible. No sign of the marker on the surface - would have expected a 3" square block. Spent 15 minutes probing the ground with a screwdriver; buried stones, concrete and bricks - no result other than arousing the suspicions of passers-by. Concluded that the Fenomark is probably gone, but by no means certain.
Round Green site
2011-10-22 15:30 - TP1996 (Carr Cross)
Plug intact, BsM style FB. Up edge of stubble field to overgrown area at side of pond. Quiet spot but limited views.
2011-10-22 13:05 - TP1696 (Brow Farm)
Plug intact, BsM style FB. Pillar located behind farm buildings; in good condition.
2011-10-15 14:25 - TP5324 (Pasturehouse Farm)
aka Fiend's Fell. Plug missing. Waymarked track from Hartside via large cairn. Obtrusive transmitter on fellside. I probably mystified the bikers at the cafe by searching for a wall bracket.
2011-10-15 13:10 - TP1407 (Black Fell)
Plug missing, rear sighting hole open. At junction of fences, boggy approach, with strands of rusty, boot-snagging wire embedded in the ground.
2011-10-15 11:45 - TP6344 (Thack Moor)
Plug missing; one and a half sighting holes open. Track up from Renwick. Hazy.
2011-10-15 10:10 - TP5832 (Scales Moor)
Plug intact. From roadside gate, up edge of field. Bright and breezy.
2011-10-08 13:45 - TP3859 (Hill House Farm)
Plug replaced by cover. Unremarkable location - the next field W seemed slightly higher.
2011-10-08 10:00 - TP5066 (Naze Point)
BsM-style FB. Plug replaced by cover, one sighting hole open, paint flaking. Grey drizzly view across confluence of rivers but the hovercraft has gone.
2011-10-01 13:40 - TP6347 (The Alps)
Up from road to N; one well-built wall to cross. One sighting hole open, plug intact; plaque. The yellow FB-painter hasn't got to this one yet. Warm and hazy; tortoiseshells flitting about.
2011-10-01 13:15 - TP0133 (Mansriggs)
Not deeply buried so easy for a change. The OS sketch was useful with the wall junction as reference.
2011-10-01 12:15 - TP7232 (Ulverston)
Granite mini-pillar by roadside. A bit green and damp. Height tag gone otherwise VGC.
2011-10-01 12:10 - TP0597 (Ulverston FBM Aux 1)
Located just outside the bramble patch at present; roughly in line with the first wooden fencepost to LHS of gate.
2011-10-01 10:50 - TP7454 (Barrow Monument)
The trig marks database lists this as SD47/INT002; i.e. its an intersected point. So the trig station is the monument itself. Steep grassy path up; views a bit hazy today.
Hoad Hill monument
2011-10-01 09:41 - TP1387 (Birkrigg Common)
Easy path up through gorse and limestone pavement. Pillar painted glossy white and FB numbers in yellow. Plug intact but a bit battered. Plaque; one sighting hole open. Hazy views across the estuary and pagoda thing. Letterbox at road closed 'for Health and Safety reasons' ??
2011-09-24 12:35 - TP3784 (High Dykes)
N side of fence. Plug missing. Overcast day.
2011-09-24 10:30 - TP5479 (Plumpton Head)
Looked for remains but no concrete found. Destroyed 04/94 according to OS records. Approached from S via track but theres also a permissive path linking to the larger area of access land to the NE.
Plumpton Head site
2011-09-17 13:45 - TP3536 (Gummers How)
Looks more like a cairn than a trig pillar. Access via the stone staircase, in between showers.
2011-09-17 10:55 - TP7815 (Brant Fell)
Rivet in rock outcrop, below the summit. Secondary block SD47/T009 describes it as a bolt but in appearance its close to the rivet at Saskills (SD47/T046). Showery day - not much view.
2011-09-10 15:35 - TP5871 (Sellet Hall)
Plug intact. FB polished by livestock. Wet and muddy field.
2011-09-10 12:55 - TP4090 (Hutton Roof Crag)
Plug missing, FB painted. Rain and wind.
2011-09-10 10:00 - TP2489 (Cragg Lot)
Field corner. Plug intact, 3 sighting holes open. Tops of surrounding hills in cloud. Humid.
2011-09-03 13:20 - TP4041 (How Barrow)
Persistent heavy rain :) Didn't check condition of trig.
2011-09-03 11:30 - TP1901 (Cannon Winder)
Permission to visit given by friendly farmer. Too overcast to see very far - pity. Plug intact.
2011-09-03 10:00 - TP4054 (Humphrey Head)
Plug missing, three sighting holes open. In between showers; drizzly views.
2011-08-30 12:25 - TP4700 (Meadowley)
Short detour up by edge of field then across to water tank. Trig getting overgrown; paint flaking; plug intact. Path down through the wood was congested - briars, bracken and sticky-cotton rosebay willowherb seeds everywhere.
2011-08-30 11:40 - TP6663 (Upper Hollicott)
Trig buried in N side of hedge at corner. Access by crawling though a gap. Plug intact. View of Clee Hills. Warm morning.
2011-08-26 15:20 - TP1625 (Bridgnorth)
Plug missing. The crack in the pillar is possibly getting worse. Nice sandstone edge with semi-view back to town. Bridgnorth (like Ludlow) seems to be one of those places where pedestrians never look to see where they are going :)
2011-08-26 13:30 - TP2137 (Chelmarsh)
Plug intact. Pillar close to path. Hazy view of Titterstone and Brown Clee. Gnome restored after photos.
2011-08-20 12:25 - TP7818 (Tees Head)
Ring station with central bolt, located on the edge of the Cross Fell plateau, adjacent to the higher of two large cairns on the route of the Pennine Way. Corresponds to OS Station T001 in block NY71 369015.875 534251.438 described as a Buried Block. Grid Ref deliberately entered incorrectly to distinguish this site from the Cross Fell trig point; actual separation is about 290 metres. The block was quite deeply buried under a covering of stones, rubbish and peaty gunk. Lettering on circumference very worn. Views towards Cow Green reservoir and Dun Fell.
2011-08-20 12:00 - TP0695 (Cross Fell)
Plug intact (surprising, given the location), extensive views but quite windy. From Langwathby station via Kirkland, returning through Blencarn. Tracks alternately dry and boggy as different strata were crossed.
2011-08-13 16:20 - TP7527 (Hospice of Hampsfell)
Scuffed bolt on roof of tower. Limestone pavement.
2011-08-13 13:40 - TP7523 (Saskills)
Up from caravan park on intermittent path/wet bracken. Small rivet, took a while to see it.
2011-08-13 11:00 - TP1356 (Bigland Tarn)
Plug intact, FB painted. Path around tarn then down through woodland. Humid day.
2011-08-06 13:15 - TP6651 (Ulpha Fell)
From road, across one field somewhat visible to farm. Soggy woodland with fallen trees. No view. Trig a bit dark and damp with plug missing. Squelched off to Grange-over-Sands to find train cancelled :(
2011-08-06 11:40 - TP0137 (Sampool Bridge)
Access by crossing the very busy road. Rivet about as interesting as usual; i.e not much. Rain returning.
2011-08-06 09:45 - TP1062 (Barrowfield)
Path via the inside-out view finder. Plug missing, pillar otherwise OK. Showery morning with distant thunder.
2011-07-31 12:55 - TP7747 (Buxton)
Within Health and Safety Lab premises. The station is located on a grassy bank without the usual support structure. Visible from the embankment of the disused railway line (which is a right of way despite the unwelcoming signs and CCTV). Looking East, theres a long, low concrete building with metal railings on top - the active station is beyond this.
2011-07-30 11:00 - TP5175 (North Side)
Slight damage to top, otherwise OK. Plug intact with raised lettering; one sighting hole open. Not far from road. Views towards Cross Fell and Howgills (and noisy M6).
2011-07-23 14:30 - TP1325 (Benson Knott)
Cairn on E top slightly higher but views more extensive from trig.
2011-07-23 11:55 - TP6461 (Thornyslack)
Barbed-wire on road gate, new fence and gate before trig. FB numbers have been painted. Good views. Waterworks buildings surrounded by CCTV.
2011-07-23 10:00 - TP1721 (Brunt Knott)
Stone-built pillar. Plug missing, graffiti on spider, one sighting hole open. Very quiet.
2011-07-16 11:50 - TP6295 (Syerston Aero)
From Kneeton via field margins (mostly good) then over painted metal gate onto airfield about 300yds S of trig and up along E side of hedge. Managed to avoid barbed wire and elec fence. Used secateurs to clear top of pillar; plug intact. Rain slowly clearing.
2011-07-09 13:25 - TP3444 (Grayrigg Forest)
Stone-built pillar, plug missing. View of Howgills with motorway lurking.
2011-07-09 09:55 - TP4837 (Millrigg Moor)
Plug intact and painted. All sighting holes open but couldn't see centre mark. Motorway heard but not seen.
2011-07-02 15:10 - TP4124 (Ives Head)
Approached from NW; gate at top of road avoids a wall climb. Plug intact; all sighting holes open with centre mark visible. Faded graffiti on one face. Pity about the crack; hopefully the location discourages cattle from using it as a scratching post. Long views over Loughborough but a dull walk to the railway station.
2011-07-02 12:10 - TP2338 (Cold Harbour)
Plug with raised lettering. S side of busy road, slightly below road level. Traces of paint on pillar, no view.
2011-07-02 11:00 - TP2987 (East Leake)
Plug intact; minor scrape mark on pillar - hedge trimmer maybe. N side of hedge, warm morning, dusty track, OK views.
2011-06-25 15:25 - TP5635 (Rempstone Hill)
Plug intact. Old damage to top of pillar. Scratchy hedge and elec fence.
2011-06-25 14:00 - TP6950 (Willoughby)
Roadside with FB part-buried. Plug intact (unexpected for the location). Not the most obvious place to site a trig.
2011-06-25 12:35 - TP4530 (Longcliff Hill)
Plug with raised lettering. N side of hedge, not far from path. Breezy.
2011-06-25 11:00 - TP3762 (Hickling Standard)
Plug intact. Base exposed. FB polished by cattle (who may also have been responsible for the angle of the pillar). Light rain and humid conditions so views not up to much.
2011-06-19 10:40 - TP1646 (Broad Hill)
Went to farm for permission but noone about.
2011-06-11 15:50 - TP3721 (Helm)

2011-06-04 13:40 - TP3611 (Hardendale Pike)
Near edge of flooded quarry.
Hardendale Pike site
2011-06-04 12:50 - TP0111 (Hardendale Fell)
Easily found but nothing special. Thought the neatly-built stone enclosure next to roadside pylon might contain something of interest - but it didn't :(
2011-06-04 12:05 - TP5592 (Ravensworth Fell)
Plug missing. Overcast so limited views.
2011-05-30 12:50 - TP5682 (Rigg Of England)

Side of track, plug replaced by cover. Breezy grey day.
2011-05-21 14:00 - TP5940 (Sheriffs Park)
Tarmac plug; FB facing into wood. Pillar defended by gorse and nettles. A ladder stile next to the pylon gives access to the adjacent field, saving a wall climb.
2011-05-21 12:20 - TP7379 (Knipe Moor)
Up through gorse. Cloudy so views might have been better.
2011-05-14 12:55 - TP3207 (Flusco Pike)
Tarmac plug, one sighting hole open. Good views.
2011-05-14 12:30 - TP7188 (Penrith (R))
In between the lines. Height tag present, 714.80 ft. Granite construction as would be expected here. Rivet in top corner. All in vgc. Railings falling apart though. No immediate view.
2011-05-14 12:15 - TP0110 (Stainton)
2011-05-14 12:10 - TP0593 (Penrith FBM Aux 1)
Found eventually; currently unmown.
2011-05-14 09:50 - TP5752 (Roundthorn)
Up by side of nature reserve then edge of field into wood. Plug intact, one sighting hole open, no view. Location seemed a bit surreal.
2011-05-07 12:10 - TP10198 (Daviss Bottom)
Presumably lost to roadworks/landscaping and replaced by passive station C1SK4952
2011-05-07 11:30 - TP0855 (Annesley Road)
Plug intact, low FB number. Rain, rain, rain :(
2011-05-07 11:15 - TP0198 (Home Farm Pillar)
Straightforward find thanks to Jeremy's description. Cover still in place. Raining steadily. The passive station database also lists C1SK5052 (with sketch, no photo) - last visited by OS Oct 1996. Presumably lost to roadworks and replaced by C1SK4952
2011-05-07 10:30 - TP0854 (Annesley Park)
From brow of track on W side, missed it on the first pass, found more by luck than judgement on the 2nd approach. Trees close together but ground cover not too bad. Moss covering on trig and is leaning slightly. Plug replaced by cover, hooks damaged. All quiet except for the one-way A road.
2011-05-02 11:20 - TP0138 (New Longton)
Winter Hill in the distance, surroundings otherwise very flat.
2011-04-30 14:30 - TP0941 (Awsworth)

2011-04-21 11:50 - TP3693 (Hazelwell)
Hedge trig. Plug intact. Pleasant riverside walk back to Bewdley - heard a cuckoo.
2011-04-16 12:25 - TP3607 (Hard Hill)
Plug missing, three sighting holes open. Low cloud, sun hiding
2011-04-16 11:00 - TP7459 (Green Fell)
Revisited on walk from Appleby to Hard Hill and back.
2011-04-09 16:10 - TP7494 (Keyworth)
Walked past outside the site; couldn't see it. Then did a circuit round the back along the footpath but no sign. Then asked security man at gate for permission to walk as far as the car park for a view - refused! Eventually managed to spot the station from across the road. This station appears to be the replacement for NOTT.
Keyworth active station
2011-04-09 11:20 - TP1586 (Brands Hill)
Edge of field; nothing there. Also checked the top margin of the wood. Pleasant sunny morning.
Brands Hill site
2011-04-09 10:10 - TP0200 (Thrumpton)
Road marker still present but fading. Moss-covered block, NW side or road. Bolt protrudes from block. Also noted trig symbol on map (OS Explorer 260, Edition A, revised 1999) located on S bank of river, NE of Thrumpton. This would appear to correspond to an entry in the OS trig marks database "The Wharf. Station number T135 in secondary block SK73. Bolt Dest 4/84. OSGB36 451261.125 331644.563" Location is adjacent to footpath; investigated but nothing found.
2011-04-09 09:40 - TP2450 (Cottagers Hill)
West side of hedge. Pillar broken off at sighting hole level with upper centre mark exposed. All metalwork intact. Warm morning with fields turning yellow. Butterflies along field margin including tortoiseshell, peacock, comma and orange tip.
2011-04-02 14:30 - TP7451 (Gibbet Hill)
Grid ref indicates edge of field. No sign of the marker but worth a visit for the view over the Trent valley.
Gibbet Hill site
2011-04-02 13:20 - TP1077 (Bassingfield)
Plug intact. All sighting holes open. Noisy road.
2011-04-02 11:45 - TP2234 (Clipston)
Plug replaced by tarmac. Scrubby bit of woodland next to ROC post (lid open). Easy approach from road to S.
2011-04-02 10:50 - TP3995 (Homestead Farm)
Plug intact. Overgrown corner between caravan and hedge.
2011-04-02 09:30 - TP6945 (Wilford Brickworks)
Overgrown area between the back of the Industrial Estate and new housing. Rain clearing.
Wilford Brickworks view towards site
2011-03-27 14:25 - TP6488 (Tingley Hall)
The pillar has taken a few knocks in relocation, but lucky to have survived the housing development. Plug cover supplied by JWR, it would appear.
2011-03-27 13:20 - TP2627 (Crow Nest)
Revisit. Used MickandKim's route - much easier. Views across Elland Road towards City.
2011-03-26 14:20 - TP2380 (Congel Hill)
Plug intact. Short walk from road.
2011-03-26 13:25 - TP6940 (Wighay Farm)
Plug intact. Not much of a location. Revisit 7 May 2011 09:45, no change.
2011-03-26 12:30 - TP4520 (Long Hill)
Well-used path up from Common Lane. Nice views. Lump of concrete in path near the top but probably not trig-significant.
2011-03-19 12:30 - TP4765 (Meldon Hill)
Remains only. Base with centre mark exposed, one angle-iron visible, pipework missing. Top, with resin cover and spider intact, on the ground. Concrete fragments scattered about. Nice views but not much trig.
2011-03-12 15:15 - TP3402 (Golf Course)
Tarmac plug; golf course surprisingly quiet for a mild Saturday afternoon. Access still easy.
2011-03-12 14:40 - TP6263 (Sunrise Hill)
Broken trig but park surviving.
2011-03-12 12:10 - TP10852 (Swingate Water Tower (1985) Centre)
Retrospective log; seen whilst visiting the nearby trig pillar.
Swingate Water Tower
2011-03-12 11:50 - TP6973 (Windmill Hill)
Plug intact, area surrounding the trig is fairly clear at the moment. OK from farmer; 4 friendly and not too noisy dogs. Also visited the water tower at Swingate reservoir, marked with a trig symbol on map.
2011-03-12 11:10 - TP6227 (Strelley)
Graffiti on waterworks bldgs inside the fence implies that there is a way in, but I didn't bother looking.
2011-03-12 10:15 - TP7291 (Nottingham)
This no longer appears on the OS map of active stations and www.bigf.ac.uk/station_logs/Archlogs.xls lists it as dead. From grid ref and aerial map, I estimated that the station would have been at the S end of the 7th out of 8 long, single-storey blds aligned N-S. Tried various vantage points to view this; best seemed to be by standing on top of the solid wooden fence next to the SW corner of the site (passers-by ignored me; evidently photographing government buildings in this way is not considered unusual). Would have expected to see the active station but no sign. So suspect its gone, maybe replaced by the fairly recent station at Keyworth.
2011-03-12 08:45 - TP9260 (Council House Dome)
Difficult to miss but wouldn't have thought that it would be especially prominent from a distance.
2011-03-05 15:45 - TP0715 (Loath Hill)
Passing by so a revisit. Decoy gone, all quiet. Still raining.
2011-03-05 14:00 - TP6767 (Watchwood)
Painted white and currently graffiti-free. Plug intact. Pleasant woodland; limited views. Noisy road nearby.
2011-03-05 12:30 - TP2811 (Dorket Head)
Plug intact. FB buried - dug out. Busy road junction in the rain.
2011-03-05 12:08 - TP9610 (Lowdham Institute Tower)
Originally Lowdham Grange Borstal and rebuilt (according to wiki) in 1998. Aerial view shows modern buildings with no sign of a tower. Location corresponds to the perimeter of the current HMP. Buildings screened by trees. Passed by at a distance whilst walking from Lowdham railway station to Arnold; the roadside guard frogs were interesting.
Lowdham - arrow shows location of former tower
2011-03-05 11:30 - TP4195 (Killisick Lane)
Plug missing, spider offset. FB coated in clay - gave it a clean. Paint covering minor damage.
2011-03-05 11:15 - TP0887 (Arnold Lodge)
Plug intact, FB facing into field. Sheep still there. Drizzly day.
2011-02-26 14:40 - TP3480 (Green Hill)
Site overgrown and inaccessible.
Green Hill faraway
2011-02-26 13:30 - TP5877 (Sewage Farm)
Footpath then easy track up to level crossing. FB part-buried. Plug missing. Seen again from train on the way back.
2011-02-26 12:10 - TP4561 (Lowdham Lodge)
Up from the layby. Plug intact. Field corner still very muddy. Rainy view across the Trent valley.
2011-02-26 10:15 - TP6471 (Thurgarton Quarters)
Plug replaced by plastic cover. Top corner of pillar damaged. Gate slowly becoming part of the hedge. Rainy day - almost a view. Paths to Lowdham very muddy.
2011-02-19 11:45 - TP4377 (Laxton)
Plug replaced by plastic cover. Two sighting holes open. Easy access around outside of compound. Persistent rain.
2011-02-19 08:20 - TP6523 (Top Farm)
Plug intact. NW side of hedge. All quiet (apart from the A1) on a rainy morning.
2011-02-12 15:50 - TP7316 (Mansfield West Notts College)
The plug has been stolen since the previous visit just over a year ago. All sighting holes open and upper centre mark visible. Channels cut from spider-ends and hooks to edge of pillar - doesn't look like vandalism but purpose unclear. FB number removed but viewed from a distance, maybe a ghostly S_4_2 can be seen. An oddity.
Mansfield West Notts College trig
2011-02-12 12:50 - TP6751 (Warren Hill)
This is no longer an easy roadside bag. Trig is now on the other side of a new metal fence. Earth moving equipment active on site. Gate was open so sneaked in for a quick visit. Plug intact, good condition - looks like the pillar will survive the developments but may become inaccessible.
2011-02-12 11:50 - TP0715 (Loath Hill)
This was a strange one! From the footpath, up through open-ish woodland emerging by the masts. There was a rotating gadget next to the trig with two pigeons attached (thankfully not alive!). I then noticed a camouflaged hide with apparently someone asleep inside. Took hasty photos and departed.
2011-02-12 10:10 - TP3023 (Edingley)
Viewed by permission of the friendly farmer. Plug intact, one sighting hole open; maybe a slight lean. Was told that the pillar was originally in a hedgeline and moved to its new home with a JCB when the hedge was dug up.
2011-02-05 13:20 - TP5394 (Penshaw Hill)
Plug missing and plaque gone. Paint flaking.
2011-02-05 12:35 - TP3663 (Hasting Hill)
Plug missing and some large chunks of the pillar gone. Graffiti. A bit sad. Located above a small disused quarry.
2011-02-05 11:00 - TP6613 (Tunstall Hills)
Plug missing. Pillar recently painted. Rocky outcrop with good views.
2011-01-30 12:00 - TP6548 (Totley)
Revisited. Plug intact. vgc
2011-01-30 11:15 - TP7681 (Owler Bar)
Owler Bar is listed as a rivet in the OS Passive Station database with station id C1SK2877. There is no sketch or photo. The coordinates point to a location on the N side of the B6054, a little over 500 metres SE from the Barbrook surface block (C1SK2778). Both locations correspond to a grassy verge between a layby and drystone wall. Spent a while probing the rubbish-strewn site but nothing found and no roadside markers evident. Owler Bar was last visited by the OS in 1997 whilst the record for Barbrook dates from 1999. Given the proximity, it therefore seems possible that the Owler Bar rivet was destroyed with Barbrook replacing it.
2011-01-30 10:45 - TP0195 (Barbrook)
Revisit. Block still exposed and easy to find at present.
2011-01-29 14:25 - TP4550 (Lound Wood)
Plug replaced by plastic cover. Unusually, the trig is set at an angle to the hedgeline. Damage around the FB appears to be recent; maybe the hedge trimmer took a swipe at it.
2011-01-29 13:20 - TP2951 (Eakring Brail)
Big empty field and nothing along the edge of the wood.
Eakring Brail site
2011-01-29 12:50 - TP2877 (Dukes Wood)
Plug intact. Not too difficult to find in winter. Interesting grid reference.
2011-01-29 11:30 - TP3485 (Green Ridges)
Plug intact. Agricultural views on a cold, drab sort of day. Single wind turbine in an adjacent field.
2011-01-22 12:10 - TP3837 (Highgate)
Edge of a field with watchful sheep. Plug intact.
2011-01-22 09:45 - TP2676 (Culgaith)
Looks as though a slight realignment of the road did for it.
2011-01-22 09:40 - TP7129 (Rose Bank)
SE side of fence. Plug intact. Frosty morning - Cross Fell hidden in cloud.
2011-01-15 15:25 - TP5246 (Ossington)
Easily visible from the road but the site is starting to look like a rubbish tip. Pillar in good condition apart from fallen. Odd bunker on the other side of the road.
2011-01-15 13:30 - TP2056 (Caunton)
Walked through the village with all its corners, past the windmill, to the farm entrance. Nothing in the way of significant garden ornaments. Then around the back, via a muddy bridleway and a short detour up to the high point in the field. Nothing there.
Caunton View S from track alongside former trig site.
2011-01-15 11:55 - TP7680 (Little Carlton)
The OS passive station database lists an entry for C1SK7657, Little Carlton, at SK767576. There is no sketch or photo and the detailed coordinate values are missing. The location corresponds to a section of the A616 which appears to have been realigned and raised above the base of adjacent hedges. Last visited by OS in 1993. The passive database entry of the rivet at nearby Kelham, C1SK7755, dates from 1999. So this suggests that the Little Carlton rivet was lost to roadworks and replaced by Kelham.
Little Carlton E verge, looking NW, showing road level relative to the fields.
2011-01-15 11:25 - TP4152 (Kelham Hills)
Wrong side of the fence. Overcast morning.
2011-01-15 09:25 - TP0206 (Kelham)
Rivet on concrete surround, roadside, edge of village. Easy to find, easier to forget.
2011-01-15 09:05 - TP9123 (Kelham Hall Belfry)
Glimpsed though trees from roadside E of river and from the bridge.
2010-12-30 11:40 - TP1579 (Bramley Resr)
Revisit. Tight post-Christmas squeeze through the railings. Plug replaced by plastic cover which has been broken (burnt?) through. All sighting-holes open. Foggy, no views.
2010-12-11 14:30 - TP1109 (Beacon Hill North)
Plug missing; all sighting holes open but couldn't see centre mark. Base exposed.
2010-12-11 10:55 - TP6735 (Warden Law)
Off the edge. Views of sea and Sunderland.
Warden Law site
2010-11-20 14:35 - TP3551 (Hackenthorpe)
The same householder lives here and was in when we called. Still very friendly. He unlocked the garden gate for us to enable access to the trig. Thanks to Andy for setting up what proved to be an unexpectedly successful trigging expedition.
2010-11-20 12:00 - TP0157 (Roman Ridge)
Although the lamp posts have changed, the pipe nail in the top of a wooden fence post still exists to indicate the general area. Also noted a nail set in the edge of the pavement; not shown on the OS sketch but seems likely to have been placed as a marker for the block. Measuring back from the latter, found a large, fairly flat-topped, rock just below the surface. We also measured from the fence and spent some time digging around the probable location. Plenty of small stones so difficult to probe, but no concrete found. Most likely conclusion is that the block has gone. But it occurred to me on the way home that the large flat rock might have been placed as a covering for the block; the next visitor might like to take a spade and verify this :)
2010-11-20 11:10 - TP7458 (Hoober)
2010-11-20 10:50 - TP5595 (Rawmarsh Resr)
Revisited. Still in good condition.
2010-11-20 10:10 - TP6337 (Templeborough)
Plug intact and all in good condition. The pillar is now surrounded by trees so no view.
2010-11-13 16:35 - TP3020 (Eden Hall)
Visited for completeness but nothing of interest.
2010-11-13 14:25 - TP6621 (Tuthill Quarry)
No spider, plug or FB. Top has taken a battering but one loop remains. Should be reported to the RSPCT. Nice view though. Plenty of gaps in the fence to N, then a short steep ascent.
2010-11-13 12:50 - TP0126 (Eagle Farm)
2010-11-13 11:15 - TP1084 (Batter Law Hill)
Tussocky small hill. Plug replaced by tarmac but broken through.
2010-11-06 15:05 - TP3793 (High Moorsley)
Low FB number. Pleasant afternoon. Met the farmer - friendly, although I think he was querying my slight trespass; not sure as I couldn't understand his accent :)
2010-11-06 13:00 - TP4585 (Lumley West Pit)
Fence line, muddy field. No trig
2010-11-06 10:40 - TP2120 (Charlaw Moor)
Plug intact. Trig hiding behind hedge in-between mast and ROC post.
2010-11-06 09:35 - TP3168 (Findon Cottages)
Corner of wood. Plug replaced by tarmac; one sighting hole open; paintwork starting to wear. Sharp views up valley.
2010-10-23 13:45 - TP4695 (Maulds Meaburn Moor)
Plug intact. Adoption plaque. Soggy field with staring sheep. An active day on Warcop range to judge by the distant sound of explosions.
2010-10-23 11:55 - TP5518 (Powson Knott)
Plug intact; slight damage to top with spider-ends exposed. All sighting holes open. Would have been a good view were it not for the rain.
2010-10-16 14:15 - TP6216 (Stoterley Hill)
Plug replaced by tarmac, 3 sighting holes open; pillar has been painted since GRP's visit. Pleasant grassy tracks up from road.
2010-10-16 12:45 - TP5744 (Roughside Moor)
Track W of Edmundbyers then faint path by side of Grouse Butts. Plug intact, 1 SH open, smooth concrete. Very good views.
2010-10-09 12:55 - TP2865 (Dry Rigg)
Dull drizzly autumn day. Plug intact, one sighting hole open, pillar has remnants of paint. Cloud down - no view other than a row of fence posts. Approached from E; soggy in places but could have been worse.
2010-10-02 15:30 - TP5494 (Pontop Pike)
Hooks flattened but the plug has survived albeit slightly damaged. Reasonable views to E. Discarded beer cans, burnt patches of ground and graffiti provide evidence of other visitors.
2010-10-02 13:20 - TP0121 (Wheatley Hill)
Easily found thanks to previous visitors. Seat with marker stone next to the 1941 wall plaque. Red Admiral on brambles nearby.
2010-10-02 12:40 - TP9735 (Burnhope TV Mast)
Retrospective log. Mast seen from road junction to North. More interesting than a Fenomark :)
2010-10-02 11:05 - TP4051 (Humber Hill)
All sighting holes open, tarmac plug; exposed plinth leaning very slightly. Pillar located at the edge of a small, disused quarry. Bright chilly views.
2010-07-10 13:10 - TP4789 (Mickle Fell)
Tarmac plug, top damaged; paint mostly gone apart from N face of pillar. Low cloud and intermittent rain - no view. Ghost sheep. Approached from S via the fence; going OK at first then deteriorating. Continued down to Maize Beck (too full to cross) then High Cup and down to Dufton.
2010-07-03 15:20 - TP3074 (Esh)
Field with no trig but views over Weardale.
2010-07-03 14:20 - TP3432 (Grange Farm)
Plug intact. Overgrown corner of field; gate was open. Warm and sunny.
2010-07-03 11:45 - TP5268 (Oxen Law)
Plug with raised lettering; one sighting hole open. A few butterflies about but none of the scarcer species suggested by the notice board at roadside disused quarry to S.
2010-07-03 10:20 - TP5798 (Sand Edge Common)
Plug replaced by plastic cover; one sighting hole open; loops slightly above top surface of pillar. Breezy with good views into Weardale.
2010-06-26 14:20 - TP7015 (Wolfcleugh Common)
Slow pathless plod through heather from Killhope Law to road then easier going. Trig on S side of fence; top repaired, plug replaced by resin cover. Humid with dark clouds gathering but the rain went somewhere else.
2010-06-26 12:35 - TP4193 (Killhope Law)
Path up from the mining museum has been diverted around the woodland until Autumn whilst tree felling is completed. Half-way up is a peculiar hollow waymarker - presumably meant to be a trail sculpture but it looked more like a discarded bag of cement :) Trig in poor condition with about half the top screed gone; plug missing; numerous small cracks in the pillar surface; plinth crumbling. Graffiti scratched on FB and spider. Lots of cotton grass and cloudberry.
2010-06-19 14:40 - TP2353 (Collier Law)
One sighting hole open. Plug replaced by resin cover. Views across Weardale. Sheep had ignored the 'no trespassing' sign and found a way into the mast compound. Trig gets an extra point for being one of the 'No S prefix' on the FB number.
2010-06-19 13:20 - TP4025 (Horseshoe Hill)
Plug replaced by resin cover; one sighting hole open. Lichen growing on upper surfaces of pillar. Flat top; apart from the name, a slightly dull hill.
2010-06-19 12:10 - TP1526 (Bolts Law Hunstanworth)
W side of fence. Plug missing, 1 sighting hole open. Easy approach via track of former railway.
2010-06-12 14:40 - TP6761 (Warton Crag)
Plug missing, 2 sighting holes open. Graffiti on the spider and the FB has taken a few knocks. Immediate views a bit restricted.
2010-06-12 12:05 - TP7373 (Cockshot Lane, Storth)
Rivet with benchmark
2010-06-12 10:55 - TP0889 (Arnside Knott)
Tidily painted. Plug missing, otherwise vgc.
2010-06-05 13:55 - TP6689 (View Field)
Short way into field; plug missing, one sighting-hole open. Views in most directions (excepting Heysham). Warm and sunny day.
2010-06-05 11:45 - TP4088 (Hutton Heads)
Plug missing. Sheep field. Views up the Lune valley and northern edge of the Bowland Fells.
2010-06-05 11:15 - TP0139 (Halton)
2010-05-31 13:00 - TP6488 (Tingley Hall)
Another visit after reading recent reports. Not sure about this one. I thought about asking the occupants of Tingley Hall bungalow about the fate of the trig at the top of their garden only to find that the bungalow and garage have been demolished and all surface vegetation removed. A fence surrounds the building site with an earth bank on the inside. Noone was about and it would have been easy enough to get onto the site through an obvious gap but I decided not to. Views over the fence obstructed by new houses and building plant/materials which make it difficult to determine reference points to how it used to be, but unless the trig is behind the fence at the top of the site then its gone - at least for now.
2010-05-31 10:25 - TP7278 (Leeds)
Revisit. Still on the roof of the former OS offices, visible from the rear of the garage premises across the road. The original cone has been replaced by a dome. OS have moved to Leigh House, just down the road on Varley St.
2010-05-30 16:05 - TP5604 (Red Bank)
Plug replaced by cover. Good views across the bay; elsewhere too many caravans.
2010-05-30 14:25 - TP6542 (Torrisholme Barrow)
Nice views, including Ingleborough and Morecambe Bay, but a shame that the trig is in such a bad state. Top gone, plug and spider missing. Access from footpath via stile at SW corner of field.
2010-05-30 12:35 - TP5263 (Overton Hall)
All sighting holes open but centre mark not visible. Plug replaced by plastic cover. Traces of paint. Breezy views.
2010-05-22 13:05 - TP1783 (Burnhope Seat)
Plug missing, minor damage to top with a bit of graffiti and one spider-end exposed, but not as bad as the trig on Highwatch Currick. One sighting hole open. Substantial plinth contrasting with the mini-cairn which marks the actual top. The plinth is slightly undercut and has its own steps. Some emerald green boggy patches lurking by the fence despite the warm weather.
2010-05-22 11:35 - TP3841 (Highwatch Currick)
Top damaged - some through weathering and some perhaps deliberate. Plug replaced by resin cover. Crack extending through sighting hole. Hazy views down Weardale.
2010-05-15 15:10 - TP7495 (Wear Head)
Still there. Also non-OS pillar just over the wall a short distance up the road.
2010-05-15 13:45 - TP2341 (Coldberry End)
Plug replaced by tarmac; one sighting hole open. Paint flaking off pillar. Good views over reservoir to Mickle Fell, also towards Cross Fell. Met trail bikers on descent to Weardale.
2010-05-08 12:15 - TP7472 (Herdship Fell)
Concrete at the end of one arm has crumbled; another arm is covered. Possibly the whole thing is on a slight tilt. Nice views - Mickle Fell beyond the reservoir, Meldon Hill and the Cross Fell range.
2010-05-03 13:25 - TP7459 (Green Fell)
Small rivet with a big view
2010-05-01 14:50 - TP2625 (Crow Coal Hill)
Resin cover, 1 sighting hole open. Rain approaching.
2010-05-01 13:40 - TP0116 (Lintzgarth)
Bridge parapet looks to have been rebuilt. Details for the replacement bolt, originally recorded here, now moved to the log for Lintzgarth 2.
2010-05-01 13:30 - TP7870 (Lintzgarth 2)
Not dead but resting! Theres a photo in the OS passive database at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpics/jpg/C1NY9243.jpg which shows the new location of this station. Layby on N side of road, opposite the flue arch. At the W end of this is a seat on a concrete plinth, and on the NW corner of the plinth is an OS bolt, covered by moss.
2010-05-01 12:30 - TP4431 (Lintzgarth Common)
Plug intact; two sighting holes open. N side of wall sited close to a gate; presumably the trig was there first. Cloud slowly lifting.
2010-05-01 11:15 - TP1995 (Carr Brow Moor)
Plug intact with neatly added lettering; 1 sighting hole open. Light drizzle - no view into Weardale.
2010-04-24 15:05 - TP7436 (School Top)
Louth Road. Unusual location.
2010-04-24 12:10 - TP3702 (Healing Creek)
Plug intact; pillar looking a bit overgrown and neglected. Went for a direct crossing of the creek; not too wide near the security fence but didn't quite make it - deep mud! 8-()
2010-04-17 14:25 - TP1415 (Black Hill)
Plug intact, 1 sighting hole open. Approached alongside wall from Swindale Head. Nice views into Weardale.
2010-04-17 12:10 - TP3138 (Fendrith Hill)
Plug missing; one sighting hole open. Windy with cotton wool clouds. A few remnants of snow in the gullies. Views into upper Teesdale.
2010-04-10 15:20 - TP5442 (Pikestone Fell)
Plug missing; one sighting hole open. No path but not far from track alongside wall.
2010-04-10 14:30 - TP3188 (Five Pikes)
Plug missing; one sighting hole open. Minor surface cracks on SW face. Peaceful. Hazy views.
2010-04-10 12:20 - TP2051 (Catterick Moss)
Initially a faint track from the road then plod through heather. Plug missing; one sighting hole open; minor graffiti on spider. Good views over Stanhope.
2010-04-10 11:20 - TP1523 (Bollihope Carrs)
Plug replaced by resin cover; one sighting hole open. Warm spring morning. Track leaves the Stanhope road just S of col; boggy at first then reasonable.
2010-04-06 13:30 - TP1060 (Barrow Hill)
Plug missing. Trig still very smart from Garth's paint job although the graffiti is starting to reappear. Contrasting urban and distant views.
2010-04-03 12:40 - TP4302 (Knowle Hill)
Plug intact. Detour off footpath then up through open woodland. Overcast.
2010-04-01 11:05 - TP5243 (Orton Hill)
Easy access- just off track. Surprisingly good views given the proximity of Wolverhampton suburbs. Plug replaced by cover; TS=JD on the spider. Fake tree (disguised comms mast) visible to S.
2010-03-28 12:50 - TP7376 (York Minster)
A bolt with a view. Quite windy.
2010-03-20 13:10 - TP4697 (Mayland Lea Farm)
Plug missing. Side of wall. Still raining so views disappointing.
2010-03-20 10:40 - TP1505 (Blue House)
Plug missing. At side of farm road. Drizzly day.
2010-03-13 15:00 - TP2778 (Diggins)
2010-03-13 12:05 - TP4268 (Knitsley Fell)
Plug missing; one sighting hole open. Good views across Wolsingham.
2010-03-13 10:30 - TP0513 (Wolsingham)
Height tag still present; vgc. Near road junction.
2010-03-06 15:15 - TP6260 (Sunniside)
Gone. Low cloud; traces of snow remaining at field edge.
2010-03-06 13:40 - TP5459 (Pit House Plantation)
Tarmac plug. Low cloud - no view. Sheep looking on.
2010-03-06 11:50 - TP5266 (Ox Close Farm)
2010-03-06 11:45 - TP7132 (Tripsy Bank)
Plug missing. Plinth. Muddy.
2010-03-06 10:05 - TP3788 (High House)
Plug missing but at least the trig has survived the hedge trimmer. Overcast morning; snowdrops growing at roadside.
2010-02-27 12:40 - TP3040 (Eldon Hall Farm)
Plug missing; all sighting holes open. Pleasant location, good views; delayed sunshine.
2010-02-27 11:15 - TP3779 (High Copelaw Farm)
Plug intact; slight damage to top. W side of hedge. Grey day.
2010-02-20 12:05 - TP2159 (Chilton Grange)
2010-02-20 10:35 - TP6601 (Tudhoe Moor Farm)
Nothing of interest, except perhaps for the tree in the middle of the car park; I wonder why it was spared?
Tudhoe Moor Farm site
2010-02-20 08:55 - TP2977 (East Grange)
Plug missing; FB facing into hedge. Cold and sunny.
2010-02-16 08:00 - TP2199 (Clarkes Hill Resr)
Friendly workmen; no problem in allowing access. Trig in vgc; plug intact. Tree in the corner of the compound has been cut down but the pillar doesn't appear to be at risk from the developments. Not clear how they got the earth-moving plant inside (forgot to ask) as the gate with steps is the only entrance. High walls topped with broken glass, inner security fence (electrified I think), spiky-topped gate with barbed-wire surround and now CCTV. United Utilities certainly keep their water supplies safe! Thanks to Keith Stevens and Bonatti for the alert on this one.
2010-02-13 14:35 - TP3080 (Etherley Lane)
W side of hedge. Plug missing. Two gates from road.
2010-02-13 12:50 - TP0696 (Royal Oak)
New plantation, little evidence of former quarry; no trig :(
Royal Oak site
2010-02-13 12:10 - TP6560 (Toy Top)
Just inside woodland. Plug missing.
2010-02-13 10:05 - TP4179 (Keverstone Grange)
Plug replaced. Trig at edge of wet field, FB facing E. Approached through wood from fp.
2010-02-06 12:50 - TP5215 (Old Cassop)
One sighting hole open, plug missing. No views today. Approach along pleasant grassy track by field edge.
2010-02-06 11:15 - TP5574 (Raisby Hill)
Quarry still expanding; trig would have been approx 200m inside perimeter. Dense fog - no view. Field edge very sticky.
2010-02-06 10:20 - TP0124 (Garmondsway)
No P/N as per sketch but the post that it was attached to is still there. The station is on a line from this, perpendicular to the hedge. Just below surface, covered by grass. Scruffy area - the locals appear to use the verge as a rubbish tip. Nearby electricity pylons fizzing in the mist.
2010-01-30 13:05 - TP3647 (Hart)
Plug missing. Sunny views over Hartlepool. Short detour off footpath.
2010-01-30 11:35 - TP5615 (Red Lion Farm)
Plug intact. Bright morning. Views over Billingham towards the North York Moors.
2010-01-23 16:15 - TP0128 (Hartlepool)
Easy find. Good condition. Breezy.
2010-01-23 11:35 - TP1250 (Bells Tip)
The hole where the trig used to be is obvious enough but despite a good look around could find no sign of any remains. Plenty of slag from the former ironworks plus some brickwork but no concrete fragments at all. Possibility therefore that the trig was removed intact rather than demolished on site? The land is still for sale but no sign of any developments. Impressive landscape in its own way.
2010-01-16 14:50 - TP5622 (Reddings Hill)
Field corner. Plug replaced by cover. Approached via footpath from E; easier to detour round to N of house than try to figure out the official route through the garden. Dull afternoon.
2010-01-16 13:40 - TP3059 (Embleton Old Hall)
Just inside fence at field corner. Plug missing. Approached via the icy rail trail on a drab day.
2010-01-16 09:55 - TP3978 (Holme House Farm)
The mapped right of way has been diverted alongside the prison wall. The trig survives - no apparent progress with the industrial park since the previous visitor. Plug intact. No views worth mentioning.
2010-01-09 12:35 - TP6813 (West House Field)
Hedge trig, plug missing, FB facing N. Slow, snowy plod.
2010-01-09 11:00 - TP3673 (Hauxley)
Gone. Views of Billingham.
2010-01-02 13:40 - TP0909 (Askerton Hill)
Hedge trig, plug missing. Cold, snowy afternoon. Followed the disused railway line back to Newark.
2010-01-02 11:40 - TP3223 (Folly Hill)
As expected, no pillar, but found the surface block which replaced it. OS benchmark database records this as TF05/T022 and notes "pillar replaced by block 3/65". This is located on the S verge of the farm track, approx 12 ft NW from a leaning electricity pole. 2" dia hemispherical bolt, i.e. different shape from an upper centre mark so this is a replacement rather than the remains of the original pillar.
2010-01-02 10:25 - TP2863 (Dry Doddington)
Chunk missing with insides exposed; surface cracks. Plug intact. Very cold day.
2009-12-23 11:55 - TP2129 (Chase Pool Lodge)
Plug intact; frosty field with hazy views. Access from gateway at road junction.
2009-12-23 11:30 - TP0237 (Greensforge)
Frosty morning - block still exposed. Looks more like a bolt than a rivet.
2009-12-19 12:00 - TP2762 (Denton Cross Roads)
Plug missing. FB on field side of hedge.
2009-12-19 09:35 - TP1120 (Beaumont Hill)
Tarmac plug, pillar leaning slightly. OK from friendly farmer who remembered other visitors. Sunshine and light snow cover.
2009-12-12 15:35 - TP3632 (Harmston)
Plug inact; paintwork patchy. Muddy lane at sunset.

Approached from SW via soggy track. Cloud arrived at top just before I did and cleared soon after I left. Good views from lower down. 2009-10-31 11:10 - TP7540 (Driffield East)
Approached from N along green lane to where the right of way turns W then followed NE side of hedge. From where the hedge meets the N edge of the woodland, the trig is just a short way in. Hiding in the verge as usual.
2009-08-01 12:25 - TP2991 (East Marsh)
A buried trig - unusual! Thanks Brisey - would never have suspected this one. Plug intact and top surface OK; rest of pillar presumed to be in good condition. Industrial views of Salt End across the Estuary and the flare stacks around Killingholme. An interesting walk from the bridge; hundreds of butterflies - mostly large/small and green-veined whites and painted ladies also peacocks, small tortoiseshells, common blue and meadow browns. Lots of ladybirds also. Several NRA survey bolts in the embankment.
2009-07-25 13:10 - TP7467 (Bink Moss)

2009-06-26 14:15 - TP4027 (Horsfield)
Thanks to Andy Bown for making the arrangements with Robinsons Brewery for this visit. We met up at the entrance to the packaging centre on Bredbury Park Way; signed in, were given id badges and high-vis jackets and then escorted to the pillar by a young lady who probably learned far more about trigs than she might reasonably have wanted to know 8-) Still, trig geeks must make a change of sorts from beer bores. Trig in the NE corner of the site on some waste ground; plug replaced otherwise vgc; FB facing away from the security fence. Surprised to see about 15 orchids growing next to the pillar - identified by Rob Woodall as Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) - thanks!. Subject to prior arrangement (phone or email the head office in Stockport) Robinsons seem quite happy to allow further visits. Friday afternoon seems to be a good time as we happened to arrive just as the shift was finishing for the day.

2009-06-06 10:40 - TP3930 (Hillingdon Farm)
Approached from SE via footpath; frisky heifers with a bull than ran away when it saw me. Steady drizzle plus an electric fence that I unintentionally confirmed was live. Another day, another trig... Plug missing, base exposed, two sighting holes open. Too wet for views.
2009-05-30 12:20 - TP2356 (Collinsons Hill)
Plug missing, top slightly damaged, one sighting hole open, base exposed. Warm, hazy day; Tan Hill Inn seen in the distance and Bowes Castle to E but view dominated by the A66 'motorway'. Approached from Pennine Way then hard track for most of the remainder. Met GOML on the way back but as far as I know (map out of date) this is an access area.
2009-05-25 13:40 - TP5129 (Nine Standards Rigg)
The pillar is a bit worse for wear; no FB, plug replaced by resin cover, top damaged with two spider-ends exposed and some loose stonework. Revisited whilst looking for the OS Buried Block "Millstone Rigg" at (382448.063,506409.781). The grid ref put this very close to the toposcope. Nothing found although theres a shallow circular depression just to N. The OS records give a last maintenance date of 1983 whereas the topo was constructed 1981 so that doesn't explain its absence. Curious that the block is little more that 300 metres from the pillar, with a clear line of sight to it, and was constructed at much the same time.
2009-05-23 14:40 - TP2691 (Currack Rigg)
Tarmac plug. Immediate surroundings a bit drab but good views into Teesdale.
2009-05-23 11:50 - TP2185 (Citron Seat)

2009-05-09 12:05 - TP5115 (Newsham Moor)
Plug intact, hooks protruding above top surface, 3 sighting holes open. Showers passing over. NW side of the wall forming the county boundary. Right of way through Stang Forest closed for a rallying event - noone about so I ignored the signs.
2009-05-09 10:25 - TP3032 (Eggmartin Hill)
Plug intact, all sighting holes open with centre mark visible, hooks protruding above top surface with one slightly flattened, plinth. ROC post. Good views. Dark clouds, bright sunshine, breezy.
2009-05-04 10:05 - TP7509 (Manchester)
OS Active Station MANH, located on the roof of Abraham Moss Leisure Centre/College on Crescent Road. Not visible from the main road but can be seen by following the access road on the SW side of the buildings, next to the tram lines. The station is of the usual 'dome on a pole' variety and is viewable from just outside the entrance to the school and Crumpsall Library. All quiet on a Bank Holiday morning. According to www.bigf.ac.uk, MANH was installed on 20 Jan 2009, replacing MANC at the same location.
2009-05-02 17:00 - TP6259 (Sunningdale Farm)
Gone to road 'improvements'.
Sunningdale Farm site
2009-05-02 15:50 - TP6926 (Whorley Resr)
Straighforward access. All reservoir trigs should be like this. Plug missing, FB a bit overgrown, nice views to S across the valley.
2009-05-02 12:30 - TP3252 (Fox Covert)
Sneaked off the track round the edge of the newish plantation. Hopefully the tall elec fence is to deter deer rather than trig baggers (its avoidable anyway). Nothing to see; no trig, not even a hill anymore.
2009-05-02 10:00 - TP0119 (Sandwath)
Two visits, nothing found and, on balance, I think it might have gone, possibly to roadworks. The marker nail on fence post at W side of road is still present, likewise the gate (although maybe the gatepost has been replaced). On the E side, theres a nail in the top rail of the fence, most probably not OS; the two E side references on the sketch are heavily overgrown and no longer usable. From the road edge, the ground slopes down to the base of the hedge/fence; estimating that the block would have been about 1 metre out from the hedge then the height difference is much less and extra buried depth shouldn't have been a problem. Ground quite soft; easy to probe down to about 1 ft depth but plenty of small stones giving false positives. The only other point of interest was a 1" diameter bolt, embedded in the tarmac, centre of the N-bound side of road and slightly S of my estimated location for the block. This doesn't appear on the sketch and might not be OS but it does resemble the marker nail for C1NZ5111 (Newby Grange). Probed both sides of the road at this point but nothing. Seems unlikely that this bolt is itself a replacement for the original block. Have contacted the OS for further info but they simply responded that the passive database is a 'frozen' data set and no further info is available.
2009-04-25 13:10 - TP7507 (High Seat)
Circular trigonometrical ground station. Described in the OS database as a buried block at 380204.969 501262.813 Thought initially that it had gone but found in a shallow hole with a covering of vegetation. Either the circumference never had any lettering or else it has worn away. Conical bolt. Located close to a small pile on stones on the path.
2009-04-25 10:25 - TP6943 (Wild Boar Fell)
Revisited. Noted that the spider is offset. Hazy morning.
2009-04-25 09:10 - TP7506 (Swarth Fell Pike)
Circular trigonometrical ground station recorded in the OS database as a buried block at 376145.719 495746.813. (Same style as Branstree). W side of fence, close to a stile and cairn. Lettering distinct and in good condition. Conical centre bolt. Not quite visible from the path on the other side of the fence but the station was exposed so surprising that it hasn't been noticed before.
2009-04-18 13:00 - TP7450 (Toton Sidings)
2009-04-18 12:30 - TP3764 (High Acre)
Plug intact, FB still obscured. Paint peeling slightly. Very nice garden.
2009-04-18 11:55 - TP6165 (Stapleford)
Plug intact, ivy growing on pillar. Approached from Sisley Avenue, then edge of field behind houses. Almost a sunny morning. Very suburban feel despite the open field.
2009-04-18 11:00 - TP6166 (Stapleford Hill)
Plastic plug cover is now missing; top surface damaged with one spider-end exposed. Pleasant woodland, inevitable urban graffiti.
2009-04-11 13:45 - TP3158 (Field Farm)
Plug intact. Spider marked TS=JD. Hedge trig just off the road on a sunny spring day.
2009-04-09 13:00 - TP3446 (Great Barr)
Gorse, fences, motorway noise, no trig.
2009-04-09 12:00 - TP0241 (Pheasey)
Displaced as reported by dal. Perhaps someone thought that it was a marker for buried treasure. Block easily spotted by the side of the lane (still a rubbish tip). A surface block on the surface for a change.
2009-04-09 11:30 - TP1049 (Barr Beacon Resr)
Plug intact; didn't notice any damage to pillar. Located on top of reservoir near SW corner. Fence awkward but not the worst of its kind. Good views, grey day.
2009-04-04 14:10 - TP2449 (Coton Park)
Under a tree. Plug intact, back sighting-hole open.
2009-04-04 12:25 - TP1532 (Borough Fields)
Short detour off footpath. Pillar sited at edge of track; plug intact. Hazy but pleasant views.
2009-04-04 11:05 - TP3525 (Grove Farm)
Got confused by the footpath and went astray somewhere in the garden centre. Once into the field beyond, the trig was easy. Plug intact. Hazy views.
2009-03-29 13:40 - TP2108 (Champany Hill)
Revisited to look for the Fenomark at ~ SE3010504977. The grid ref put this N of the reservoir, close to the intersection of footpath and hedge. Nothing found but nice views anyway.
2009-03-29 13:40 - TP7839 (New Champany Resr)
Secondary block SE22, station number T275. The grid reference puts this on a hedgeline N of the reservoir, close to where a footpath crosses by a stile. The field had been ploughed leaving very little undisturbed ground alongside the hedge. Nothing found next to or under the stile. So the mark has probably gone although the anchoring pin could still be buried. Have seen Fenomarks in Hebden Bridge and Humberside, neither of which are in the trig marks database and therefore presumably not installed by OS.
2009-03-28 13:25 - TP5188 (Norwood)
Plug intact. FB painted. Showers passing. Rabbit holes.
2009-03-28 11:55 - TP3052 (Elmton)
Plug intact. Trig in hedge on S side of track. Good views to E with sunshine and showers.
2009-03-28 10:40 - TP0462 (Bolsover)
Either a small bolt or a large rivet.
2009-03-28 10:40 - TP7880 (Hillstown)
A bit of an oddity. The OS Passive Station database lists Hillstown (rivet) C1SK4869 at SK4883369771 Last visited by OS on 13/07/1993. No sketch, but links to photo at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpic/jpg/C1SK4869.jpg which seems to be dated on the print as 11 2'98 Comparing this with its replacement: Bolsover (bolt) C2SK4869 at SK4883369771 i.e. identical grid ref. Station record at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=C2SK4869 This has a date of observation: 14/03/1996 and links to sketch and also to photo at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/stationpics/jpg/C2SK4869.jpg It doesn't seem consistent for the two stations to be in the same place yet for Hillstown to have been photographed after its replacement was installed. Maybe the photos got mixed up?
2009-03-21 14:30 - TP2446 (Cote Hill)
S side of road, between hedge and elec fence. Plug missing. Hazy afternoon.
2009-03-21 11:05 - TP7222 (Forcett)
Height tag missing otherwise vgc. Sited at entrance to Forcett Hall. Revisited 2 May 2009.
2009-03-21 10:55 - TP0595 (Forcett FBM Aux 1)
Buried under thin mat of yellowing grass in front of wooden fence at edge of village.
2009-03-14 14:00 - TP4987 (Murton Pike)

2009-03-14 09:30 - TP1648 (Broad Lea)
Plug intact; three sighting holes open with the upper centre mark visible. Detour off soggy track giving a good view of the northern pennines.
2009-03-07 14:25 - TP6670 (Upton)
Field side of hedge. Minor damage to top with spider-end exposed. Plug intact. The village might show in a 'best kept' competition but the trig wouldn't.
2009-03-07 13:25 - TP6912 (Whites Wood)
Awkward scratchy hedge; plug intact. Grotty area.
2009-03-07 12:45 - TP6354 (The Belt)
Plug intact. Edge of field.
2009-03-07 09:55 - TP5101 (New Ville)
Flat and featureless - needs some hills.
New Ville site
2009-02-28 15:10 - TP4131 (Jerusalem)
Easy access. Pennines still in cloud so disappointing views. Not quite such a green and pleasant land today. Back to Appleby for train home - questioned on platform as to why my boots were so muddy - should have said that I'd just been to Jerusalem 8-)
2009-02-28 12:30 - TP3715 (Heights)
The farmer was about so I asked permission to visit - readily granted albeit with a puzzled look for making such a strange request. Trig in NE corner of field, plug replaced, views limited today.
2009-02-28 10:00 - TP6236 (Strutforth Hill)
Plug replaced; rear sighting hole open. W side of fence. Paint flaking. Light drizzle - not a good day for views.
2009-02-21 14:05 - TP5456 (Pistern Hill)
Plug intact. Overlooking farm buildings with views of Derby suburbs. Detour off path then approached on muddy track.
2009-02-21 12:40 - TP4883 (Money Hill)
Plug intact; summit of field, views limited. Approached from Ashby, path alongside the biscuit factory. Also went to have a look at the tunnel portal nearby.
2009-02-14 15:00 - TP7485 (Toton East)
I emailed the OS about this one but there was nothing that they could add regarding the type of mark, its exact location or current status. A study of the site via google maps confirms that there is no longer a signal box or similar structure at this location although the narrowness of the embankment here suggests that the Toton East Junction box might have been slightly further north. As regards the possibility of the trig station being a surface mark, google maps shows that the original track crossovers have gone and also that the ballast is clean; so I think that the balance of evidence is such a mark would have been lost when the track was replaced.
2009-02-14 14:20 - TP6578 (Trent)
Nothing of interest. Higher ground nearby.
2009-02-14 12:40 - TP5782 (Rye Hill)
Slightly conical bolt, approx 2" dia, in centre of large rough concrete block (presumably the foundations of the original trig). Overcast.
2009-02-14 11:55 - TP5693 (Risley)
Plug intact. Easy access, compact landscape.
2009-02-14 11:25 - TP5805 (Sandiacre)
Plug replaced; fading graffiti, by hedge next to footpath. Leftover snow. Looks as though someone tried to set fire to the tree stump.
2009-02-07 15:45 - TP0006 (Darlton)
Plug intact, gps plaque. Edge of field, short track from road. Wasn't expecting the gliders. Lincoln cathedral and Moon to E. Sad deserted graffiti-strewn farmhouse at roadside.

Plug intact. Pillar at field edge; good views to E. Sun gone in.
2009-02-07 13:00 - TP1691 (Brotherwood Farm)
Tarmac plug. Thin snow, clear skies - sunny but cold views.
2009-01-31 14:30 - TP0193 (Mackley)
Previously visited 2 weeks ago; found broken tiles, potato-sized pebbles and a buried brick so plenty of false-positives whilst probing but no block. Returned today and, after nearly an hour, eventually found it. Deeper than expected. If the passers-by were locals they were doubtless wondering what it all was for. At least it wasn't raining.
2009-01-31 11:30 - TP4039 (Hound Hill)
Plug intact but big chunk of concrete missing from the top, exposing one end of the spider. View of the Industrial Estate. Path from W is signposted and carries a diversion notice indicating that it continues E along a farm track. But as mickandshane noted, the gate leading from the track to road is wrapped in barbed-wire.
2009-01-24 16:20 - TP4808 (Middlefield)
Tarmac plug, otherwise vgc. Good views over the Trent valley with sun setting. Friendly horses in the adjacent field.
2009-01-24 12:45 - TP3689 (Hayton Castle)
Farmerised but not obvious why. Fragments of concrete embedded in track to S but nothing trig-shaped. Distant hazy views W, Trent valley power stations to E. Number taken from a previous visit on 17 April 1993.
2009-01-24 11:25 - TP5844 (Schrog Hill)

2009-01-24 10:50 - TP4441 (Little Gringley Farm)
Big empty field, no hedges, no trig.
2009-01-24 09:50 - TP3527 (Grove Kennels)
Easy to find. Plug intact. FB re-excavated. Seemed an odd place to site a trig but maybe they were running out of places to put them around Retford.
2009-01-24 09:15 - TP5239 (Ordsall Hill)
Plug intact. Ground churned up by cattle around pillar, elsewhere frozen mud. Elec fence alongside the drive. Trig viewed by kind permission of the farmer.
2009-01-17 14:00 - TP6658 (Upper Eaton)

2009-01-17 12:00 - TP3620 (Hare Hill)
Trig no longer in hedge. Behind electric fence adjacent to stables. Plug intact, paintwork flaking. Good views.
2009-01-10 14:10 - TP4007 (Hoon Mount)
Plug intact, two sighting holes open. Cold and grey. Footpath appears to be little used. Noisy road nearby. Rabbits have been excavating the barrow.
2009-01-10 10:55 - TP4351 (Langley Green)

Plug intact. Grey views.
2009-01-03 13:50 - TP7162 (Melbourne)
Ivy growing back
2009-01-03 13:35 - TP0461 (Melbourne Common)

2009-01-03 13:30 - TP0608 (Melbourne FBM Aux 1)
2009-01-03 12:00 - TP7879 (St Brides)
Listed in the passive station database at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=C1SK3624 No sketch or photo. Last visited by OS on 09/03/1993 with the observation date for the nearby Melbourne Common bolt (C2SK3624) given as 01/05/1998 implying that the earlier station was replaced. I looked around the NW side of the road, near to the farm entrance but,as expected, found nothing.
2009-01-03 10:35 - TP5223 (Old Manor Farm)
Big empty field, scratchy hedge, busy road. Ruins of building on E side but no concrete. OS records show pillar replaced by block which in turn was later destroyed. View of the cooling towers at Willington.
2008-12-31 15:35 - TP5916 (Sharpah)
Back again. Freezing fog - no view. Found a bedraggled wreath fixed to top with attached message "Better in the Hills than in the shops".
Sharp Haw trig
2008-12-29 12:30 - TP5811 (Sandwell Park Golf Course)
Plug intact, pillar at edge of golf course, not very busy today. Approached from E; over wall rather than risk the narrow gap beside gate. Almost a footy trig but West Brom ground not quite visible from here.
2008-12-23 12:05 - TP0239 (Grimley Hall)
Paced-in from roadside. A bit of gardening needed to find it.
Grimley Hall detail
2008-12-23 12:00 - TP7160 (Bromsgrove (R))
Good condition with height tag intact. Hard to read but 371.51 Ft, I think. Railings.
2008-12-23 11:50 - TP0619 (Bromsgrove FBM Aux 1)

Easily found but no other merits on a cold drizzly morning.
2008-12-06 14:50 - TP7056 (Woodside)
Field side of hedge; plug intact but pillar a bit shabby. Choice of gates from lane. Bikes at Oulton Park audible.
2008-12-06 13:40 - TP1883 (Calveley)
Thought this was on the S side of the road for some reason; eventually thought of trying N side. FB facing into field; plug in vgc. Muddy field but sun put in an appearance.
2008-12-06 11:40 - TP6200 (Stoke Hall)
Plug replaced, rear sighting hole open. Minor detour off very muddy footpath; trig well hidden, even in December. Wallabies in a paddock at Rease Heath College.
2008-11-29 16:45 - TP1367 (Bilton)
Houses, but saw a barn owl on the edge of the main road.
2008-11-29 15:20 - TP2992 (East Mount)
The entrance to the course didn't seem inviting so tried the route in from Western Gailes Way. Located path into wood just W of No.96 but the gate in the steel pallisade fencing was locked. Next considered the SW bank of Holderness Drain but it was steep and overgrown. The track shown on older maps has gone. Then a circuit of the golf course perimeter via North's bridge, a housing estate and back to the main road - secure fencing 8-( Finally, asked for permission at the office next to entrance. No problem - should have tried this first. Golfers ignored me and I them. Trig in a damp patch under trees, plug intact, could do with repainting.
2008-11-29 13:05 - TP4385 (Leads Bridge)
No sign of it. Apart from a holly bush, the ground cover was not dense, so would have expected to see the remains, had there been any. Site revisited 27 June 2009 whilst following a disused railway line out of Hull.
Leads Bridge site

Kirkby Stephen FBM site at dusk
2008-11-15 13:40 - TP7493 (Sails)
Sails is the southernmost 2000ft top on Mallerstang. Its slightly lower than neighbouring Little Fell with a reascent that most would consider insufficient to qualify it as a separate top. Its a wet, tussocky hill with few rock outcrops which is maybe why the OS chose a 'ring' trig station for this location. Its easy to find - at the highest point, next to a small cairn. There are good views of the surrounding hills, especially the profile of Wild Boar Fell. The station itself is waterlogged - several minutes spent in bailing had little effect. Theres a central bolt of approx 1" diameter but I couldn't make out any lettering on the concrete circumference. The station is recorded on benchmarks.ordnancesurvey.co.uk as one of several 'buried blocks' in this area so maybe there are more stations of this kind yet to be found. Acknowledgements to Phil Clayton, whose book 'On High Yorkshire Hills' (Dalesman, 1993) confirmed my suspicion that there could be a ring trig here.
2008-11-08 16:20 - TP6294 (Sydney)
OS records have it as 'Dest 10/56'. Lacking in scenery.
2008-11-08 15:05 - TP6805 (West End)

2008-09-06 14:10 - TP4957 (Mow Cop)

2008-08-16 12:15 - TP6034 (Smeaton Farm)

Blackpool Control Tower - beyond the fence
2008-08-09 16:00 - TP7258 (Blackpool)
S side of road; I think the old OS building has been demolished.

Probably also holds the record for the largest number of people gathered around a trig point :)
2008-08-09 12:30 - TP0134 (Cleveleys)
Not only is the rivet definitely missing but its former location is presently unreachable. The site is within the exclusion zone for the dismantling of the MS Riverdance which ran aground on 31 Jan 2008. Walking south along the promenade from Fleetwood to Blackpool with trams for company; persistent rain heading the other way 8-()
2008-08-09 12:30 - TP9603 (Cleveleys Clock Tower)
Didn't see a clock tower when visiting for the ex-rivet although only 53 metres separation. Checked the OS trig marks database which says 'Dest 10/83'
2008-08-09 09:30 - TP0136 (Fleetwood)
Polished rivet in sea wall. Wet and windy morning.
2008-08-02 15:00 - TP4089 (Hutton Mulgrave Moor)
Plug intact. Quiet wood, noisy road. Sunshine and showers.
2008-08-02 13:20 - TP0129 (Potato Hill)
Carefully painted; plug replaced; GPS plaque. Just through gate. Showery with thunder over Whitby.
2008-08-02 11:55 - TP7164 (Mickleby)
Inconspicuous location; a bit overgrown. Height tag is present but blank; GPS plaque but (like Flamborough) theres no 'Ordnance Survey Benchmark' plate (unless buried). Revisited 20 Sep 2008; no change.
2008-07-26 13:10 - TP4269 (Knitting Row)
Plug intact. Front and rear sighting holes open but centre mark not visible. Hazy with not much view but pleasant enough with butterflies, gorse, pond and flowers in the hedgerow.
2008-07-26 11:30 - TP5594 (Rawcliffe Moss)
Approach off footpath from west not recommended - deep and smelly ditch to cross. Better from NE over fence at corner of woodland then around field edge. Plug intact. Flat surroundings of no special interest.
2008-07-19 14:30 - TP3692 (Hazelhurst Fell)
Base undercut; one sighting hole open; tarmac plug. Limited views today.
2008-07-19 12:30 - TP3135 (Fell Top)
Dunsop Bridge to Garstang in a typical Englsh summer with intermittent showers and low cloud; just as well there was the boundary fence to follow. Very boggy in places. Trig surviving; just possibly a slight lean westwards. No view.
2008-07-12 16:30 - TP4799 (Middle Crag)
Corner of field, plug intact. Trig in good condition but footpaths very wet and churned-up by cattle. View of wind farm out in Morecambe Bay. I wondered if the bull in the next field had been put there for the benefit of the engineers working on the electricity pylons 8-)
2008-07-12 14:15 - TP5125 (Nickey Nook)
Pleasant walk along track by stream followed by a short but steep ascent from S. Plug replaced, three sighting holes open. Views good but weather dull.
2008-07-12 12:25 - TP6250 (Sullom Hill)
Approached from footpath via field edge. Plug intact; all sighting holes open with centre-mark visible. Good views to west - Blackpool tower and Morecambe Bay.
2008-07-05 16:00 - TP4366 (Lathwaite)
Access via footpath through farmyard and across an electric fence. A quick visit to the trig with thunder getting close.
2008-07-05 14:45 - TP5137 (Norbrick)
Plug intact but top breaking up slightly and surface cracks on pillar. Thunderstorms passing over the Bowland fells.
2008-07-05 12:30 - TP1795 (Burrow Heights)
Plug replaced by cover; all sighting holes open but upper centre mark not seen. In between showers with views back towards Lancaster.
2008-07-05 11:15 - TP1673 (Brookholme)
Plug missing; one sighting hole open; ground eroded about the base by cattle. Rainy views towards Heysham.
2008-06-28 14:15 - TP0700 (Mallowdale Pike)
Plug intact; gps plaque. Very overcast; Ingleborough just visible. Each trig in this pair seemed the higher when viewed from its neighbour.
2008-06-28 14:00 - TP6740 (Wards Stone)
Plug intact; grey and windy day. Sun hiding. Footpaths not too boggy despite recent rain.
2008-06-28 12:35 - TP2242 (Clougha Pike)
Painted white. Viewfinder on top of pillar has gone; presumably stolen.
2008-06-21 10:20 - TP7842 (Full Sutton South)
Would have been by side of track leading to farm buildings. Nothing found.
Full Sutton South site
2008-06-21 10:10 - TP7487 (Full Sutton North)
Full Sutton airfield was previously a Thor missile site with two 'Project Emily' trig pillars. Details, courtesy of Rod Sladen, (474218.15, 454124.23, S9874) N and (473980.5, 453740.08, S9876) S. Part of the airfield remains in use by a flying club; other buildings have been converted to a small industrial estate whilst the former trig locations are now farmland. The N trig site is near a field corner, approached from the SW following the hedgeline. The S trig site is near the corner of a track leading to farm buildings. Nothing remaining now; very flat landscape with little scenic value; some random bits of concrete and poppies at the field edge.
2008-06-21 09:00 - TP5529 (Primrose Hill)
Located on a plinth at top end of farmyard; leaning slightly. Plug replaced; paint flaking. Reasonable view to NE across fields. Viewed by permission; friendly dogs.
2008-06-14 15:30 - TP7143 (Lancaster)
Height tag missing otherwise vgc. Pleasant park. Good views from the memorial gallery but the FBM in a secluded spot. Would have thought it at risk from the mower but unmarked.
2008-06-14 15:15 - TP8028 (Ashton Memorial)
Retrospective log added when this appeared on the Trigpointing list. Intersected point; visited along with the FBM. Thought the monument looked better from a distance than from close-up.
2008-06-14 15:00 - TP0598 (Lancaster FBM Aux 1)
Buried in roadside vegetation but not too difficult.
2008-06-14 14:00 - TP6823 (West View)
Plug missing. Good views, especially towards Clougha Pike. Rain finally moving away as per the forecast.
2008-06-14 11:20 - TP6873 (Whit Moor)
Plug intact, two sighting holes open. Cotton grass, drizzly. Views of Heysham, Morecambe Bay and Wind Farm one way with Yorkshire Three Peaks t'other.
2008-06-07 14:15 - TP1364 (Billings Hill)
No trig. Sneaked a look over the hedge of the nearby house in case it had become a garden ornament, but nothing seen.
2008-06-07 12:20 - TP0361 (Low Skirlington)
Buried in the neatly-maintained verge. Location as per the OS sketch, measuring from the twisted trunk of the young (oak?) tree and from the road edge. Unusual (non-OS) ground marker on same verge opposite depot entrance.
2008-06-07 11:20 - TP4907 (Moor Hill)
OS database states that this one was destroyed 06/60; also gives a computation year for nearby Skirlington as 1959 which implies that the two trigs co-existed for a short while with a separation of approx 47m.
Moor Hill Fragment of an eroded building on beach. Trig would have been about here but at cliff-top level.
2008-06-07 11:10 - TP7130 (Skirlington)
Approached along beach from Hornsea then a scramble up the crumbly cliff. Plug replaced. Pillar seems safe for the moment. View of the caravan park.
2008-05-31 15:15 - TP7847 (Catfoss North)
Site visited along with Catfoss South. No sign of either.
Catfoss North site
2008-05-31 15:10 - TP7484 (Catfoss South)
RAF Catfoss became a Thor missile site but has long been adapted to other uses. The northern part of the airfield is currently a storage depot whilst the southern end is the location for several very large farm sheds (chicken-rearing?) but seemingly empty at the moment. The location of the two former MOD 'Project Emily' trig pillars, courtesy of Rod Sladen, were (513604.07,448410.61) N and (513583.47,448013.14) S. The main runway is aligned approx N-S with the pillar sites just off the eastern edge. This can be approached from the S via a small detour off a public bridleway (itself diverted along part of the airfield's perimiter track). But theres nothing of interest in the field where the trigs once were. A few fragments of concrete found but could have been anything.
2008-05-31 13:00 - TP3785 (High Emmotland)
Plug not checked. Minor scuff marks on pillar. An uncared-for trig in the farmyard, used as a prop for implements and clutter. No worthwhile views.
2008-05-31 11:10 - TP1028 (Barf Hill)
Plug replaced; back sighting-hole open. Fidgety cattle kept their distance. Convenient gate from roadside to N. A hill relative to its flat surroundings. One of several Barf/Barff hills - a dictionary search suggests that its a variant of 'Barugh' or 'Barrow'.
2008-05-24 14:45 - TP1697 (Brow Top)
Plug intact; memorial plaque. Coastal views from Whitby Abbey, Robin Hoods Bay to Ravenscar.
2008-05-24 11:45 - TP0130 (Ravenscar)
Low FB number. Plug replaced, GPS plaque, pillar painted white. Good views towards Scarborough Castle. Also tried to bag the elusive grid ref OV000000 but unable to find a safe way down from the cliff top.
2008-05-17 16:40 - TP3944 (Hinderwell Beacon)
Plug intact; gorse not too difficult. Easy approach by edge of field. Good views towards Staithes and seawards. The adjacent ROC post has the lid missing and entrance shaft filled-in.
2008-05-17 15:10 - TP5123 (Newton Mulgrave Moor)
Plug intact. Sea views but a lack of sunshine.
2008-05-17 12:40 - TP5988 (Siss Cross)
Plug intact, three sighting-holes open. Good views for a drizzly day. Motorbikes encountered on track to N.
2008-05-17 11:25 - TP3812 (High Waupley Farm)
Plug intact. Flaking paintwork. Located in corner of field with barbed-wire fence. Raining again. The footpaths appear to be little used.
2008-05-10 14:15 - TP3964 (Hograh Moor)
Plug intact; one sighting-hole open. Pathless plod from the west; not visible until almost reached. Views to N including Cook monument, Roseberry Topping, Eston Hill and Guisborough Moor. Heard a cuckoo whilst descending through woods to NW - first time this year.
2008-05-10 11:05 - TP2035 (Castle House Farm)
Plug replaced otherwise vgc. Warm morning, v. hazy. No castles.
2008-05-05 11:20 - TP6440 (Thirkleby Wold)
Plug intact; one sighting hole open. At side of track with fields painted yellow.
2008-05-05 09:50 - TP3771 (High Barn)
Plug intact; FB buried in hedge but accessible. Not much view. Permission to visit readily given at farm.
2008-05-03 17:00 - TP0458 (Saltburn 2)
More rivet than bolt. Concrete block at end of crash barrier. The OS passive station record for its predecessor C1NZ6721 still exists but would appear to have been within a field.
2008-05-03 16:50 - TP7876 (Saltburn)
The OS Passive Station record at http://gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/viewpassiverec1.asp?recnumber=C1NZ6721 describes this as a surface block at NZ675215. Theres no more precise location, observation date or coordinate check date given and I couldn't find an associated sketch or photo. The location is within a field rather than the more usual roadside habitat of surface blocks. Site viewed from a distance whilst checking Saltburn 2 (C2NZ6721). The latter has an observation date of 1999 and I'd assume it replaced the original Saltburn station.
Saltburn presumed location
2008-05-03 16:15 - TP6756 (Warsett Hill)
Plug intact; one sighting hole open. Access land with views along the coast over Saltburn and Redcar. Breezy.
2008-05-03 13:35 - TP2961 (Easington)
Painted white including the FB; plug replaced by cover. One sighting hole open. Short detour off footpath. Hazy out to sea; better views inland.
2008-05-03 13:05 - TP7481 (Loftus)
Active Station LOFT as per the OS database. Located within Loftus Weather Station; S side of minor road. The usual dome on a metal pole.
2008-05-03 10:45 - TP4557 (Low House Farm)
Plug intact; N side of track just to E of top. Hazy dozy day. View of pyramids.
2008-04-26 13:10 - TP3760 (Hibaldstow)
Plug intact; FB facing N. Hedge trig with limited views although it was interesting to watch the parachutists.
2008-04-26 12:05 - TP7784 (Hibaldstow (1914))
Noticed that this had recently appeared as a 'user added' record so adding a retrospective log. The site is under the busy A15, close to a footpath sign. FBM presumably lost when the road was raised to cross the railway line by a bridge instead of the level crossing. Not found in OS passive station list; replacement is H1SE9401.
Hibaldstow (1914) site
2008-04-26 11:20 - TP0602 (Hibaldstow (1987) FBM Aux 1)
No OS sketch. Took about 45 minutes to find this 8-( Eventually located approx 10ft from the Hawthorn bush.
2008-04-26 10:25 - TP7247 (Hibaldstow)
Just inside the fence. Height tag missing. Compound appears to be used for dog training. Also visited the original site of the FBM, now buried under the A15.
2008-04-26 10:20 - TP0168 (Cleatham)
Easy but unimpressive. Decent view.
2008-04-19 14:40 - TP7973 (Normanby Gasholder)
OS trig marks database lists this as 'Dest 01/63'. The site is now an industrial park. Passed within ~100 yds when visiting Flush Bracket G2460. No Gasholder seen; confirmed by aerial view.
Normanby Gasholder - aerial view of site
2008-04-19 11:35 - TP0813 (Alkborough)
Plug intact; FB number is the 3rd lowest on pillars, I think. Located at corner of track with views of the Humber estuary and bridge.
2008-04-12 15:00 - TP5827 (Saxby Wold)
Destroyed 04/63 and replaced by a buried block according to the OS. Had a snoop round the reservoir but nothing found. Good views anyway.
Saxby Wold view through the reservoir fence
2008-04-12 13:10 - TP2753 (Deepdale)
Plug intact; in gappy hedge at corner of field next to bird-scarer. Passing hail shower so not much view. Flare stacks to SE - maybe South Killingholme
2008-04-12 11:45 - TP6623 (Twenty Two Acre)
Checked the hedgerows in case it had been moved, but no sign of it. Good views across the Humber Estuary from the hilltop. Humber bridge built 1973-1981; trig removed Feb 1979 - so it may well have helped in surveying the construction which ultimately led to its demise - theres gratitude!
Twenty Two Acre Hedge of N side of road
2008-04-12 10:55 - TP0357 (Barton Waterside)
Interred but a good walk across the bridge.
Barton Waterside view from the bridge
2008-04-05 15:45 - TP5196 (Nunthorpe Resr)
Tarmac plug. Good views over Teesside. An interesting one.
2008-04-05 14:25 - TP3078 (Eston Beacon)
Very windy. Trig and monument covered with graffiti. A popular viewpoint and rubbish tip 8()
2008-04-05 12:10 - TP3067 (Errington Wood)
Slight damage to top with fading graffiti. Plug intact; puzzled over the cuts on the spider (see photo)- evidently made with the plug removed. Most likely made by placing the tribrach heavily onto the top of the pillar - probably not in the approved OS manner 8-) Views along the coast from Saltburn, Tees and towards Hartlepool, also Redcar and Billingham with Roseberry Topping in the opposite direction.
2008-04-05 10:40 - TP0802 (Airy Hill)
N side of hedge, just off the Cleveland Way. Plug intact. Wet and windy morning.
2008-03-29 12:10 - TP4096 (Idle Stop)
N bank of river. Plug intact, FB dug out. Windy with rain approaching.
2008-03-29 09:45 - TP0203 (Gringley)
More of a bolt than a rivet. Views wide and flat.
2008-03-25 14:35 - TP4411 (Lickey Hill)
One sighting hole open. Exposed concrete plinth. Plug missing - broken shards scattered on ground. TS=JD inscribed on the spider. Located below hilltop so views one-sided over Longbridge and towards Birmingham city centre. Good condition considering its urban location.
2008-03-20 12:00 - TP1249 (Bells Lane)
Plug intact albeit slightly battered. No graffiti. Views of pylons and tower blocks.
2008-03-20 10:15 - TP2325 (Cofton Common)
Plug intact, slight damage to top. Views OK to S over reservoirs but immediate surroundings nothing special. Approached from E - easy detour from footpath.
2008-03-15 16:15 - TP0358 (Weel)
The marker posts have gone but the alignment with the N face of the factory across the river provides a reliable means of locating this. The bolt head is conical rather than the usual hemispherical shape. Muddy verge on a grey day.
2008-03-15 13:30 - TP6706 (Walkington)
Plug intact. Paint flaking. Rubbish strewn along the verge. Dull trig, dull day.
2008-03-15 10:00 - TP7476 (Swanland)
Active station SWAN in OS database. Water Tower at W end of village. Station is on tower roof, bolted to the railings on the S side. Not visible from road but easy access into adjacent field. Drizzly day - views of nothing.
2008-03-08 15:20 - TP0709 (Cave Wold)
Disappointing for a primary. Plug replaced by plastic cover, surface flaking off in several places and a big chunk missing from the top - agriculturally battered maybe. Staples (?) embedded in two faces. Views of the Humber Estuary with top of bridge just visible. Ominous rain clouds approaching. Back to Brough for train (full of happy Hull City fans - their team had just beaten nearby Scunthorpe 2-0)
2008-03-08 13:55 - TP3789 (High Hunsley)
Hedge trig. Slight separation at top of pillar. Last digit of FB is damaged. Detour from Wolds Way; better views from road.
2008-03-08 12:00 - TP4033 (Hotham Hill)
Plug intact. Rabbits have been busy excavating around the base. Views dominated by Drax Power Station.
2008-03-08 10:25 - TP7211 (South Cave)
Easily spotted. Usual GPS plaque. Height tag 104.05ft.
2008-03-08 10:15 - TP0167 (North Cave)
Worn nail found at roadside then paced in. Much easier to find than the neighbouring marker. Big bolt.
2008-03-08 10:00 - TP0601 (South Cave FBM Aux 1)
Station record is at H1SE9132 but this seems to correspond to the sketch at H2SE9031. Using the sketch, I probed along a line offset from the road by 4.50m and at the correct location eventually found a Berntsen hidden under soil, grass, roots and stones. Would guess this replaced the original bolt.
2008-03-01 14:10 - TP6048 (Sober Hill)
Plug replaced by cover; pillar painted white, including the FB. Alongside track on the Wolds Way. Extensive view towards the Humber estuary.
2008-03-01 13:10 - TP6789 (Weighton Wold)
Plug replaced, rear sighting hole open. Close to road, masts and an ROC post. Unusually, the lid of the post was open. Windy Wolds.
2008-03-01 10:30 - TP4813 (Middleton Wold)
Plug replaced. Within easy reach from road but sharp hedge trimmings made for uncomfortable access through to the bracket. Stupidly fast traffic on road with assorted squashed wildlife along the verge including pheasants, rat, stoat, badger and a deer 8-()
2008-02-23 13:15 - TP3164 (Fimberfields)
Up bridleway from Fimber (interesting milestone at roadside). Then approached from NE along hedgerow. Pillar at junction of field boundaries. Plug replaced, all sighting holes closed. Quiet windy grey day.
2008-02-23 10:45 - TP3683 (Hawold)
Plug replaced by tarmac, three sighting-holes open. Approached from footpath, along hedge and then a short distance into the next field. Not much view on a grey day.
2008-02-16 14:30 - TP6477 (Tibthorpe)
Plug replaced, FB facing W. Hedge trig, hazy afternoon with the moon shining.
2008-02-16 12:30 - TP7473 (Driffield West)
One of a pair constructed on this site for the MOD - Project Emily. Original locations (courtesy of Rod S) SE992573 (E) and SE988570 (W). No sign of the E trig - location is now in a plantation on the northern edge of the former Driffield airfield. The W trig's location would originally have been in a field, just to the W of the airfield. The pillar, complete with foundations, has been moved approx 100m N and dumped on the E side of a hedge, a short distance S of the plantation. Plug missing, minor damage to the top, one sighting hole open (facing hedge). No FB or recess on any of the three accessible faces. Some other odd-shaped bits of concrete nearby but nothing recognisable. Site approached from N via a very wet track and over a heap of rubble which blocks a gap in the hedge. The airfield now appears to be used for various off-road activities. I assume that this is the trig referred to be 'trig-bagger' in an email to the trigonomy list 18 Jan 2007 which mentions "a toppled trig pillar that lays abandoned on a military training area".
Driffield West View from original site
2008-02-16 11:15 - TP0356 (Driffield)
Easy surface block - obvious hollow in front of fence as per the OS sketch; minor excavation.
2008-02-09 15:20 - TP3534 (Guisborough Moor)
Plug missing, one sighting hole open. Faded graffiti. Extensive but hazy views; a peaceful contrast after Roseberry T. Could hear the slightly surreal sound of ice-cream van chimes in the far distance. Section of path down through wood badly churned-up by logging.
2008-02-09 13:55 - TP5734 (Roseberry Topping)
Plug filling broken through. Pillar spoiled by juvenile graffiti. Busy top with contrasting views of Teesside industry, the sea and the North York moors.
2008-02-09 11:20 - TP0127 (Newby Grange)
A marker nail in the centre of the road as per the sketch makes this one easy. Block under a shallow covering of grass.
2008-02-09 10:35 - TP5104 (Newby)
Plug intact, corner of an empty field.
2008-02-02 13:05 - TP6927 (Whorlton Moor)
Plug missing. BM on the adjacent post. Snow showers passing over.
2008-02-02 10:20 - TP6890 (White House)
Plug missing; FB on W side; easy access from the road.
2008-02-02 08:45 - TP5606 (Red Hall Farm)
Tarmac plug; roadside. View of moors and pylons. Frosty morning.
2008-01-26 15:00 - TP5108 (Newcoat Fields)
Simple access. Three trees trig tump.
2008-01-26 13:35 - TP4047 (Huggate Wold)
Hedge trig, plug replaced by cover. FB facing SW. Windy day.
2008-01-19 11:25 - TP3589 (Hamilton Hill)
Plug intact, paint flaking. Low hill with good views towards Brid and Flamborough Head. Several Foot and Mouth notices in the nearby village.
2008-01-12 12:15 - TP4555 (Low Caythorpe)
Plug replaced; rear sighting hole open. In tall but gappy hedge, FB facing E. Approached from E via track alongside hedge, watching a fox retreat across the fields.
2008-01-06 15:00 - TP1898 (Canada)
Plug intact, paint flaking. Trig on top of mound in a narrow belt of woodland; no undergrowth so easily found. The last trig on an afternoon tour between Flamborough and Sledmere - thanks to IRM for the driving.
2008-01-06 14:45 - TP2355 (Collingwood)
Plug intact. Behind a small reservoir next to wood. Easy access. Another muddy field. Revisited 5 May 2008 -not so muddy.
2008-01-06 14:30 - TP5211 (Octon)
The FB number implies a relatively late addition. Just off the road; field side of a narrow strip of brambly woodland. Older OS maps show a footpath; gate posts at roadside opposite mast; path evidently diverted. The FB was part-buried; plug replaced, concrete discoloured. A bit below average. Revisted 26 May 2008 11:10 - no change.
2008-01-06 14:15 - TP6839 (Westfield)
Hedge trig; muddy field. E side of hedge, FB facing E. Nothing special. Revisited 26 May 2008 12:40; no change apart from less mud and more hedge.
2008-01-06 14:00 - TP5770 (Rudston Beacon)
Probably was on a field boundary, a trace of which remains. Good views but no trig. A previous visit on 2 July 1995 and was not there then. Number was S6370 in OS records. Site revisited 26 May 2008 14:15.
2008-01-06 13:40 - TP1343 (Bessingby)
Gap in hedge at field junction, not far off track. Some slight graffiti on FB and top. A bright January afternoon. Passing by again on 12 January so revisited.
2008-01-06 13:10 - TP7828 (Carnaby South)
Site visit with RHW and IRM. No sign of any pillar remains.
Carnaby South site
2008-01-06 13:00 - TP7418 (Carnaby North)
Constructed for MOD - Project Emily. Just beyond W edge of the Industrial Estate. Gone. Bits of concrete about but nothing of trig significance. Location is now a big open field. New perimeter fence under construction. Former location of Carnaby South also visited; at side of track, slightly higher location than the other of this pair but similarly no sign of it.
2008-01-06 12:15 - TP5836 (Scarborough Road Resr)
A close inspection of the fence on a sunny morning. Trig in good condition.
2008-01-06 10:45 - TP0648 (Flamborough FBM Aux 1)
Passive station H2TA2270; photo (but no sketch) in the OS passive station database. Not found on 24 Nov and 9 Dec 2007. The OS photo had a discouraging lack of detail. Location N of two open gateways opposite the allotments entrance. Soft ground but rubble just under the surface so prodding gave false positives. Forgot to check for roadside nails or paint markers. Found on 3rd visit with IRM's help. A bit further from the road edge than where I'd previously looked.
2008-01-06 10:15 - TP7219 (Flamborough)
Third time lucky! Previous attempts 24 November and 8 December 2007. Grid ref indicated a triangular region bounded by Carter Lane, Castle Crescent and Bempton Lane. Wooden fence, approx 6ft high, on Carter Lane with houses around the rest of the perimiter with no obvious access to the interior. Glimpse over fence implied a sharp drop - designated on www.old-maps.co.uk as 'old chalk pit'. OS passive station H1TA2270 includes a sketch but no photo. Spot heights on map indicated that the FBM was approx 3m below the surrounding level. Subsequent research, with much help from members of Trigonomy and the OS, established that the site owner was at 8 Carter Lane from whom permission to visit was obtained. Visited on a bright Sunday morning along with IRM, RHW and RH. The FBM was part-buried, usual GPS plaque but no benchmark plate (possibly it was buried and we didn't dig deep enough). No railings; concrete discoloured, but FBM otherwise in good condition. Height tag present but blank. Chalk pit converted to a secluded garden. Rod Sladen has since suggested that the benchmark plate would probably be on the FBM face closest to the height tag - that might be something for the next visitor to check.
2008-01-06 08:55 - TP6078 (South Wold)
Roadside reservoir compound; easy access via gate. Plug filled-in. Revisited 26 January as forgot to bag the county top on first occasion. Interesting war memorial across the road which records the sad demise of the milkman.

2007-12-15 11:50 - TP7465 (Giggleswick)
Active station GIGG in the OS active station database. Simpler than most - in a small reservoir, N side of minor road at top of bank, approx 1 mile NW of Giggleswick. Good view of quarry and the surrounding fells.
2007-12-08 13:55 - TP8769 (Flamborough Lighthouse)
2007-12-08 13:45 - TP3194 (Flamborough)

2007-12-08 13:45 - TP7270 (Flamborough Head 2)

2007-12-01 10:00 - TP2151 (Chevinside)
Corner of field by broken-down wall. Brambles cleared but FB part-buried. Plug intact. Good views across valley. Presumably this location has better sight-lines from the town compared to the hill top. Friendly farmer.
2007-11-24 14:05 - TP0362 (Sixpenny Hill)
Confusing site with assorted signs, posts and covers on the OS sketch. Eventually found approx mid-way between the SV post '100/SV/3' and the 'Give Way' sign. Revisited 6 Jan 2008 - easy when you know where to look.
2007-11-24 12:45 - TP1480 (Blakehowe)
Plug intact. Pillar in vgc (no scrape marks) in its midfield position. A permissive path goes around the field edge. Grey skies with rain approaching. A very sleek rat was eating the food put out for the birds at the RSPB visitor centre.

Plug filled-in; FB facing inland; one sighting-hole open, paint flaking, gps plaque. The plaque appears slightly skew relative to the bracket. Pillar close to cliff edge but seems stable.
2007-11-17 14:30 - TP2628 (Crow Wood Farm)
In hedge on S side of narrow and busy road. FB facing outwards. Flaking paintwork. Top damaged - presumably an encounter with a hedge trimmer. Plastic plug cover. Revisited 14 Feb 2009 - scuffed but surviving.

2007-10-13 10:00 - TP5781 (Rye)
Didn't venture into the field but its newly planted and so nothing to obstruct the view. Even if toppled, the trig should have been visible but there was no sign of it, the hump it was relocated to, or the original field edge. I checked from the E end of the farm drive, from the roadside and from the track on the N edge of the present boundary - just a big open field. So it appears to have been either destroyed or moved again at some point since the previous visit 2 years ago 8-( Trig symbol still shown on current OS 1:50000 and 1:25000. Geograph has a photo of the trig dated 4 July 2006 so that narrows down the date somewhat.
2007-10-06 15:45 - TP1080 (Batemans Plantation)
Plug intact, one sighting hole open, plinth. Flattish top; track up from farm buildings leads most of the way there. Reservoir in distance.

2007-09-30 15:50 - TP7458 (Hoober)
OS Active Station HOOB on the E side of Hoober Reservoir. It has the usual waterworks security - steel pallisade fencing. The station is on the roof of a small building and is visible through the fence from the road junction to S. A slightly closer view obtained from the E side. The monuments just up the road (Hoober Stand and 'The Eye of the Needle') are worth a visit.
2007-09-30 15:00 - TP5595 (Rawmarsh Resr)
Revisited. Fence on road and field sides intact but small gap on the NW side next to bush. Bit of a squeeze to get through. Plug intact, all sighting holes open. Paint flaking. Decent views.
2007-09-29 13:30 - TP4902 (Moor Farm)
Near end of road leading to peatworks. Plug intact, leaning, surface cracks. Approached from Crowle, following in part the route of the former railway. Lack of contours hereabouts - views of Drax, Goole church spire and towards Scunthorpe.
2007-09-29 11:55 - TP7713 (Crowle Water Tower)
Prominent water tower on a hill top. Site entrance to S but approached from SW via cemetery, thence from NE corner into open fields and then E along field boundary. The tower is surrounded by a low fence, immediately adjacent to and very visible from the back gardens of neighbouring houses. Microwave transmitters on the tower side. The mark type is a bolt but no sketch or photo is available. On Landranger 112, the tower is located on a 20m contour line whilst the station record gives a height of 30.672m so the bolt is probably located on the roof. The absence of Last Visit, Observation and Coordinate check dates imply that the station was never used. The OS Trig Marks database for km square SE7713 lists a bolt with order 2 and the remark 'HELD FIXED NCE ADJ. TWR RESURFACED 29/06/92'. But it isn't clear if the resurfacing meant that the bolt was destroyed. Coords differ from the passive station by approx 0.03m; the difference is consistent with the OS statement "It is expected that agreement between ETRS89/OSTN02 derived coordinates and the original archive coordinates of triangulation stations (down to third order) will be at the 0.10 metre root mean square (r.m.s) level." In terms of position, it is therefore possible that the passive station and trig marks station are the same item. Alternatively, if the resurfacing remark indicates that the original trig mark was lost then the passive station was a replacement. Another possibility is that the Godnow surface block (CESE7511) recorded in the passive station for 1999 at approx 2.4Km from the Water Tower is a replacement. Without access to further information, the current status of this is indeterminate.
2007-09-29 11:20 - TP0162 (Godnow Bridge)
Typical of its kind. Wouldn't have found it without the roadside nail.
2007-09-29 09:55 - TP5810 (Sandtoft)
Plug intact with raised lettering. Approached from S past farm bldgs and house. No view.
2007-09-22 14:20 - TP4037 (Hough Park)
Plug intact; edge of woodland. Easy detour off footpath to gate at E end of dense hedge. No view from trig. Adjacent field occupied by a flock of noisy, but friendly, goats.
2007-09-22 12:20 - TP6409 (The Mountain)
Tarmac plug; all sighting holes open but centre-mark not visible. Top damaged, small chip out of one side. Base slightly undercut and could get significantly worse. Rusty notices not legible - perhaps just as well. Moderate views, hazy.
2007-09-22 11:05 - TP2369 (Common Farm)
Plug intact; hidden from road but not too difficult - gap in hedge still there. Careless car drivers a bigger problem.
2007-09-22 09:50 - TP1576 (Brailsford)

2007-07-21 11:15 - TP0164 (Acklam Wold)
Took rather longer than expected to locate this. Verge overgrown, dense hedgerow, wet greenery. Paint marks have faded away. A single nail at the edge of the road is misleading - look for a pair of similar nails about 7 ft further along. The block is then on a line between these and a large fence-post. Shallow covering of soil and grass. Rain slowly clearing with improving views over the Vale of York.
2007-07-21 10:35 - TP0707 (Leavening Brow)

2007-07-07 16:30 - TP7437 (Leek)
This is an active station as described on gps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/active.asp The station is located on the SW side of a minor road between Thorncliffe and Blackshaw Moor. Its in a secure fenced enclosure next to Thorncliffe reservoir and is easily visible from the road. One unusual feature is that, instead of being located on the roof of a building, the device is on the top of a tall metal tripod.

2007-06-23 08:15 - TP0512 (Kirkby Stephen (1976))
Rod Sladen identified the site of the original (1912) Kirkby Stephen FBM as NY75830626 and described it as "destroyed 1976; replaced by new FBM Kirkby Stephen (1976)". The original location fits much better with the line of wall brackets north from the Moorcock Inn. Site visited and, as expected, nothing found. Presumably lost to road improvements. The rebuilt FBM appears to have used the original plaque.

2007-05-28 14:45 - TP6488 (Tingley Hall)
Revisited whilst looking for remains of Tingley Hall (it had a wall bracket but was demolished in 1967). Trig pillar now much easier to access but that could change if the open ground is built over. See www.leodis.net for some pictures of Tingley's industrial past.
2007-05-26 15:25 - TP6017 (Sleights Moor)
Hole broken through plug replacement. Nice view of Whitby Abbey and the sea.
2007-05-26 13:15 - TP4552 (Louven Howe)
Plug intact, one sighting-hole open. Views ancient and modern. Thanks to previous loggers for flagging the other 'trig'. Resembling an upturned drainpipe, the station is approx 48" high, 26" top diameter (including pipe thickness of approx 1" each side). There are four vertical cracks extending the full height of the pillar. No sighting/drainage holes so possibly the damage was caused by water seeping into the interior then freezing. Theres a standard OS spider; the plug is 3.5" diameter with a centre-punch mark, no lettering. Suspect the plug isn't meant to be removed and that there is no centre pipe. No evidence that there was ever a flush bracket. The pillar is on a square concrete base and presumably has some connection with the construction of Fylingdales Early Warning station. Sightlines from the nearby trig may have been obscured by the tumulus necessitating the construction of this oddity?
2007-05-26 13:15 - TP7930 (Louven Howe Aux 1)
Visited at same time as the nearby proper trig pillar.
2007-05-26 11:30 - TP5982 (Simon Howe)
Plug replaced by cover; one sighting-hole open. Distant views towards Bilsdale and good middle-distance views in most other directions. Easy access from Eller Beck bridge.

Spent 45 minutes measuring, prodding and digging but without any result. Not sure why this one should be proving difficult; the measurement from the gatepost is straightforward and, apart from the surface vegn, the ground is soft for digging. Buried stones giving false positives. Nothing found other than some buried twine. Passing traffic must have wondered what was of interest. As IRM says, a spade would help if anyone wants to have a go at this one. I emailed the OS about this surface block and they kindly replied as follows: "I have spoken to our Geodetic Team who have informed me that one of our surveyors visited the site in question on 6 April 2006 but could not find the point in question. It states in the file that the surveyor did not wish to destroy the mark as he could see no signs of major ground movement. He believed that with the set of co-ordinates and the GPS kit in 'Setting Out' mode we should be able to find it. As a result the next time we are in the area we will do a search and either destroy or find and re-describe the station." - I find it reassuring the OS can have difficulty in finding their own markers 8-)
2007-05-12 12:50 - TP4386 (Leaf Howe)
Hidden in the woods but not too difficult to find. From the foundations of the former fire tower, a soft track leads to a fallen tree from where the trig is visible. Plug replaced by plastic cover, flaking paint, no view.
2007-05-12 10:15 - TP4017 (Horcum)
E side of fence. Plug replaced; top surface lifting slightly. Tussocky with cotton grass. View? of Fylingdales - the golf balls were more interesting.
2007-05-07 15:20 - TP5481 (Pockley)

2007-05-07 13:55 - TP6004 (Skiplam)
