No plug. Public. Access Land. Prominent hill north east of Pentrefoelas. Highest point on wide moor overlooking Alwen reservoir. Quite a job to reach it across heather & tussock grass. But an interesting summit, with trig, cairns & sheep shelter.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Just on private land, but can be reached from the north across Access Land [heather]. Easy to cross fence by trig, located in small circle of stones. Walk from Cerrigydrudion by steep, narrow lane & good track.
Top damaged. Metal plug [raised letters]. Trig well hidden in private forest [UPM Tilhill], but easily [& painlessly] found by following Glaslyn\'s instructions below - these are precise & accurate [except rope now gone]. Amazing place.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Approached from south west, coming out of Clocaenog Forest. Heath with lots of heather, so bit of a yomp to trig, which is now completely dominated by the adjacent wind farm.
No plug. One side of hill Accesss Land, other side private. Trig just on private side of dividing wall. Easily walkable from Nebo. Follow clear track [signed \"private road\"] as it twists & turns up the hill. Alternatively, handrail wall on public side - gate at top gives access to trig.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private, although not obviously on land of nearby property Lletty\'r Eos. Trig on very modest rise north west of minor road. Reached via 2 unlocked gates. Fenced behind, but FB faces road. Good public footpath from Llansannan.
No plug. Large crack on one side of pillar [see photo]. Base also cracked. Private [owner unknown]. Modest rise above minor road junction on east side, from where trig easily reached by way of 3 gates. The usual sheep pasture. Just off Clwydian Way.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private [owner unknown]. Unobtrusive green hill, not rising much above surrounding countryside. Dash for trig from lane on north west side - 2 early fences [barbed wire, so bit tricky], then across open sheep pasture to top [not far]. OS map gives name as Mynydd Llanelian.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private [owner unknown - several farms round foot of hill]. Walk from Betws-yn-Rhos. M&S 2004 advice still good - ascend from 298m spot height on RoW on west side. Just 2 gates to cross before trig. Higher than Moelfre Isaf, less impressive profile, but summit has wilder, remoter feel.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. RoW from lane on north side, straight up to summit & trig. Prominent round hill dominates the landscape for many miles around. Has the usual Welsh sheep & gorse. Feasible walk from Abergele, via the hospital.
Asphalt plug. Private [owner unknown - no farm called Prenol]. Easy access through unlocked gate at top of steep lane. No livestock in field. Trig on rough summit of gorse & bilberry, high above wide sweep of River Conwy. Near Bodnant Garden [National Trust].
No plug. Private [? in view of name, Garth-iwrch Farm, to north]. No sign of an access path, but trig easily reached from narrow lane on west side, via 2 unlocked gates & 1 fence [easy step-over]. Modest hill, top used for growing kale rather than usual pasture. Overlooks River Conwy.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. From crossroads south of Eglwysbach, walk up access road to Ty Nant Farm - this continues as RoW up to Ty-mawr Farm [probable owner], from where an excellent track [not RoW, but marked on 1:25 map] ascends the hill. Trig up to right, across open sheep pasture, atop prominent mound [OS map \'tumulus\']. Highest point on east side of Conwy Valley - a big hill beneath a big sky.
Top corners damaged. No plug [but remains of asphalt]. Public. Access Land. SSSI. Site entered from north [Terfyn]. Steep ascent through old quarry, then follow path along edge of wood. Trig just in front of trees at summit of this impressive hill. Wall just before reaching it is broken down & easily crossed.
Top corners damaged. No plug. Private, as in overgrown [brambly] reservoir compound within publically accessible Mynydd Marian Nature Reserve. Perimeter fence of green railings much less high than anticipated, & easily climbed [both in & out] over gate at north west corner.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private. Cefn-y-ffynnon Farm. Sheep pasture. Easiest access is via gate from public footpath to farm on south side. Stealthier access from lane [Groes Road], but means negotiating barbed wire.
No plug. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve. Entrance points from Dinerth & Rhos roads. Steep hill. Lower slopes heavily wooded, with network of paths. On reaching open ground higher up, follow waymarks for \'summit trail\' & trig soon reached.
Stone pillar showing a little damage. No plug. No FB. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. The Rhinogs present the most awesome & magical mountain experience in Snowdonia. Circular walk from the east, through the forest. Tremendous climb to summit from Bwlch Drws Ardudwy - steep, rough, not for the faint hearted. Then over & down via lovely Llyn Du. Keep to paths & avoid wandering into infamously tough Rhinog heather. One of the great mountain trigs, on one of the finest summits in Wales. My 30th & last Merionethshire trig pillar.
Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Hill overlooks Tegid & Celyn lakes. Neat lawn summit with cairn, trig & boundary stone. Approached from the south, up Cwm Da [path not always distinct]. Better descent route over Moel Darren & down Nant Cefn-coch [clear track].
John Nuttall\'s drawing shows this to have been a concrete pillar. The Nuttalls give information about its demise on page 113 of their book. The \"neat wall shelter\" is welcome, but no compensation for the loss of the trig. Good, easy walk along the North Berwyn Way, along clear paths & tracks, starting from Cynwyd & descending into Llidiart-y-Parc. Public. Access Land. Berwyn Mntns.
Chunky stone pillar definitely showing some damage. Slightly odd shape may give the impression of leaning. Some graffiti etched on pillar & spider. No plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Easy to reach from the south [Rhydymain] by following the steep lane to its end & then continuing along the forest road to the col. From there, a steep & not always distinct path goes up left, basically following the wall & fence, to a wide, grassy summit. A real mountain trig on one of Wales\'s most underrated mountains.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private [although not clear which of the farms round the bottom of the hill owns the summit]. In upper Clwyd valley, west of Gwyddelwern. Easily taken from the lane on the south side, by going up through the little wood & then proceeding up the dip slope. Only 2 fences to hop before reaching the trig. Sheep pasture. Lots of bracken & thistles, but as they say in these parts, \"dim problem!\".
Stone pillar still in good shape. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Longish walk in from Llandrillo, along quiet lane becoming good track. Then heathery slog up Foel Cwm Sian Llwyd. But trig located on pleasant summit - extensive & green.
Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Superb mountain - huge, grassy & aloof. Excellent circular walk from Pont Rhyd-y-fen - up via Llyn Arenig Fawr, down other side of Craig y Hyrddod. Good paths all the way & never really steep. A great mountain trig next to a moving war memorial. Thanks to Martin & Ken for the transport & company for this one.
Stone pillar, severely damaged on one side. No plug. FB missing. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Excellent route through forest from Pantperthog, along clear, wide track. Ascent onto Tarren ridge then steep, handrailing fences to trig. A real mountain trig.
Neat stone pillar [mostly slate]. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Route from Aberllefenni, following clear, wide track through Dyfi Forest, then ascent to trig by steep, rutted bikers\' track.
Metal plug [raised letters]. On private land belonging to Ty-mawr Farm. Permissive access to nearby Porth Iago cove & may be no objection to walking over to trig. Field gate unlocked, field itself bit on scruffy side [no livestock, but has clearly hosted cattle]. Redeemed by a backdrop of the sea. My 45th & last Caernarfonshire trig pillar.
Neat stone pillar. No plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Route from Carnedd Y Filiast, following county boundary fence. Horribly heathery final approach & ascent. But then a wonderful summit - aery, stony plateau. A real mountain trig [a.k.a. Arenig Fach].
Sturdy stone pillar inside stone shelter. No plug. FB missing. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Surprisingly good approach from the north west [Ysbyty Ifan] by ascending onto the high, level moor, then easily up to this modest summit.
Slender stone pillar. No plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. One of the greatest mountain trigs. Merionethshire county top & only 900m summit south of Snowdon. Amazing height above surrounding countryside. Long walk in from Llanuwchllyn, then tremendous approach along Aran ridge. Excellent descent through woods to Drws y Nant. Radio mast in photo [thankfully] only temporary.
No Plug. FB missing. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Great Welsh mountain trig, must be 2nd most visited after Snowdon. Ascent by Mynydd Moel path, exhiliarating walk along high ridge to Pen y Gadair [trig point], then descent of Minffordd path to complete excellent horseshoe walk.
Snowdon\'s other summit & real trig point. Concrete pillar badly cracked. FB missing - recess & sighting holes plastered over. Metal plug [no letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Exhiliarating summit, high above the Pass of Llanberis. Classic ascent is by the great arete of Crib y Ddysgl, but much easier from Bwlch Glas [col with Snowdon Summit]. A great mountain trig.
Round stone pillar more a tourist attraction than a trig point. Metal plug [sunken letters] at centre of elaborate view finder. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. New summit complex not quite open. New steps provide easier & safer access to pillar, but have an \'approach to the shrine\' feel. Still, highest place in the British Isles outside Scotland, with a feeling of immense loftiness. As an alternative to the usual routes, try an ascent of the south ridge from Rhyd Ddu.
Stone pillar in good condition, except that much of concrete around spider lost. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Fine approach along the ridge from north east. Handrail the wall, keeping it to your right, cross it by the stile in Bwlch Cwmmaria, then ascend steeply to the trig. Spectacular descent into Barmouth.
Sturdy stone pillar. Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Superb approach from Bontddu, through spectacular woodland giving way to mountain scenery. Very steep pull over grass to gain high ridge, then handrail fence & wall to summit. A real mountain trig on grassy ledge between stone wall [stile] & precipice [\'diffwys\' in Welsh].
Stone pillar, somehow precariously perched on summit rocks. No plug. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. A real mountain trig on one of Snowdonia\'s great summits. Surprisingly easy mountain to get up for its height. Best route is to Llyn y Foel & then scramble up the east ridge. Descend the \'pony\' path to Plas y Brenin to complete a circle to Capel Curig.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. National Trust. AONB. Trig right on Lleyn Peninsula Coastal Path, south of Llanengan. Terrific approach along the high downs, overlooking Hell\'s Mouth.
Rounded stone pillar, in rather poor state. No plug. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. A real mountain trig on northern outpost of the Rhinogs group. Easily reached from the east [Trawsfynydd] by very good track from Cefn Clawdd Farm. Natural rock fortress of nearby Foel Penolau should be visited.
Large stone pillar with one corner stone partly dislodged. Metal plug [raised letters]. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Between Tegid & Efyrnwy lakes [although neither visible]. Has a moorland, rather than a mountain, feel. Tiring slog through the heather from the west.
Sturdy slate pillar [some graffiti etched on]. Unusually, no open sighting holes. Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. A circuit of the Moelwyns, from Croesor or Tanygrisiau, makes one of the finest outings in Wales. Trig on lofty summit of Moelwyn Mawr. A real mountain trig.
Pillar still very yellow. Some graffiti. No plug. Public. Access Land. AONB. Highest hill on the peninsula west of Pwllheli. Dominates the scenery for miles around. Looks tough from distance, but much easier from close up. Excellent path up from Garnfadryn village: starts beside old chapel, goes anti-clockwise round hill, then directly up.
Neat stone pillar. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Tremendous hill, high above Afon Mawddach. Enchanting ascent from Llanelltyd, up to lovely, secluded Llyn Tan-y-graig, then up through quiet woodland, with final steep push up to trig.
Chunky stone pillar. Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Brynllech Farm. Top of sheep pasture. Accessed from the south east, from the minor road from across the Dee bridge at Llanuwchllyn. Several fields to cross before reaching it. Snowdonia National Park.
Sturdy stone pillar [damage not obvious]. No plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. On modest hill Moel y Garnedd, commanding the heights overlooking Llyn Tegid. Easy walk from Bala. Footpath across Gwastadros moor fairly clear on the ground. Area not particularly boggy [at least on a dry day].
No plug. Public. Access Land. Clynnog Hills AONB. Great hill overlooking Caernarfon Bay. Reached from Clynnog Fawr post office by lane & bridleway. To access rocky summit & trig, need to cross dry stone wall [no stile, take care]. Combine with Gyrn Goch & Gyrn Ddu for best hill walk on the peninsula.
Metal plug [no letters]. Public. National Trust. AONB. Mynydd Rhiw, north of Rhiw village. Clear, wide footpaths through the gorse. Trig on summit crag, near mast.
Asphalt plug. Public. National Trust. AONB. Headland south of Rhiw village. Trig right on Lleyn Peninsula Coastal Path. Superb coastal walking above Hell\'s Mouth.
Stone pillar on centre summit of Yr Eifl [\'the 3-pronged fork\', erroneously translated into English as The Rivals]. Plug now filled by strange metal device [see photo]. Public. Access Land. AONB. Sub-mountain: steep, bouldery, heathery, highest point on Lleyn Peninsula. Route up good path from Trefor, via Bwlch yr Eifl.
Moss-covered stone pillar. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. If ascending from Fairbourne, route south east through forest not recommended, as badly churned by logging vehicles. Better to follow tarmac road south west & then make direct ascent of Pen y Garn from north west. This is steep but straightforward. Trig inside rough stone shelter partly overgrown by coarse grass.
Stone pillar a little way above top of quarry & not in any immediate danger. No plug. Public [public footpaths to trig at top of The Beacon]. Unproblematic approach from the north, along the bridleway from the minor road south of Rhoslefain. Snowdonia National Park.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Pen-y-bryn Farm [west of Mynytho]. In field [grass, no livestock] just behind the house. Easy to access, although permission should obviously be sought if owners at home.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private [Cefnamwlch Estates won the argument against it being Access Land]. Despite this, access is pretty easy. From the RoW [wide track] off B4417 south of Penllech, handrail the wall uphill [2 fences to cross]. The old stile into the woodland at the top is still there. Trig a few metres in, in sparse scrub & easily spotted.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Very easy little hill, round & grassy appearance, but gorsey top. Earthen ramparts of Castell Odo hill fort clearly discernible. Public. Access Land, but ironically not easy to access - can be reached across pasture from public footpath to north east [Rhoshirwaun side], but necessary to negotiate perimeter fence. May be easier access from gate further along B4413.
Rebuilt stone pillar, with newly restored top [some height seems to have been lost], but still lacking all metalwork [including FB]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. Stands above Roman road from Rowen to Aber. Ridge reached by public footpath from near Cae Coch Farm. Northernmost ground in Wales to reach 2000 ft.
Stone pillar located on northernmost 3000 ft summit in Wales. Asphalt plug. Public. National Trust. Snowdonia National Park. Direct ascent can be made from Aber or Llanfairfechan, but classic approach is from the south, along the high ridge of the Carneddau. A great mountain trig.
Trig pillar long gone - perhaps removed when ancient \"Cairn of David\" remodelled into present back-to-back wind shelters. Nevertheless, this is one of the great Welsh mountain tops [4th highest]. Tremendous ascent from Gerlan up the long ridge of Mynydd Du, part of the stunning mountain scenery of Cwm Llafar. Public. National Trust. Snowdonia National Park.
Neat stone pillar next to dry stone wall. Metal plug [raised letters]. Presumably private [? Groes Lwyd, property immediately below], but easily accessed, as in sheep pasture with public footpath across it - simply handrail wall to trig. Very steep minor road out of Harlech. Snowdonia National Park.
Square pillar of black slate, located behind dunes. Metal plug [raised letters]. Ystum Gwern Farm [B&B]. Private, although step-stile gives access to sheep pasture from public footpath to south, from A496. This path is very boggy west of the railway, so boots & gaiters well advised. Look carefully for trig in flat, featureless landscape. Snowdonia National Park.
Asphalt plug. Porthysgaden Farm [summer camping]. Private, but easily accessed, as separated from Lleyn Peninsula Coastal Path only by low, broken bank. Path muddy, so if walking from Tudweiliog, better use lane to farm & then good track [RoW] to coast. AONB.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Gaerwen Farm. On rounded hill Y Foel, highly visible across the Dee from Cynwyd. Cross the bridge & follow the minor road north beyond the crossroads. The next left turn is the \"little yellow road\" [actually a steep, narrow, tarmac lane]. As the hill is approached, an unlocked gate left gives access. It\'s then a stiff ascent of sheep pasture, to find the trig at the very top, just beyond a fence & wall [easily enough crossed at the corner].
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Public. Breakwater Country Park/Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path AONB. Most direct route up Holyhead Mountain is from the east, through the country park - paths steep & rough, but fairly quick if pushed for time. Exhiliarating summit above the sea - next trig due west is in Ireland. My 21st & last Anglesey trig pillar [& the county top].
Sturdy stone pillar, still with yellow lichen. Metal plug [raised letters]. 3 sighting holes open. Public. National Trust. Snowdonia National Park. South east from Penmachno & uphill all the way, by minor road becoming good track. Strike north onto open moor, & trig easily spotted on clear day, close to fence & stile.
OS state pillar destroyed 1978. No FB no. recorded. Stood in Dinas Dinlle Iron Age hill fort & may have fallen over the cliff-edge as it eroded [or did OS remove it, as dangerous?]. Inspection of beach below reveals nothing of relevance. Nevertheless, would have been an impressive trig site in its day, overlooking Caernarfon Bay. Comparable perhaps with Bwrdd Arthur, so deserves similar marks. Public. National Trust. Terrific place.
Metal plug [raised letters]. 3 sighting holes open. Public. National Trust. Quiet road-walk round from Rhydwyn, field-path onto NT land, then good footpath up the hill. Pillar [still very white] & monument visible from miles around. Sir William Thomas was a Victorian shipping magnate & philanthropist.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private - presumably Pen-y-graig, last & largest house in little hamlet of Seion. The wood, Coed Pen-y-graig, is unfenced & easily accessible from the approach track to the house. Then just strike up to the highest point [not far]. Woodland fairly sparse, & although passage requires care, trees & brambles offer no resistance.
No plug. Trig behind & above headland on Lleyn Peninsula Coastal Path. SSSI open to the public. Easiest access through Hafan y Mor holiday camp & along coastal path. RoW south from Penychain station very muddy.
Crack on pillar scarcely noticeable. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Not an easy one to locate, even in winter. In amongst brambles, gorse & bracken, on steep bank high overlooking B4415 [Efailnewydd - Rhyd-y-clafdy]. Not visible from below. Trig up to right, above gorse screen. Padding well advised.
Unusual kiln-shaped stone pillar. Metal plug [raised letters, but partly eroded]. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. Impressive hill dominates Porthmadog. Approach along public footpath from north west, from which a wide, clear, grassy track climbs the hillside. Final ascent by good, if steep, footpath from south east. No scrambling involved.
Odd-shaped stone pillar. Entire top section & spider well off-centre. Metal plug [sunken letters]. Presumably private, as not quite on Access Land [although makes no real difference]. Snowdonia National Park. Moorland trig above very steep minor road out of Trefriw [signed for Llyn Cowlyd]. Not visible from below, but prominent 410m spot-height east of trig is good guide as to where to leave the road. No fences to cross - just one broken-down wall.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Land belongs to one of nearby bungalows & is rented out for farming. Access ridiculously easy - hop over gate from B5112 & up the field. No bullocks - just sheep. Only 3 minutes walk from Carmel church.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Porthamel pillar, but still appears to be on Fodol Farm. Private. Very difficult to get hands-on, as in field separated from A4080 by chain-link fence on low, brambly wall. Climb over with extreme care - best place some way downhill on Brynsiencyn side. For non-climbers, FB conveniently faces the road.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private. On bank, left side of access track to Hafod Farm, off B5111 near Dolmeinir. Very easy access. No vegetation problem midwinter. FB faces track.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private. On land of property Pendefig, enclosed by roads just off A4080 near Llanfaelog. Probably a smallholding. Trig close to narrow lane at back. Disappointing location at edge of uninviting field - very dirty [horses], gate fastened with wire [need to climb over]. At least FB faces into field, so easily accessed.
Large, square, stone pillar. Tarmac plug. 3 sighting holes open. Public. Forestry Commission. Snowdonia National Park. Take scenic forest road from Gwydir Castle, then public footpath up through Hafna mine ruins. Trig at top, in clearing, just to right above path.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private [presumably Llanol Farm]. Trig sited outside perimeter fence of small reservoir, close to country crossroads south of Carreglefn. Uninspiring location in hedge at side of muddy field, but access easy enough in winter. Gates into field & reservoir compound unlocked.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Not Access Land [but may as well be]. Prominent flat-topped hill. Steep. Public RoW [not always distinct] from Llangybi, past St Cybi\'s well & up to huge cairn Garn Bentyrch. Trig just above cairn & clearly visible on approach to hill.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private [presumably Ysgubor-Fawr Farm]. The twin of Cefn-Uchaf. On concrete & stone plinth set in bank between fields. Easy access - gate from lane into west field unlocked & gate through to east field wide open. Hedge & cows gone - just fence & sheep. Up narrow lane off B4354 west of Y Ffor.
No plug. Public. Access Land. Trig amongst rocks on sharp, craggy top of grassy hill. Long-abandoned \'Dr Who\' slate quarry on south east side. Good walk up from Waunfawr station, by public footpath round Moel Smytho & across open moor.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Cefn-Uchaf Farm [B&B]. Stands on concrete blocks set in bank between fields. Very easy access for a private farmland trig. Gate into east field unlocked & wide gap in bank gives entry to west field. Close to narrow lane off Criccieth road near Rhoslan.
Metal plug [raised letters]. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. The summit & one side of the hill preserves an area of rough moorland grass, the other is improved pasture. In the middle of otherwise unremarkable countryside, west of Bryncir. Local lanes & public footpaths probably little used. Revisited 09/04/10 for views & photos.
No plug. Probably private [? on large farm, Bodfeirig, visible from trig], but very easy access. On modest hill Allt Fawr, near where crossed by seaward road out of Aberffraw. Trig reached from public footpath below by simply walking up open sheep pasture parallel to road.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private - in roadside corner of front lawn of house [No. 2 Pen Boncan], 5 minutes walk up road from Hermon hamlet [just a collection of drab houses]. Trig encroached by brambles on 2 sides, but FB just accessible. Permission should obviously be sought if owners at home.
No plug. Trig next to prominent mast on hill overlooking B5110 Brynteg-Llangefni road. Land purchased from owner of Rhuddlan Fawr Farm in late 2007 by North Wales Wildlife Trust as extension to their adjacent Cors Goch Reserve. Now accessible from footpath off B5110 to the south west. New fence & gates [entrance gate locked but OK to climb over, internal gates unlocked] in place. The Trust state that they intend to establish full public right of access, but Anglesey County Council has not agreed to this yet, due to dangerous nature of the main road re parking [should not affect access by those on foot from Cors Goch Reserve].
No plug. All 4 sighting holes open. Public. Access Land. Along quiet minor road from Brynrefail. Good path from north east up surprisingly rocky little hill. Highest point & only Marilyn on Anglesey island. Viewfinders on sides of trig very useful for spotting other trig hills.
No plug. Public. Access Land [entrance in south west corner, then look for ways up through the gorse - they are there]. AONB. Impressive site - prominent flat-topped hill overlooking beautiful Red Wharf Bay, & whole area dominated by the presence of the sea. Straightforward walk along quiet road from Llanddona.
Moot point whether just \'damaged\' or \'definitely missing\'. Pillar gone, but foundations & centre bolt remain. Either way, a fine mountain. Intensive quarrying adds to the interest. From Manod, take Cae Clyd - becomes footpath up to Llyn y Manod & up onto Manod Mawr. Public. Access Land in Ffestiniog enclave, so not actually within the National Park.
No plug. Private. Bangor Golf Club. Through blue gate on lane [Lon Pobty, from Bangor High St] - sign saying \"Private\" but no warning about trespassing. Keep to left round edge of golf course & trig at very top, right next to 14th tee. Only 5 minutes from the lane.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Private. Cefn Farm. Trig hiding in hedge between fields, & now separated from Cefn Cwmwd cottages by A55. Messy location - public footpath from B4422 into north field, but muddy; south field better, but need to climb gate back onto road. Barbed wire either side of trig, but easy enough to get over & pass right through hedge [in winter at least - brambles still bit of a nuisance]. Short walk over bridge from Rhostrehwfa.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private [owner unknown]. Need to climb tied-up gate to access unpretentious field of coarse grass & gorse. Trig easy to find by following Bridgeman\'s instructions below. Only 3 minutes walk from B4545 at Penrhyn Geiriol, above Trearddur Bay.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public - beside public footpath & close to road above Graianfryn Farm. Trig has appearance of being \'gaoled\' - fenced in front, but FB faces the path through the wire. Can be reached by road from either Llanddeusant or Llanfachraeth. Local field paths not recommended, as mostly low-lying & unreliable [especially likely to flood after heavy rain].
No plug. Public. Great Orme Country Park. Steep road walk up from Llandudno, following tramway [closed for winter]. Prominent trig a little apart from nearby Summit Complex, surprisingly not dwarfed by it, & still governs the summit of the Orme. Majestic headland, with much to discover & explore, well deserves the epithet \'great\'.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Private [owner unknown]. Top of scruffy field [sheep, horses] adjacent to Penygroes cemetery. Accessed by climbing gate & ducking under single wire. Location totally underwhelming.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Permissive. Hill is private land belonging to the property Y Garn, but public footpath runs across it, with permissive path from this to trig on rocky outcrop. Easy walk up from Pwllheli town, by either Allt Salem or Penlon Llyn.
Bottom half only of stone pillar - entire top section & all metalwork missing, including FB. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. At west end of famous Nantlle Ridge, but most easily & directly reached from Nebo village [be sure to include Mynydd Graig Goch & Craig Cwm Silyn in day\'s walk]. Still a proud mountain trig, perfectly in keeping with the industrial ruins in this melancholy but magnificent landscape.
No plug. Public - in Pentraeth Forest, a network of footpaths & tracks used for public recreation [also a rare habitat of red squirrels]. Needs careful navigation to find trig, but it\'s actually very close to a wide forest track [strangely, marked on the 1:50 OS map but not on the 1:25]. Access path clear enough & no problem with brambles. An excellent walking area, with the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path close by.
Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Mynydd Eilian [the actual hill-name - Llaneilian is the village] is not Access Land, but a public footpath runs from the narrow lane near Pengorffwysfa up to the trig [which carries a sign telling visitors to go back by the same route].
No plug. Public. Access Land. From road-head above Rhiwlas, good track round hill, with kissing gate on right giving access to clear, although steep, path up to trig [actual summit a little beyond & higher]. English name Douglas Hill long fallen into disuse, in favour of Welsh Moel y Ci.
Stone pillar in danger of crumbling from the bottom. FB missing. Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. New path out of Beddgelert alongside restored Welsh Highland Railway, then well known path from Cwm Cloch leading up to steep, rocky, sometimes scrambly, ascent up onto the summit plateau. A real mountain trig in an absolutely stunning location.
No plug. Public. Access Land. AONB. Useful permissive track from Rhoscolyn church up to Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, then good access path to trig, avoiding the gorse. Excellent, fairly level, cliff-top walk along coastal path to Trearddur Bay.
Asphalt plug. Public. The Little Orme is not Access Land, but there is a public footpath from the North Wales Path up to the top of the headland & trig. For safety reasons, keep to footpaths on the steep headland. Taken in as part of walk along North Wales Path from Llandudno to Penrhyn Bay. Trig stands above North Wales Wildlife Trust\'s Rhiwledyn Reserve & is clearly visible from Llandudno promenade.
Some graffiti on the pillar. No plug. SSSI maintained & promoted as a public amenity by Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust. Easy walk over from Penysarn along muddy public footpath, then ascent of waymarked tracks from east side to windmill & trig. Advise keeping to paths, as there is potential danger from old mine workings.
Hardened plastic/resin plug? Public. Access Land. Berwyn Mntns. Walking route from Llandrillo along Berwyn St - becomes steep track, then [in places, waterlogged] footpath up to Cadair Bronwen col. Exhiliarating walk along high ridge, handrailing fence on right. Trig visible from far off on clear day. A real mountain trig. Good, quick descent back to footpath down Foel Fawr.
Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. AONB. Good path to top of headland from Llanbedrog, on landward side. Short access path to trig from viewpoint [seats]. Also steep steps from beach up to Tin Man statue, then path from there [good descent route]. For safety reasons, obey signs warning visitors to keep to paths on steep headland.
Fragile-looking stone pillar. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. From minor road at Penystryd, east of Bronaber holiday village, direct strike across tussocky moor to large lake Llyn Gelli-Gain. Hill & trig clearly visible from there on good day. Easily reached & not a hard ascent. Featureless moorland landscape, & should not be ventured into in poor visibility.
Ruined stone stump inside circular stone shelter. FB missing. Severed top nearby has lost spider & plug, but hooks remain in situ. Public. National Trust. Snowdonia National Park. Hill steep, rounded, flattish top [so a true moel]. Exhiliarating summit, high overlooking the Menai Strait. Reached from Aber Falls by valley of Afon Gam & Gyrn col.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Public. Access Land. AONB. Excellent walk along Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path from Cemaes to Bull Bay. Trig atop huge quartzite crag [hence the name \"white rock\"]. No access path - just wade through the bracken & gorse. Accessible from the coastal path only - no attempt should be made to reach it from the road by crossing the private farm land.
Large, square, stone pillar hidden in dense conifer forest. Metal plug [raised letters]. Public. Forestry Commission. Snowdonia National Park. Access extremely difficult due to low branches & spongy forest floor. More an exercise in orienteering than hill walking. Route up forest tracks from Penmachno Woollen Mill to Fedw Deg, but beyond there have to plunge into the trees.... [for the very determined - or crazy - only]. High score for the challenge, the adventure, & the exhiliaration felt at actually finding it.
Some graffiti on the pillar. No plug. Public park [Parc Twthill]. Easy walk up from Caernarfon town centre, over footbridge & up to park entrance on left [opposite church]. Paths up to top of hill. Name is English [Toot Hill].
Large, round, stone pillar. No plug. Public. Access Land. Snowdonia National Park. High ridge reached from Aberllefenni by steep footpath through conifer forest [trees almost to the top]. Exhiliarating ridge walk, handrailing fence on right [no stile on Waun Oer]. Trig visible from far off on clear day. A real mountain trig.
Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Good walk up from Llanberis by minor road & public footpath to Bwlch-y-groes. Trig on moorhead above disused quarry & tips. Next to ruins of Marconi\'s wireless station [bricks scattered about].
No plug. Private. Welsh Water [next to sewage works]. Within fenced enclosure but gate easily climbed. No \"keep out\" sign. Muddy access path to trig, taking care to negotiate the gorse bushes. Soon found from Porthmadog High St by walking along Snowdon St to railway level crossing, then immediately on right.
Metal plug [sunken letters]. Public. In hedge at side of minor road above Penmynydd crossroads. Fenced behind but FB faces the road. Take care getting on & off plinth. No facilities whatsoever in Penmynydd.
No plug. Permissive. Bryn Iocyn Farm. Unfenced, just above public footpath. Seems to be no objection to walking up to it from the path. Easy walk up from Gyffin by Bryn-seiri Rd & farm access track. |
