Approached from Shildon following a cycle trail alongside the railway, with passengers on a steam train going nowhere. Then straightforward access to the trig site via a grass track from NW. Easy to spot where CJO had cut a square of turf between the hedge and quarry edge. Block not too deeply buried this time. Remains of rod marker. The OSGB36 list doesn't flag the trig as destroyed but would guess that the mark was deliberately hammered flat by OS to indicate that it should no longer be used. The abandoned quarry looked interesting.

Largish oblong concrete block 6 inch deep in iron-hard ground. Block has a streak of copper/brass in the middle that looked like a pebble but was in fact a chopped bolt or bent over rod. Clearly brass when scraped. 3.3 m east of sign (diagonal from sign to ground) in gap in hedge which we placed a brick beneath. 2.95m from quarry edge. 6.35 NW of hawthorn on quarry edge. See photos.

Large oblong block
with bent over brass rid
Brass when scraped. With what looks to be a stamped triangle.
Block in relation to hedge/fence with sign and brick beneath
Detail of fence, hedge and brick markers
Edge of quarry to left and hawthorne bush in background
As left - with small rock sticking out of ground as marker (all we could find)

No sign of block, however a nice location - quarry is full of interest - pity its a bit 'tresspassy'.

Block is somewhere above this quarry wall.
Block should be somewhere about here. ©ger
