First trig in a while since tearing my calf, ouch. On Mull for H's 80th, got a day to explore and this is very close to the farm! Pillar in very good nick, bracket pristine although cap missing. Stunning day, stunning views!

Parked at the entrance to the mast on the opposite side of the road and a short stroll to the trig. Many sheep droppings!

Missing centre cap. Almost dropped my keys down. Quick jaunt up from the road. Good looking across to mingary ard where I'd just left. And over to meall an inbhire where i was heading next.

Circular walk from holiday cottage in Dervaig, up steep road and famous Dervaig Hairpin (look up Isle of Mull Rally) to masts, short 100m heather bash to trig, down steep ferny slope to forest track. Follow tracks all the way to Mingary cottage then follow tracks on 1:25 to Mingary Aird, there is a small track from NM 41161 56395 all the way to the trigpoint. Stunning views. Back via the standing stones, Quinish House and Home Farm to Cuin. YSM0651 Dervaig

HISTORY: Pillar completed 3rd July 1958 costing £34.17s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NM52/T12 during 1960. Relevelled for height to Class 1 precision, secondary standards in 1978 and verified in July 1979. Last maintained by the OS in September 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from south. Parked, by south side of B8073, not in passing place, just beyond bend and track to comms masts at NM444519. Straight up and over heathery outcrop to small top. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces east, compass measurement 92°. Vented through three sight holes, port below FB still plugged, innards blocked with debris. View towards coast blocked by conifers, view inland to hills lost in cloud on day of visit.

Bagged on drive back to Tobermory. Parked on road side and walked up the hill through bracken. Ground boggy. Nice views until a rain shower blew in and got me. Iona stayed in the car.

I parked carefully on the verge of the road at NM 4448 5208. Gusting winds and thick drizzle made the short walk up to the pillar a very wet experience! Pillar sits almost directly beneath power lines. FB faces ENE; ENE sighthole plugged, all others open; top has plug/cap missing.

Set off for Mingary Aird, brothers labrador chooses to chase a deer instead of walking with us and 3 hours search in the rain later, dog reappears but no trig bagged. Consolation of Dervaig and Mingary on list for next Mull visit.

Not many trigs easier than this one. Visited on the day after the Mull Rally when the cars were screaming past this very point at ridiculous speeds. Excellent fun. Good day for it. Views not as spectacular as you might expect but Rum clearly visible to the North.
