Log #41. (304m). Leg 2 of a very windy 4 trig, 8 km linear walk from Allerton to Cottingley. Windy conditions cut short my plans for a 5-tigger. I cant understand this one. The comments by others referring to a surface block at another location are valid, but I agree with MAC.HAWK. The Grid Ref and WGS84 Aerial photos definitely put the pillar in the middle of what is now the garage at Thread Gold. (Also see peregrinus & John Riley logs). This house is roadside next to the reservoir. I will visit the surface block another day, Battled 70kph wind gusts up here, but the score is for the magnificent views.

Owner of the lower house took me to see the Surface Block. I didnt get a waypoint but it seemed to be some way from where the GPS was pointing (indicated accuracy 3m). Owner said the OS took the pillar away and put the block in approx same place. However the OS trig archive puts the Threadgold Block some distance from the Harrop Edge pillar, at SE 09616.906 34725.625, i.e. 35m NNW from site of former pillar. As with the nearby Close Head Lane there are chunks of concrete built into the roadside wall nearby but they dont appear to me to be trig related.

Concrete in roadside wall Didnt appear to me to be trig related. Some way SE from ex pillar site.

Trig definitely missing but surface block is there. Please don't go to the house near the road (the one with wrought iron gates with Thread Gold written on) as they don't own the field where the surface block is. Instead follow Back Lane northwards then turn sharp left down Stephenson Road to the first house. This is Greenland Farm, the home of Mr and Mrs Pickles. They are happy to allow people to go into their field and see the surface block. All they ask is you call at the house and get their permission before going into the field which is where they keep their horse. I chatted with Mrs Pickles for quite a while and explained what trigpointing was. She was concerned that someone else had been to the block before me this morning without asking permission (it did make it easier for me to find it as the grass was cleared away). Otherwise she was lovely and didn't treat me like a geek with a wierd hobby!

I called at 'Threadgold' and the owner kindly gave me permission to go through the property and into the field behind via a gate. The ownership of the field wasn't mentioned and I assumed it belonged to the same house - thanks to John for the clarification. Thanks also to the HCs for reporting that the surface block was here - would have missed it otherwise since theres nothing in the OS passive station database for this site. Have logged the condition for the SB rather than the pillar - latter definitely missing as others have reported. The block was already clear when I arrived and the owner of Threadgold implied that the OS still visit.

Harrop Edge reservoir not sure but perhaps this displaced the original pillar.

This pillar has been replaced with a surface block some years ago.It is now in a garden with obvious entry difficulties-discretion required. The surface block is at the back of a garden in grass and was eyeballed at close quarters by us at the above grid ref given. We gained permission for the owner who informed us about the change from pillar to surface block. We are not sure that the pillar was on exactly the same spot that the surface block occupies.
