Parked at the end of the road at Mains Of Ulbster. Farm doesnt look lived in but the yard is used for storage of silage bales. There is enough room for two cars. Through the small gate and up the hill following the quad track. Quick walk around the old radar station as well which is in reasonable condition without the usual unnecessary vandalism.

Parked at new house which for the moment is unoccupied and followed track as far as we could before heading a short distance up to the trigpoint.

Parked down road towards Ulbster Mains farm near cemetery. Climbed the hill. Fence or two to cross. Nice views.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 10th April 1952 costing £16.8s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station ND25/T13 in 1952. Levelled for height in 1954. Last maintained by the OS in June 1981. SITE VISIT: No safe stopping place on A99 without causing obstruction. Approached from east. Parked by west side of south end of unclassified back road at ND335421 just outside derelict farm. Across small valley at south end of pond and as straight a route up hill as gorse permits. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces WSW, ~256°. Vented through NW sight hole. Full 360° open outlook.

Easy ½-mile walk along track from A99. Like TP2442 Costa, visited 2 days previously, Hill of Ulbster is the site of a WWII RAF radar station in the Chain Home Low system. The remains of a few military buildings can be seen to the east of the trig. Nice countryside with heathery/grassy terrain round the trig but not a great deal in the way of views. Pillar in very nice condition with metal cap and well-defined letters. Parking possible with care on the verge by the track entrance at ND325425 (busy road, soft but stony verge).

vgc, metal cap, deep letters, heather summit, track from W leads most of way to summit - beeline is boggy. Nearby old buildings apparently military.
