Heading south west on the A603 a couple of miles from Barton, pulled in to an entrance to University site where there was a metal gate but pedestrian access through gate , not locked, at the side. Knocked at door of house but no reply. Wasn’t sure if the pillar was near this entrance or if there was another entrance to the site further to south west. After double checking map decided the pillar was further to the south west. Was tempted to walk across the open ground from the entrance I was at but then chose to head further to south west to next entrance about 500 metres further on. Nowhere to pull in off main road so pulled over on roadside at minor road a couple of hundred metres beyond the gate. Walked back along the verge. Over gate into site of radio telescope, looking abandoned and derelict. Headed north east around the telescope dish and fought a way through tall nettles onto a ridge path. Needn’t have battled through because after a hundred metres or so spotted pillar in open meadow fifty metres from the ridge of ground. Cap plugged. Unusual high FB number without S prefix. View of meadow. Wonder what the site is now used for. In its day must have been state of the art with telescope dishes moving along a track.

Access via the gate as per Asbown below... Just inside the gate hidden in the trees are two huge 10m (approx) radio dishes facing upwards, like a giant salad bowl. Not been used for many years having been decomissioned in 1968. They are part of a large array of these dishes, arranged along a 1-mile track. They could park them anywhere along the track they wanted so as to get different characteristics of the overall array. As for the trig pillar, well this year its in a field of wheat. Easy access along tramlines. Got my legs drenched with the overnight dew.

This pillar is in quite a spectacular location; not because it is in a high or scenic place (it sits in the middle of a field), but because it sits very near a large radio telescope dish. Do not access from the road through the observatory; park on the side of the A603, jump over the cess and go up a bank to gain acces to the field.
