The owl has been decapitated! I looked around for the head thinking it might have blown off during last week's Storm Eowyn but it wasn't lying close by so it looks like someone might have (somewhat bizarrely) made off with it...

Coming from the west along the Fife coastal path. Just as you see the hill from the path there is a way on the right of the gorse up to a gate. Over the gate, up to the field and follow the field edge past the big piles of earth works and you will come to the trig. The trig is in very good condition but has been converted to a memorial for a local farmer. The owl is an interesting touch!

I had not looked at previous logs so this was a horrified surprise but perhaps fitting for my 400th pillar. In some ways the memorial will ensure that the pillar is preserved (although the spider is covered over by hideous, plastic nodding bird - is it meant to be an eagle owl?). It was easy enough to access from the car park at the end of the road but the final track up to the pillar is barred by 5 ft high gating that does not open and is slightly wobbly to clamber over. Views of the Tay were wonderful as the evening sun was sinking to the NW. Evidence of recent cow inhabitation on route up but none seen.

From Peacehill farm to SE (not the usual route). At farm, signs ask to avoid farmyard and direct you around field edges on well mown strips (very nice). Not always obvious where to go - follow signs for Balmarino keeps you on the right track. Turn right leaving track at NO 386252 and follow field edge around back of cottages to reach track/field edge north to pillar.

The trigpoint was covered with sackcloth at the time of my visit. Not sure if it is being repaired or not, given that previous visitors have said the pillar is slightly damaged. I have logged it as slightly damaged only because I assumed this was the reason for it being covered. I couldn't see the ipllar and didn't want to uncover it!

The Tay Bridge Disaster memorial is well worth a look. So sad - didn't realise how young some of them were.

Well! Not sure whether this is an arty way of preserving a pillar, or complete desecration? Did the Council sanction this, or is this the work of 'private enterprise'? - would be interesting to know. (see edfielden's photo). Walked up from Wormit, under the Tay Railway Bridge, across a couple of fields to reach this uniquely set trigpoint. No views today: a dampening mist had descended - could only see a few spans of the Rail Bridge from the Fife Coastal Path.

I parked at Wormit and took the Fife Coastal Trail for about 900 metres. I too found a stray seaL which handily seemed amenable to being used as a seaT! I climbed up the thick grassy bank full of dew and into the field containing the pillar. A handy tractor track leads up to the corner where it is. Imagine my surprise when I walked up to the pillar to find it had become part of the backrest for a stone and mortar built seat, evidently built within the last 18 months. Shocking! Despite my reservations at least whoever did it had the decency to leave the flush bracket uncovered by creating a recess in the back of the 'seat'. I think Slightly Damaged is the most appropriate condition! FB faces W; S sighthole plugged, all others covered by the new construction; top plugged with mortar. Superb views across the Tay on this beautiful clear day. Dundee Law war memorial (TP11797) and the nearby pillar (TP2912) are clearly visible to the north, as is Northfield pillar (TP5182) to the NE.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 30th August 1948 costing £8.10s.0d. Later in 1948 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NO42/T29 in the Dundee secondary block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1967. This trig point was last maintained by the OS on October 1981. Easily seen from the Tay Bridge.
