I was staying for a couple of nights at Student Castle just down the road so this was an obligatory last call before leaving Edinburgh. The security man was happy to lead me the short distance to this replica.

Glad to finally bag this one after missing out in the past, had to sign in with security but no problems. The trig is constructed out of plywood but has all the metalwork. Great location and history to this one.

Telephoned the day before to enquire about opening times and if it was necessary to book an appointment. Appointment not necessary but they made a note in the reception book to expect a visitor. On arrival explained the purpose of my visit, receptionist called a colleague who came to escort me to the pillar, a few feet away from the reception. Unique. Two thirds full size and made of plywood. Apparently it gets moved around a bit. Not sure how to score this one. It’s a model and there are no views. Still, significant to visit. Would have loved to stay an browse maps for an hour or six but I think you have to know what to ask for. Not really like a normal library where you get books off the shelf. Receptionist said they don’t get as many people visiting as they used to. Just thinking, it could be a real feature of the Library. They could provide a lot more information about it and sell books about TPs.

I asked at the front desk if i could see the trig point . . . and was told that i would need an appointment to enter the map viewing area! You can see it from the reception! I said i only want to go and take a picture of the trig and pointed to it, she had no idea what it was or for. She escorted me to the trig and back again.

Library was closed today but young lady on the other end of the intercom agreed i could come in for a look. Trig in a corner at the far end of the building and i was escorted in and out. The extent of the building work was explained on the way and lady was aware of geocaching but didn't seem to be aware of logging trig points so i made her aware of this site.

YSM417 national libraries of Scotland exhibition. First time I have ever got a taxi to a trig point. Turns out there is another library in Edinburgh with the same name and taxi went to that first but I knew we still had over 1km to go. Showed him the map and he got me to the correct library. He parked outside, I jumped in, got the photos and back out again. Ya dancer.

Pity I've not time to stay longer. Came away very impressed with Edinburgh. It's even got its own mini mountain. My day trip from York ended with a one hour delay. So some compo may be due if Mr Branson is true to his word. We'll see. He was true to his word - got the single Edinburg/York fare back.

slight delamination of plywood near spider. easily moved as I discovered when leaning against. Spent a few minutes looking through the map resources. An old large scale map was present on the map table depicting the site from a previous age, a biscuit factory occupied the site with trams tracks passing along the roads.

This curiosity was one item I'd been looking forward to for my whole trip up to Edinburgh. So, as I approached the entrance to the library I was left wondering why the whole building was in darkness even though it wasn't closing time. I looked at the holiday dates and then realized ... The 30th of November is St Andrews Day! Luckily enough the pillar is currently positioned in view of the window. No chance of seeing the flush bracket, though I can say with assured confidence that it is overall still in good condition :).

It's hidden until you get to the desk, and then it's right behind you. Permission to photograph it was given without difficulty, although it is banned elsewhere in the library. But it's not the real thing - only a wooden replica.

This is at least the fourth position I have seen this pillar in and looking at others' photos it has had at least another two positions. National Library of Scotland map library. Wasn't sure what kind of response we would receive when requesting to take photographs here but the staff are used to people like us and were pleased to oblige. Also very helpful regarding search for archived OS maps while there.

Found whilst in Edinburgh for a few days for my brothers 50th birthday. As I approached the reception desk the young lady sitting there asked if she could help me, I would like to see your exhibition trig pillar I replied, certainly she said, its right behind you. I asked if it was OK to take some photos of it, no problem and she even offered to take the one of me standing by it.

Made to feel like we were a bit weird asking to the see the trig which is now in a corner. You can spot it from the reception desk. We asked if we could take photos, they said no at first but then went and asked someone else who gave us the thumbs up. We ended up having an audience laughing at us as we took are photos.

This pillar once lived in the Ordnance Survey Offices which were on the west side of Causewayside, almost opposite where it is now. That building is now demolished and the site is occupied by a Tesco Metro.
