TP1022 - Bardon Hill
Logged Visits:
found as part of the Charnwood marathon, trig used as self clip point at mile 13. Great views.
Very good views. http://www.heavyhorses.co.uk/humps
Still undecided about the mark for this pillar which I visited with Extra Shorty on a fine sunny autumn day. Not the easiest hill to reach and the summit furniture and the massive hole while of interest (especially to Extra Shorty) do not enhance what would otherwise be a pleasant summit. No quarry blasting on Sundays though this might have been something different to experience.
Great visibility today unfortunately not the best view as overlooking an industrial estate on one side. Some local lads had camped at the Trig overnight.
Another sunny day. Very dry underfoot. Came up from Bardon Hall side and went down other way towards Coalville. Made a nice afternoon. Great views at the highest point in Leicestershire.
Parked on small community centre car park near Copt Oak Road on A511.Easy 20 minute walk although very muddy crossing quarry road.Extensive views over Leicestershire including large quarry near by.Leicestershire County top.
Amazing views once one filters out masts and quarry
Second visit, got a photograph this time. The views (apart from the massive quarry!) were exceptionally good on the day of our visit.
Found as always while caching, didn\'t actually plan to come up here today but glad it did - superb views!
Leicestershire County Top. A pleasant evening stroll to a fine viewpoint. White painted trigpoint with tarmac plug.
Followed the Ivanhoe Way from the north, then up through the trees. Extensive views and a huge quarry.
Trig in good order, interesting view over a working quarry
went here before nearby beacon hill, it was my first time ere and my last as it is a total dump, trig looks like a london telephone box, all fences around u like being in prison complete crap hole
Footpath off A511 starts at layby-north side of road between church and petrol station(s)@ coptoak road. A pleasant country stroll-not too steep, might be muddy in winter. Once across a quarry plant road there are steps and tracks up through moorland to the comms tower and on to trig. you wont realise how near to the edge you are until you get to the fence and look down!!!. see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXqh9YRi8fc _Logged as slightly damaged as there appears to be erosion around the foundation.
Main aim for the day trig, county top, marilyn all in one. Walked in from the N over open land with quarry hidden till the last bit. definitely best view of the day
Visited while caching. Nice view over misty coalville - quarry fairly quiet on a Sunday.
Asphalt plug: top screed damaged, only slightly. No S prefix. On granite outcrop at brink of busy quarry, extensive view, info board & comms mast.

Great walk upto the trig on a fine day, in some places it was like being in the heart of the Peak district. I couldn't belive how big the quarry was.
Found the nearby Geocache and had a good read of the information board whilst watching the quarry go at full pelt! What astounding views from here today and plenty of birders around looking for a peregrine falcon. Very white-painted. On huge plinth above Bardon Quarry. E sighthole open. Some graffiti. Damage to one of the top corners but otherwise unscathed. Asphalt plug. Great spot, especially after a pint in Leicestershire's highest pub!
Did this one up the Ivanhoe Way while doing the nearby cache: Excellent views from up here, well worth the climb. Pillar is a bit tatty, flaky paint etc.
Walked in on Ivanhoe way from housing estatethe footpath to near pillar.Still foggy and wet.
Pillar in farly good condition - excellent views all round (shame about the quarry)
Great views of Leicesterhire from this the highest point in the county - did Grand old Duke of York and the Leicestershire Cache Bash today too
Damaged may be wrong word for condition. It is still in one piece but badly covered in graffiti
Situated right by a large quarry face and a transmitted, you would not expect this to be a god pillar, but the views - wow!
Overrun with orienteers today!
Pillar in good condition except for Plug replaced by concrete, and a certain amount of graffiti. Excellent views and a nice place to watch the sunset. Only detraction was the large amount of Litter spread around the immediate area.
A climb up around the quarry that left me gasping for breath!! But well worth it for the views, if you mentally block out the huge man-made hole. Apart from some red graffiti, the trigpoint is in good condition.
Good walk up to the top. also a nearby cache. liked the views (even the quarry)
Grey day but great views still (beyond the quarry). Found the nearby cache & could even log the County Highpoint!
2nd Visit. Came with family. Visibility reasonable. A bit muddy on the way up. Really good panarama.
Came for the nearby GeoCache but was delighted to bag our second trig point - all counts for the Cacher of the Month table ;-)
Quite a strenuous walk up this hill after a dormant August due to the heavy rain. The trig is painted and has graffiti on it. Treat yourselves as this is also a County top and there is a nearby geocache.
The views are good up here on a clear day but the trig has been painted and has signs of graffiti
I found the pillar when doing Geocache GCJJ89 (Grand Old Duke of York).
on the edge of Bardon Quarry but probably safe from destruction--the summit of Leicestershire
bagged c/o work....ta
Bad weather, Muddy path. Found Vandals actually defacing it when we got there. Cheeky Buggers!
Been here many times as it close to my house. It is also 30 feet from my Geocache "Grand Old Duke of York" GCJJ89
Next to massive quarry
Part 2, 17 miles of the Ivanhoe Way
Highest hill in Leicestershire, and most of it lost to a huge quarry. Pillar is a bit graffitised
Quarry very close.
No details noted - good hill albeit quarried & part reinstated, transmitter on summit, summit a tiny granite tor on quarry edge, wide view,
Don't fall in the quarry. Leicestershie County Top.
Leicecestershire county top. vast quarry to W and N. Central TV mast. |
