TP1309 - Ben Vorlich
Logged Visits:
Spider centre open, no cap or plug. Third visit to this popular Munro.
Bagged this Munro in very wet, cold and windy conditions.
Good condition pillar with the exception of some damage to the top screed. FB faces east-ish with the cap missing and no plug. All sightholes are open but blocked internally so no pillar bolt. Came up from Inveruglas via Loch Sloy. Reached the dam then just headed straight up the side. Very very steep until the bealach, then easy walk along the ridge. Descended via Coire na Baintighearna until the mapped track then followed that down. Long day.....
True summit to SE of trig
Parked in the Inveruglas visitor centre car park(free). Followed the A82 south then took the tarmac track which heads under the railway & towards Loch Sloy dam. About half a mile before the dam there is a small cairn on the right of the track which indicates the point to start the long, sometimes boggy ascent. Superb location, with views in all directions,Ben Lui dominating to the north,Ben Lomond to the SE & views down Loch Lomond. The true summit isnt at the trig but at the crag & cairn which is 2m higher,200m further north along the top.
Ran up from Inveruglas Visitor Centre car park, along ridge over southern top. Quite icy with frozen snow.
Great day, could see for miles. Came up over the Little Hills
Top screed damaged, otherwise vgc. Cast onto rock at cairn (on slightly lower S summit). Fine winters day: inversion over Loch Lomond and Glasgow. Took in the 3 Corbett Tops: some interesting bad steps on the E ridge.
Walked up over the Little Hills and down over Stob nan Coinnich Bhacain. Didn't see any other people on little hills but several people on main Ardlui path.
Couldn't see much at the moment I was at the pillar. The mist was down and the wind was howling. Given some of the views I did enjoy today, I imagine it is pretty spectacular on a good day. I should have visited the trig before having my lunch just below the actual summit (a little north of the trig).
Excellent day in the snow. Fabulous views in all directions
another Feb visit with Nigel Naylor of YAC, but weather couldn't be different from 1st time. Up from the south side, fairly mild day and pretty well no snow on the hill! What a contrast from my first visit in Feb '99
Parked in Inveruglas then walk up towards lock sloy before making a b-line over the SE ridge. Descended on a visible path down to the dam. Great views if a little hazy then a solid soaking in the last 30mins of the walk out. Still nice to do after a day in the office
Note this is BEN VORLICH in the Arrochar Alps by Loch Lomond. The other Ben Vorlich by Loch Earn (S6931,NN629189) is listed by its OS official name COIRE GARBH. Anyhow, S6510: Pillar in reasonable condition but much of the top surface has been lost to frost. Spider: OS centre plug lost, centre open. All four sighting holes open, pillar bolt buried by debris dropped down centre pipe. Flush bracket faces 71° ENE. Climbed the Ben in an anti-clockwise circle starting and finishing at Ardlui. There are no continuous paths on much of that route. Perfect visibility and a sunny day helped with navigation, but not to be recommended in poor conditions. S6510 was built as a secondary station in Block NS29, Greenock at a cost of £102.2s.0d, around five times the average cost of a pillar in the early 1950s. Views to Ben Alder, Ben More, Coire Seicheach, Coire Garbh, Ben Ledi, Ben Cleugh, Ben Venue, Meikle Bin, Ben Lomond, Ailsa Craig, Goat Fell, Ben Narnain, Ben Ime, Jura, Ben More (Mull), Ben Cruachan, Dunaneach, Ben Nevis. Photographed 13/05/2006, GRP.

My favourite of the Arrochar Alps on account of the amazing views in all directions, particularly of lower Loch Lomond and its islands. Quickly reached by going straight to the dam and heading directly north-east up the steep slopes with the ridge top in sight all the way and then its an easy walk across to Ben Vorlichs various tops.
Mist on top - so I missed the trig on the way to the top, only found it on the way back.
old munro log no details
the brass centre of the spider is missing--not quite on the summit--great views--as I climbed the long slog up the grassy side a couple of fit young lads coming down said "are you all right, old timer" bah
From Inveruglas, back down very steeply to damn, with Fiona.
Slight detour en route from Prescot to Glencoe
snow, wisping cloud and very strong wind made this a very freezing visit with Gill Brooke-Taylor and my Dalamtion dog Jasper. he was very pleased to get down into the quiet shelter of the the eastern slopes afterwards.
mist and low cloud
Filthy weather for May, snowed for a short while up top but found good shelter.
Whole summit area was extremely icy - crampon country.
Wet wander up off a train that left Wolverhampton that morning. Was down for tea. Try doing that today, now that the gits have the railways.
Munro bag. Cloud on summit no view.
long day climbing ben Vane before
Main section of Arrochar Alps more interesting. Still, had now done both Ben Vorlichs.
Early Munro bagging foray..
