TP2148 - Chestnuts Inclosure

Hard to get to as very overgrown but there is a faint path. Need long trusers and a long sleeved top to fight your way through it and views not spectacular.
Annoyingly couldn\'t find this. Very overgrown with brambles. I\'m sure it\'s in there somewhere.
Still a faint track through the brambles.
Good paths until very top then lots of brambles and nettles however a small track is cleared to access the trig if you look hard enough.
Brambles, brambles, brambles. I was just about to give up when I found the tp with one last desperate effort.
Good paths most of the way and even a partial one through the brambles.
Had to carry the dog over the brambles to get him to the top of the trig but it was worth it. Lovely walk through the woods with distant views of the river Severn through the trees.
Good parking directly east of trig, by public phone/post box. Was surprised at the last two logs as it looked like someone had beaten a path to the trig. A bit of scrambling, but not too bad. Some nice views (not from trig) of the Severn now that the leaves are falling.
Gave up 20m form the trig with the nettles and brambles getting too much. It is however visible now. the key is to leave the main path heading west along the natural break shown on the latest explorer map then turn right after about 30 paces. Parking isnt brilliant either but there are some good sized sweet chestnuts about at the moment
Dense brambles and nettles obscured this one. Had a good look around but to no avail.
Parked at the end of the Forestry Commission road west of the hill and walked up. Quite an easy climb but a bit muddy in places. T/P is in good condition but a bit on the 'grubby' side. All metalwork is in place, including the cap. Not too much in the way of views from the T/P as there is too much woodland in the way but the River Severn is visible through the trees.
Parking due W of Pillar then a couple of paths that lead to the top.No views from pillar but nice ones of the Severn from the parking place.
We approached from the east and found it quite easily (someone had recently beaten a track to it). Plug with heavily indented lettering.
There has been quite a lot of tree felling in the forest and the tracks were pretty muddy in the rain.
Pillar has some moss and lichen but is generally good, if only the trees were cleared a great view of the severn would be had. logged coords after 30 seconds of averaging on Magellan Sportrak Color. 1 meter difference is fine by me!
A very muddy climb up to this one,my first trig point.Lovely views over the estuary from where I parked.
vgc, metal cap deep letters, just W of tk at summit. Good chestnuts!
In the forest but not oppressive since there has been much thinning and many of the trees are broadleaf. Came straight past here in the 1987 British Orienteering Championships. |
