TP3344 - Giants Grave
Logged Visits:
Bagged while on circular walk from Pewsey. Next to footpath but other side of barbed wire fence. Great views.
Pillar in good condition, on the wrong side of the fence line so a quick hop over is needed to get up close and personal with it. Good views from here south over the Vale of Pwesey towards Salisbury Plain, and east along the southern escarpment of the Marlborough Downs as Giant's Grave pokes out into the vale. Rain threatening on this second visit so views a bit hazy.
Also logged as YSM380
I left the car in the car park to the north east and walked along the ridge to this one via the Martinsell pillar. An easy walk along the ridge . The pillar is in generally good condition with a few chips out of the top edge and the centre plug has been removed. It was very misty this morning which obstructed what I imagine are to be exceptional views to the south and east.
Great views today
Great spot.
Found as part of an extension to the Martinsell geocaching loop. Amazing views up here.
Great views.
Long pull up here to find no memory card in the camera. Nice other mark on the way up
Bit of a slog up here on a very hot day, but it was worth it for the amazing panorama.
Splendid views
Found while caching in the area. Superb views today on a very sunny autumnal morning.
Good condition but wrong side of barbed wire fence. Superb views in all directions.
Walked over from Martinsell along the ridge - great short walk, great views, very quiet - Pillar Good condition - missing cap and plug. Interesting nearby BM
Visited whilst geocaching in the areas
Great climb up this mini-mountain from Oare! Superb views all round and an excellent walk beyond.
Walked in from the parking to the NW. Windy day but rain held off.Excellent viewpoint from pillar.
A charm of goldfinches were flying around the crest of the hill on my approach from Martinsell. The pillar is sited on a grassy promontory close to some earthworks; it has no plug and has FB S2173. It looks south over Pewsey and its Vale to the scarp of Salisbury Plain from Walbury to Westbury; west over Oare to distant views of the flatland of West Wiltshire and to the north are Oare and Huish Hills with the scarp-line meandering away to the northwest.
all around the harvest is mostly safely gathered in.
Pleasant stroll along West Wilts Way from Martinsell. Electric fence missing. Barbed wire still present. Nearby BM is a rivet.
Visited after Martinsell, someone must have made a nocturnal visit recently, several spent firework rockets on the ground around the pillar!
Other side of recent barbed wire fence and electric fence Excellent views
Barbed wire restored, nice walk along the scarp from Martinsell using the access land to ling the footpaths that cross the hill.
Puff pant etc etc. Turns out photo is of bolt benchmark. Have added it to www.bench-marks.org.uk database
This is on the north side of the fence from the rivet and someone had made it easy to crawl through the barbed wire by removing the barbs. In good condition on top of a concrete footing. The plug is missing.
Long walk in the wonderful Marlborough Downs on a hot (29/30 C) windy day. Fascinating Iron Age promontory fort of just over two acres is the Giant's Grave.
vgc, no cap or plug, fine compact summit. 50m to SW is small stone pillar with rivet BM on top
Short distance from Martinsell.Tarmac plug.
White pillar behind barbed wire fence reached from Martinsell Hill (S1500). |
