Stood on railway bridge facing north, went through gate and right, walked straight ahead, trig is at top left corner of a field hidden from view.
Should have read other peoples logs first. Gained access to the old railway line and then spent ages \"dicking about\" (as Pete Boggs would say) in the undergrowth till i stumbled across it
Visible and reasonably accessible. I approached from the southern side canal path to the north of the Kirklees Way, climbed onto the old railway at the side of the bridge. From here the pillar is visible but a steep bank needs to be climbed and descended to the promintory on which the pillar stands but at least you end up on the right side of the barbed wire. Pillar in good condition but looks somewhat forlorn and unkempt with its covering of moss. Plug has indented lettering. Take care to avoid falling off the rock cliffs just beyond!
My first Trig. wandering round hedgerows aged 7 circa 1967. drove down to old r/way bridge. 30 yds to trig. Watch drop to right! Track down is pretty muddy but hardcore underneath (last seen 20 years ago !)
Interesting to get to. I first followed the Kirklees way to the old railway bridge, thought it would be not far form the opposite side of the field. To make sure I retraced my steps and followed the footpath down to the canal and up onto the old railway. After a short pull up a banking I found the trig right where I had expected it to be.
Drove to within 100m and walked the last bit. Just be careful not to set back, theres bit drops around here

The last of of a 22 mile trigathon hike from Ravensthorpe to Dewsbury Rly Stations. Came along the Kirklees Way from Thornhill Edge. Not visible from the bridleway but after crossing the bridge over the old railway line turn immediately left through the metal gate and follow the field edge, at the corner youll find the trig (almost hidden behind the hawthorn bush). I had to roll under the barbed wire to physically tig the trig today. As John says theres little room to manoevre, theres a very steep drop to the old rly line. Good views to Ossett. Revisited 29/05/2006. And again 18/05/2009.
Nicely tucked away in the foliage at the top of a hellish drop into the old railway cutting. I didn't realise the danger at first as I stepped back to take one of the photos but looked round just in time. Nice quiet area for a walk on a sunny Sunday.
You can drive down from the B6117 to opposite the field entrance if you so wish. It seems a strange place to put a trig and the FB no suggests it was a later build. Plug with indented lettering.
At the top edge of railway cutting. FB faces into hedge. Industrial landscape. [16 October 2004, 10:35] Passing by so revisited; still there - plastic plug, moss growing on pillar. Close to a track but not visible from there.
vgc; metal cap shallow letters; N edge of rly cutting 50m W of bridge
Reasonably easy to get to, provided you take the right path! I ended up crossong the canal, and climbing a couple of steep banks because I believed the map! The return journey to the car was much easier. Another FB number with no "S" before it. See photos.
Still there, nestling under a bush a the top of the former railway cutting. A bit dilapidated and in need of a coat of paint ... beware steep drop to NW of trig! GPSr gave coordinates as near as to above, elevation as 160ft |
