TP5234 - Orchardhill
Logged Visits:
Parked in gateway West of Orchard Farm followed wall to trig
Very stiff climb up from layby but rewarded with good views of river and rugby ground.
Steep climb up field from layby on A698, then diagonally across fields. Pillar stands close to dry stone wall. Views fairly good. Painted white (weathered). Large chunk of concrete missing from to exposing spider. Retains plug, large deep indented lettering.
Malicious damage to pillar top in a failed attempt to remove spider. Damage similar to that on nearby Chapel Hill which was caused between 1991 and 1994. Pillar otherwise in very good order on a raised foundation. Spider retains OS centre plug with deep indented font. Flush bracket on SE face of pillar. RHS sighting hole open, others plugged. At the northmost corner of an empty grazing field. Views to Gala Law, Drinkstone Hill, Muirfield, Eildon Mid Hill, Black Hill NT72, Minto Hill, Peniel Heugh and Rubers Law. Revisited and photographed 28/08/2004, GRP.
metal cap deep letters; top damaged with spider exposed but intact; pillar cracked; pasture overlooking town
Top of pillar chipped away around spider. See photo.
First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 12th July 1953 costing £12.16s.0d. In 1957 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT72/T76 in the Jedburgh secondary block. Flush bracket S7579 was levelled for height in 1958. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in October 1986. Pretty sure the malicious damage to the top of the pillar had not occurred on this visit. GRP. |
