TP5799 - Sand Field
Logged Visits:
Metal cap, wide raised letters. From E, obvious track then boggy moorland. Nice view. Back via Mid Field having bagged the HuMP on a previous visit.
I took a very similar route to the previous correspondents! I parked with care just off the road at HU 3309 4745 and walked NNW across the sheep-grazed field to join the track heading west. At HU 3225 4753 I left the track and headed north up the moorland hill. The wet patches didn't seem quite as bad as I had seen on similar hills in the past few days! The pillar sits on the peaty summit with FB facing E; W sighthole open, all others plugged; metal cap with wide raised letters. Good views of Ronas Hill, Foula, Fitful Head & Fair Isle, and I could just make out the pillar on Scalla Field (TP5833) 7 miles away. Fugla Ness Lighthouse (TP9644) is also visible from here.
A sunny day and fine for the time of the year. Similar route to dmwhite but with many more boggy areas en route. Watched by ravens near the top and found the remains of a wind speed indicator close to the trig - the wind had obviously won the battle.
Starting at HU3315477, through gate and westwards along track to Loch of Scrooie. Branch northwards up hill land, minding out for the numerous wet patches to the trig point with views westwards out to Foula Northwards to Ronas Hill and Southwards to Fitfull Head, great on a good day with plenty of bird life as well.
