TP5946 - Shillhope Law
Logged Visits:
Nice steady walk up from Shillmoor.
An off the beaten track 'marilyn' visit while calling in on Clennel Hall Hotel, which is being run by neighbour opposite me in York.
from Shillhope, easy track all the way, plenty happening on the ranges today, good views.
Glorious day. Walked from Alwinton, past Shillmoor and up the quad bike track onto Shillhope Law. After some wonderful views all around, I descended northwards then down to the Usway Burn and Shillmoor. Still a superb hill with a feel of isolation. Lots of military repairing flood damage.
Started out from Alwinton but a lovely walk up from Shillmoor.
Car park and picnic site provided at NT865103. Cross footbridge on opposite side of road, follow path through to access land then straight up NW slope. Tertiary station NT72/T90, completed 16th June 1954. Pillar in good condition, in wind shelter. Spider centre plugged with tar. Front and back sight holes open, others plugged. Flush bracket faces 44°, NE. Views to The Cheviot, Bloodybush Edge, Hedgehope Hill, Ridlees Cairn, Thirl Moor, Lamb Hill, Windy Gyle.
Great walk up despite the nearby gun fire on the ranges but seems we weren't the targets or they're bad shots. Strange little wall around the trig which has some grafitti on it despite being a good hours walk uphill from the nearest road.
Lovely warm day, slight showers.
Bagged this after Linbrig trig. Was due to do Bloodybush Edge and Wether Cairn but there was lots of very low cloud (about 500m) and rain. Nevermind, Shillhope cleared for a short time and I climbed it. Usually good views to the big Cheviot tops but not today! Easy climb to top via Inner Hill from Shillmoor and ground was damp but not impassable. Trig ok apart from some old grafitti. Good shelter cairn surrounding trig.
Great tp after a fairly long but easy ascent. Great views from the top, which can be a little boggy after wet weather but does not present any problems. TP is surrounded by a large cairn. Best way to get to tp is from Shillmoor Farm via a grassy track.
sitting inside a circular shelter built from the remains of a huge BA cairn--great views all around--The Cheviot and the Milfield Basin
nice short steep walk up. troops on forced marches in the valley. hippies on voluntary wanders on the tops! not much litter now quite pleasant
vgc, bitmac plug, dullish tussocky summit, good view. 1st visited 03/01/1998
Tatty pillar, this must be a popular point for grops to visit, pillar is grafittied and there is a lot of litter about. Concrete plug replacement. Quite Urban looking, strange in the midst of a fine short hillwalk. As expected from its position, a good viewpoint for the main Cheviot ridge. No firing at Otterburn today.
drove along quiet road, climbed with only sheep for company, reached trig, discovered 5 Army men lurking inside the shelter wall doing some radio exercise. Most surprised !
No details noted - boggy top, fine location
In the middle of a large stone shelter. |
