TP6147 - Staincross Resr
Logged Visits:
Have driven passed this previously, but I contacted Yorkshire Water who have confirmed in writing that: The trig point was located on the top of an underground concrete storage tank and this tank was demolished in 1978.
had a good look round from the security fence but could see no sign of a trigpoint,on the plus side it had stopped raining with even the threat of some blue sky later.
Had a poke around. Big fence all the way round the area.
I'm going for deffinately missing on this but would like to throw in a possibility. I had a chat with a Yorkshire Water chap at Monk Bretton Resr who is quite positive there is no pillar at Staincross Resr but did mention that he was aware of a small piece of concrete which his explaination would put it in the correct place! Maybe someone living near to Barnsley might like to contact Yorkshire Water to arrange a visit?
As per other visitors I concluded that this pillar is definitely missing. The challenge on this one is to find a way up to the wasteland bordering the west of the reservoir compound. Keep your eyes peeled for gaps between the houses. I thought I had discovered what would have been the old trig base at one stage down a hollow on the wasteland but it turned out to be an old gatepost I think.
it used to be s1762
The reservoir is defended by a double metal fence with spiked palings and razor wire in between. There might just be enough of a gap to squeeze under the entrance gate on the north side, or else over the gate post, but I didn't try. Views from the gaps between houses on Moorland Avenue rule out most of the north embankment of the reservoir. From the woodland on the south side, there are various vantage points (the trees are easy to climb) which give coverage of the remaining sides and top of the reservoir. The horse's field to west of the wood gives adequate views of the auxilliary buildings - nothing there either. So if the trig was ever in the compound, I believe its gone now. Likewise, theres no sign of a base in the vicinity of the high point in the wood itself.
Agree with Morseman's log ... if its in the reservoir compound you cannot access it or see it as it is very secure and house-locked on three sides. Note: it is not shown on current OS maps either, however it is shown on an 1854 OS map (available from www.old-maps.co.uk) showing its position as OS Ref SE 32443 10670 which is on Staincross Hill in Staincross Plantation which is the wooded knoll 50yds to the South of the reservoir, today covered by graffiti ... but there's no trig point there today!
If the trig point exists, it's unreachable as it's inside the reservoir compound. |
