Cycled up track OK. Area in use for war games with men in armour carrying axes and bows!
Sadly the pillar is surrounded by used tyres which dot the surrounding area.
Drove up the bumpy track and parked next to the trig. Visited for a YSM geocache.
Revisit for photos. vgc, metal cap, deep letters. Walked up past pig arcs, although an easy drive-up as noted.
Got tired looking for this one
Came for this as it is also a YOSM. Drove up and parked right next to it for an easy log, quite a good view from this small hill, although as it was minus 5 C we quickly jumped back in the car.
Easy find just past farm buildings on right hand side of concrete track. Some patching up has been done to the side of the pillar and there are a lot of old tyres stacked against it.
We also drove and parked close to the trig and didn't see a soul. Also logged as YSM344.
This was the first of two YOSM locations visited today. I thought that they might be a bit tricky as neither was on, or even near, a public right of way. At best, I’d log them, at worst, I’d use the day as reconnaissance for a full camo dawn raid tomorrow. In the event, that wasn’t necessary. I stopped at the north end of the concrete farm road and had a good look around with binoculars. I couldn’t see anyone about so I drove right up to the pillar. If anybody else is contemplating doing the same in a normal car… watch out for the truly horrendous pot-holes in the road!! Not a particularly pleasant site, this. It’s an old wartime airfield that was, apparently, later used for Thor missiles. I suspect that casual visitors would not be welcome. The pillar is complete with all it’s metalwork although a couple of large chips in one edge have been repaired with some sort of filler. The centre plug is of the shallow indented type. No views to speak of unless piles of old car tyres float your boat.
Easy bag, as can be driven to directly. Looks like this was an old war time airfield, but later used in the cold war for Thor missile base. Closed only in 1963, see www.raf.mod.uk/bombercommand/s48b.html
you can drive straight up to this, nobody about today and no problems, trig as damage and crude repair to 1 edge
A miserable day for it on gikes. I agree with "elvi5uk" in the fact that visits wouldn't be encouraged.
In good condition next to farm buildings and accessible very concrete road. I doubt visits would be encouraged
