Must be the easiest trig to reach by car, you could drive right up to the side and touch it out the car window!
Parked at side of A970 by the entrance of the track leading directly to the pillar. An easy walk followed by a gate crossing brought me there, just in time to avoid the dreaded 12:00 log! FB faces ESE; all sightholes appear to be below ground level; original cap with thick raised letters. Superb views south towards Sumburgh Head as the sun moved towards its highest point in the sky for the day.
Nine miles or so of road walking brought me up here from my opportunistic camp site at Sandwick. The awesome scenery of South Shetland far eclipsed the rather grotty situation of the trig beside the water works. I then continued to the camping böd at Scatness, my place of rest for the night, with enough time to spare to make it up to the Sumburgh Head trig pillar whilst it was still light.
Very good views in most directions but Scottish Water buildings give shelter from the West but block view in that direction
As has been said it was an easy drive up to this one and there is a Scotish Water mound next to it
Walked from road rather than drive up to pillar. Thick mist so views non existant
Excellent - a drive by trig! We parked a few fet away. Not so good was the area was a building site and I'm surprised the builders didn't dump thier pile of earth over the trig! |
