TP7177 - Cat and Fiddle
Logged Visits:
Stop the press! - Traffic cone has gone and the FBM is now covered by a pile of rocks. I spoke to the Landlord he said cone kept blowing away, and then people keep driving into it! so a "cairn" seems to of done the trick - I carefully removed the rock, took my images and re-covered it. FBM is a bit knocked about, great views.
An FBM with a flush bracket. Combined with a stop at the pub. Passed here before without realising it was there, pillar is in carpark on the -West- side of the building
Visited with Wrose whilst out with our walking group
Out on a walk with my walking group - The Irregulars, LDWA - and we stopped her for lunch. So, the opportunity to make a visit was just too good to miss. Exactly as others have described.
Easy find on way back to car its in pub over spill car park dug out snow to expose fb first ever fbm with a fb no height tag its in fair condition but slight damage bet this ones done in plenty of cars undercarriages!
Typical Peak District winter's day... horizontal drizzle & 20ft visibility. Easy to find once as is the BM plate on the front wall of pub (G3602). My 200th trig in 2011 but pub was shut so no celebration beer...
Easy to find once you know where it is :-) Found the BM plate on the frontwall of pub first (G3602)
Poor thing. Half buried. But this is an iconic spot. Pity the owners of the pub cant venture out to clean up some of the crap in the car park. Still, I suppose I should be grateful I found it open. Winter hours are a little sparse to say the least.
Easy to find in the car park. Now has a Bank Holiday sign next to it
Logged on the way to Buxton to watch Chester. Game ended up Buxton 1 - 1 Chester.
I looked for this at the start of a walk to Shining Tor and Burbage Edge without success – located it on my return. I’d thought it was in the pub carpark – but it’s on the north side of the pub protected by two traffic cones.
A departure from my usual pillars as not shown on maps, but spotted this on website. Easy find as pictured on West side of pub. Partly buried, but protected by two stout wood blocks and cones. Also flush Bracket on the front of the pub no. G3602? Similarly, I spotted another in Macclesfield at the Puss in Boots pub by the canal no. 2715.
done
Easy find between bollards,Hailstorm held up photoes
Shame this is not logged, so could only log as could not find But this needs to be notified as this is an ideal half way point for walkers, a well known spot for Bikes and the views are great
Visited today.
Corner chipped off. Plate reads BM11174
Some kind soul has excavated some of the FBM
Good long distance views, near view of pub wall and mast less attractive. Nice and easy to find with its guardian cones. A "baby" trig as Shorty called it - luckily Extra Shorty didn't want to know how long it took to grow into the full size one. Beer calling.
Cheshire. It is protected by two cones in the small car park on the western side of the inn. There is no plaque, no plate and no height tag but, unusually for an FBM, there is a flush bracket. The flush bracket is half buried and we did not excavate as it was a dark and windy evening.
Been passed here so many times - finally realised there was a trig to log. Very dark and windy tonight - GPS was pulling me to the middle of the road!
Carrying on from Shining Tor. Busy on a Saturday afternoon
Visited during walk round upper Goyt valley.
tried hard to clear the fb but only managed half, came here just 3 weeks back armed with just the information that it's in the pub car park, what i did not allow for was the car park being under several feet of snow.
just a concrete block now, cant see the FB !
Parked at the Cat & Fiddle - Mobile Speed camera parked near the Pub today to catch the weekend Drivers - Bagged this before heading up to Shining Tor tried to dig out the FB Number but never managed it.
Visited after getting togged up for a walk up to Shining Tor in the fog.
Yes it is still there wating to be driven into. Flush bracket still visible barely above ground level. visited on bike ride taking in 3 shires head etc. Regularly passed en route , but 1st time ive stopped. now ive just got to find that one next the road nr macclesfield!
It took a moment to spot, due to it being half buried.
Parked right next to it to visit the "Rev up and riode out 2008" geocaching meeting, I was so close I could have easily banged the car door against it by accident!
A filthy day with visibility almost zero. FB plate half buried, and a log & rubbish on top of the concrete.
Brilliant sunny day with amazing views in all directions. Dropped in on this one on the way to visit Jodrell Bank with the boys.
Out caching with Deego who pointed this out to me
Visited as a driveby on the way home from Mam Tor. The Bench Mark has found a new use as a traffic bollard. Flash bracket is mostly submerged and a pool of water stop me reading the number.
Gravity station. Exposed location; minor damage to top. In between clouds.
A pint size pillar in a pub car park! Scraped away some mud to verify FB number, which even then was easier to feel than to read.
Now protected by little fence, fb no. now underground.
Gravity Base Station. Immediately to N of Cat & Fiddle RH. Slight damage to top of pillar. FB number hidden underwater! BM 514.42m on LandLine
1/3 Car parking area now chaned off so protective cone has gone to open to all the nasty element. WIND!!!!!!
Parked right next to this one for a trip down into the Goyt, round the Resvr and up to Shining Tor.
Now wearing the traffic cone as a hat. FB number submerged under water.
Protected by a traffic cone to stop vehicles driving into it. The flush bracket is partly buried so I didn't excavate it as it so cold with an icy wind chill. Locted on the Macclesfield side of the CAT & Fiddle PH.
Foggy ,usually good views.Re Visit to photograph10/09/06 Better views today!
This is on the left hand side of the pub. As all of the other photies show, this is marked by a large traffic cone held down by rocks, so it was rather difficult to read the FB. Lovely views as the sun was shining - last time we were here, it was a total white-out.
Walked past it a couple of times before we realised we were looking for a FBM. Cone still protecting it. (Will upload photos when we return home on the 21st August)
On north side of the pub, in the disabled carpark, with protective cone. Half baried by the hard-core. My first FBM
Protected by cones seems to be the idea - no obvious work being done in this car park
Just a note to say that, as I was passing by on the way to the Macclesfield game, there is much building work going on here and the FBM was completely surrounded by huge red plastic cones!!
How many times over the years must I have passed by this one without realising it was here?!
It is protected by a traffic cone. Or is that to stop cars/people damaging themselves?
Very easy to find in the car park, which is a great place to park before visiting the Cheshire/Staffordshire/Derbyshire border area. The pub also serves Old Tom, a fine ale.
Out with a group on motor bikes.Stopped at the Cat and Fiddle for refreshments
Gravity FBM, FB half-buried by newly laid roadstone
6/31 for the day. In the car park of the Cat & Fiddle pub!
Right in the middle of the disabled carpark of 'The Cat and Fiddle' - you could easily fall over it! Quite a Health and Safety issue, really! A few chips have come out of it. Excellent views, especially westwards. Incidentally, the pub is open all day.....
Don't get run over.
Needed a pink (of coke) after walking up to Shining. Great place for a pub.
On the cat and fiddle overflow carpark......... 13/11/03 revisit On the way from 3 shires head to Shining Tor. very misty but its not hard to spot!!! (1692ft)................. 26/02/05 revisit to photgraph
Our first FBM! We must have walked right past it so many times before as it's in the overspill carpark of the Cat and Fiddle pub. FB was underground when we arrived, but a bit of digging revealed the all-important number!
