Another visit to my local FBM to log its GPS coordinates
Found with aid of GPS.
found in the undergrowth. If it wasnt for a site like this you would never find it or know it was there
Large rhododendron and old metal fence closely uphill of it.
Plenty of veg' but not difficult to find
Hard to find FBM even with previous photos. Thick vegetation even in winter.
Good condition FBM with missing height plaque. Covered in moss, but quite easy to find with current vegetation levels. Iain's pics (the famed "lonely pine") made it easy to locate despite GPS being way out due to tree cover. Nice views (although better from the top of the hill....)
2nd time lucky, found easily using Iainmac pics although I only had a rough GR with me. Just inside felled fenced area - 1m NW of S corner. Was covered by bracken: trod on it. GPS was reading to 10m due to nearby tree cover, average of 3 readings (within +/-1m of each other) was NS 23973 77485.
Revisit during Royal Wedding 29-4-11 Up from my Pal Alans back garden.. very thorny this time o year! No height tag and covered in moss with the original ORDNANCE SURVEY BENCHMARK plaque opposite the 1999 one. Luvly view halfed by Iains lonesome pine... a nice marker to help find the cute wee beastie! :)
Found it first time. Not in undergrowth at present (winter) and relatively easy to locate thanks to the fencing and lone pine in iainmac's photos.
Found at second attempt, with OS sketch, not without some difficulty. GPS plate, blank height tab. See from the photos what it looked like before and after pruning. Was actually announcing to my son - This sketch doesn't make any sense - when I put my foot down on a log - which wasn't a log, but the FBM, totally covered with ivy & brambles. How we laughed...
Spent a lot of time in the rhododendrons and felled bits, and must have almost tripped over it. But i missed.
Tricky to find. |
