TP0889 - Arnside Knott
Logged Visits:
Today's visit was for International Earthcache Day.
I made a diversion off the M6 on the way home from Scotland and picked this trig at random to visit. I parked in the National Trust parking area at SD 4498 7738 and walked S along the track through two gates before turning left up the hillside and picking up the path towards the high point. Despite the persistent light rain it was a pleasant walk through an area which is much less forested than the 1:50k map would indicate! The pillar is painted in an odd off-white colour and is missing its cap. The FB, facing SW, is definitely not mounted straight! SW & SE sightholes open, others plugged. Sadly there were no real views today because of the drizzle but this is a very interesting corner of Cumbria as a drive through Arnside and along the B5282 eastwards showed me.
Views limited by the yew trees
Circular walk from Arnside. Clear sunny day, good views.
Grey mist all day, so the only reason to climb was the pillar. A pleasant if stiff climb, but no views today.
First day of snow
Parked in good layby near start of good path, glad of the shade afforded by woods going up.Trig painted white plug missing trees spoil views but are stunning at the edges. This was my 300 th trig!
Parked in lay-by on Arnside Road, just past Arnside Tower. Path up to trig is across road from lay-by.Weather not the best today, heavy showers, but views on way up and from trig, and view point excellent.Trig in great nick, apart from spider centre exposed. Is the FB a bit skew whiff?
Parked just before NT carpark and headed straight up. Lovely views over to the Kent viaduct.
Excellent condition and great views.
Climbed up to the trig on a nice sunny morning.
Nice walk up from the car park to the west. Beautiful views on a gloriously sunny afternoon.
great trig point
Lovely cold and bright sunny winters day. The view from the trig isnt great as the trees/bushes get in the way a bit. Moving around the hill plateau gets you far better views. Popular local site with lots of access routes, not all shown on the OS map. Came up the following day with my partner in crime and the view north was much better (although the weather was less bright). On a good day its probably a 9.
Deep snow and very misty so none of the fabled views but fantastic rime / hoar frost sculptures on the trees. The sun broke through as we walked round the estuary back to Arnside, extremely scenic cliff edge path and views over Morecambe Bay.
Westmorland. This is a great little hill with a super position giving views to the mountains of the Lake District and south over Morecambe Bay. There was a great sunset over the sea and good views to Blackpool Tower where the Strictly dancers were warming up for their performances in the ballroom. White painted pillar with plug missing.
Great little trot, enjoyed this one and the views.
Nice walk up with Raz (collie dog)fine day.
Nice walk up, the best views are to be had on the walk up and down, 100th English Marilyn.
worked way up from arnside house. Wife used to work there when it was an outward bound centre. Heavy rain today so know real views
Highly visible and easily accessible. Have been here many times previously on a variety of walks but this is the first return since I started playing the bagging game. Inumerable footpaths up to this wonderful vantage point. Pillar is in excellent condition and looks to be kept well maintained. Just a shame that the plug is missing. I don't suppose it is within the rules to take one from somewhere else and put it here to make it a perfect pillar. Views today were stunning - Lake District and sea on a lovely sunny clear blue sky day.
visited while geo-caching
Parked on NT car park and its a short walk up to trig
Tidily painted. Plug missing, otherwise vgc.
Stunning views from just below trees surrounding trig
Came here whist geocaching around Arnside prior to walking across Morecambe Bay
Plug missing, but pillar otherwise in good condition, and recently painted white. Lovely sunny afternoon with excellent views over to the snow-capped tops of the Lake District.
A regular walk for me but don't know date of my first visit,so this is the date of my first visit since starting logging trigpoints. Photo's from visit on 24/11/2011.
Trig point only has limited distant views; better viewpoint for the Lakeland Fells is the Mountain Indicator SD 452774. Lovely yew and pine woods though.
On a walk around the Knott which has everything a walk should have, But low enough for all A great day out
Misty day, no views. Nice location.
Views obscured by trees, there is at the moment a National Trust operation to try to reclaim some of the land on the summit back to grassland.
logging out of date sequence, forgot to log this one...
Weather dry clear and warm sunshine, Good distant views.
Best views are a couple of hundred metres to the west. Trees obscure the views from the trigpoint itself.
Easy walk up from National Trust car park.Good views over to Grange.
arnside tower was built late 14th century and occupied until late 17th century
Been here many times, great views over the Bay.
Trees blocked most of the views from the trigpoint, but enjoyed the walk up to it.
Walking Coast to Coast - the summit view is disappointing though the area itself is great. Just beginning to rain.
Found after bagging Arnside Knott geocache. Gleaming white paint so wouldn't like to search for this in snow!
Nice descent on the path slightly tricky ascent as I tried to go a more direct route. I was trying to line this up at 2000 but I ran out of time en route to a meeting and couldn't pick up the two I had in mind so 1998 it is
with Jamie day before trip to play-off semi with York v Morecombe FC
Not my first time up here, but worth yet another visit - will score 8 (at least) once the hillside is returned to grassland.
looks like people have climbed up on this one but doesn't seem to be damaging it.
Easy walk up nice location got very wet
Visited whilst on a walk from Eaves Wood. Brilliant views.
Views somewhat restricted in the heigt of summer. The wood has some excellent trees in it. A farmer was busy herding up his cows whcih had evidently escaped into the woods and decided to practice their climbing skills by ascending hte knott.
vgc, no cap or plug, pillar painted cream. Fine little hill full of interest, good view, even on a hot hazy day
A pleasant walk up and around. A good view and display from the W viewpoint
Easy walk up from the NT carpark. Pillar painted cream. Plug missing.
painted white, better views out of woods
cold little snow on ground but nice views
Good hill.bagged as a Marilyn. Nice trig.
Excellent Views - walked fron NT car park
Great place with good but limited views. Spotted a good many grey squirrels but no reds, also a few deer.
Good walk up to the trig, fantastic views over the bay. Trig climbed by the two younger members of the trig hunting team, whilst the older and less agile admired it from a respectable distance!
Nice place, Good for running. Was a red squirrel eating nuts that had been left on top of the trig
6/29 for the day. More great views - it has been a good day so far!
old log
Nice Accent, good views over to Lake District. Concreate Pillar, could with a lick of paint but otherwise in good condition.
Worth a visit, lovely views
Went up The Knott after watching the Arnside Bore. Nice spot.
A bracing Boxing day walk.
Visited to record FB number. The pillar was built in April 1949 costing £10.14s.6d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station SD47/T1 in the Barrow-in-Furness secondary block. Flush bracket S5406 was levelled for height in 1952. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in April 1976. Nice top.
Good weather scramble up limestone screes to stony top with pillar showing remnants of white paint. Views in some directions obscured by trees.
With Marion and Joseph.
Came up here from Lancaster to watch the sunrise on the solstice. Maybe not the best viewing point for that, but did ensure we could get up in reasonable light. |
