To Bampton for an outdoor opera (the weather held) so stayed over to explore W Oxon. Church of St Michael and All Angels, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott (of Midland Hotel St Pancras and many other more eminent and elaborate sites); built 1859 for £4,600 (including the vicarage). Rather plain Victorian interior but spire can be seen for miles around.
