(4147) Sutton Common BT Tower. Visible from some distance away. Interesting to learn of its 'cold war' history. A PRoW takes you right up to it, but I photographed and logged it from the A54 today.

Not a traditional trig pillar, but a tall concrete communications mast situated on the top of a steep hill with the most amazing views. A bit of a lung buster gradient if you walk up from Bosley junction, or you can cheat and drive up, but where's the satisfaction in that?! Beware, the PROW is currently overgrown and VERY muddy following heavy rain and snow fall, but it adds to the adventure!

The Sutton Common BT Tower (known on here as the Croker Hill Mast) was built back in 1963 as part of the 14 site "backbone" to the BT microwave network. The "backbone" was designed to keep communications open during a nuclear war.

Hill bagging day to get our 2015 hill count to over 100, drove to and bagged Weaver Hills trig, then onto Birchenough Hill (our 100th of the year), then onto Teggs Nose and Sutton Common (Croker Hill). Dismal weather until the end of the day when the sun finally came out. Nice views from this one.

An IS. There used to be a pillar nearby, destroyed. The mast is impressive, close up, in reinforced concrete. It was built as part of the 1950s 'Backbone' chain designed to provide the UK and NATO with survivable communications during nuclear war. So it was supposed to remain standing under the assault of a H Bomb blast wave. From how far away, I wonder? And who tested the concept? I'm glad it's still there!
