From the Rodney's Pillar car park near Criggion, took the forest track via Brimford Wood and 'the settlement', up to the top. The last section is a bit of a pull but not technical. Breidden Hill OS Trig Pillar a few meters from the top, the top dominated by Rodney's Pillar OS Intersected Station and monument. The pillar and monument are fenced off but there are a few little gaps. Lovely views around to the 'local hills' of Middletown Hill, Y Golfa and Stiperstones; and further away to the Welsh Border hills, The Wrekin and Snowdon. Descent via the steep path by White Well.

Parked on Criggion Lane. Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there up to the summit of Breidden Hill and the pillar, which is right next to the Rodneys Pillar Monument. The route involved a tough 300 metre climb, with a quite a few fallen trees that need to be negotiated along the way. Both the trig pillar and the Rodneys Pillar Monument are currently surrounded by metal railings, as restoration work is due to start on the monument. However, I simply crawled underneath a gap in the railings and managed to get my photographs that way.

The pillar stands on the edge of the rocky ground at the summit of a grassy hill to the north east of Welshpool. It was visited on a circular walk from Middletown Hill. Some of the ground was rather mushy in the bottom of the small valley between the hills. The trig is painted white, some of its edges are slightly battered and there is some minor graffiti scratched into the side of the pillar beneath its paintwork. It has a blank plastic cap and FB S4796. Rodney’s Pillar, a Grade II* listed 18th century commemorative column, stands close by. The summit was very windy and showers could be seen scuttling across the landscape. From the trig the Berwyn Range was partly covered in mist and the mountains on the southern edge of the Clwydian Range could just about be discerned to the north. The Shropshire Plain stretches out to the east with some of the hills of Staffordshire in the distance and The Wrekin to the south east. Middletown Hill, the Long Mountain, Corndon Hill, the Stiperstones, Long Mynd and the Kerry Hills could be seen to the south. From the other side of Rodney’s Pillar some of the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales were on view to the west. Plynlimon could be clearly seen from Middletown Hill but it was hidden by cloud by the time I reached the trig. Breidden Hill is designated a SSSI for its geology and its flora and there are ancient earthworks on both Breidden and Middletown Hills.

That hobby started as an excuse to get out of London where I lived and see the countryside, then take in a match, and this was one of those days. On my way to Llansantffraid to see TNS I saw this hill from a distance and decided to kill some time before the late afternoon kick off by climbing it. In 2020 I found the photos file of that afternoon, and can present the following image of the Trig Point! Close to Rodney's pillar - historic monument. Trig had complete metal insert on top of pedestal. (previous trigs for us have had this missing) View could be great but today there was cloud.

Above the Criggion communications base. Quite an interesting beast, to save on metal during wartime they used the hill as a mast for the big cables. It was a back up to Rugby. I was visiting as part of a round which involved also bagging Moel y Golfa, a marilyn, ands a fine one at that. The lower hill here is quite a ppular outing.

Rodney's Pillar. The hill was used as a mast for radio transmitters forming a duplicate for Rugby in WWII. Was also used for submarine communication since. A novel solution to a metal shortage. Visted along with the other two Breidden summits
