An exceptionally beautiful walk, the afternoon moving from stifling heat, to greyer and more humid and at sunset becoming clear and golden lit with a light coolness. From the small parking area by the reservoir down into the Musbury a sloppy beautiful water meadow then up the old quarry inclines. Down the wider track and lane from the Tor itself. Bumped into the annual run, a big thank you to the race official who replied "is this it" when I explained why I was wandering around with a frown (the pots of sweets to reward runners accidentally hiding the bolt). Stuck around to enjoy the sheer joy of being part of the place and until quiet returned. Views down to Longendale and Derbyshire, Bull Hill, Oswaldtwistle Moor, Pendle Hill and past Tod observatory into Yorkshire with Scout Moor opposite. I used to be intimidated by how recently scarred some of these western moors are but some of my favourite walking this year.

The beautiful hill itself.

2 inch bolt in isolated outcrop, easy find. On knoll overlooking Helmshore. From NNE, parked at Helmshore Mills textile museum, RoWs then mapped path. Also visited Tor Hill summit, impressive drystone wall but not quite a subtump. Grey cool morning

I don't visit many bolts but fancied a walk up Musbury Tor as it is such a spectacular place and decided to come and find this one. It is easy to locate and a great view, nice to find something up here I haven't seen before!

Visited for my 5000th BM, I hit all 25 planned BMs on way up & around the Trig Bolt area to make this my 5000th BM log on BMD. I alighted the 08.14 481 irwell line bus from Rawtenstall at Edenfield arriving Rawtenstall via 06.40 M1 & 07.45 X43 & made my way up from here. Another excellent day out on the £6.80 Lancashire Day ticket.

Exposed bolt, easy to find above small disused quarry. Walked up from Helmshore Mill - lane frozen today but could be a bit muddy in wet weather. Fine views
