Parked near houses on west side of road near crossroads of B3309 and B3311. Started off heading north west along footpath opposite crossroads. After about five hundred metres path turned south west and lost height, past a fallen tree across the path. Then path turned north west again and went past the quarry entrance. Looking at landscape behind the quarry was like another world. Wondered if the pillar had been swallowed by the quarry. Continued more or less north west, path twisted around a bit. About eight hundred metres beyond the quarry a tower on the hill to north east came into view. Tempted to try and cut across by a direct line but decided to stay on the path which continued north west then met a path running north east. Tower remained in view and at one point possibly caught a glimpse of the pillar. About twenty metres beyond the ridge was a stone stile to a path heading south east. Another four hundred metres or so to the pillar. Great views all around. Cap missing. Quite a long route to get here. Possibly a slightly shorter route from the north. Tower is an interesting feature, inside an inscription says restored 1960 (I think it said).

An early morning three mile walk to blow the cobwebs away. Straight out of the front door of our holiday home following local paths to Castle an Dinas - an iron age hill fort with views to Cornwalls north and south coasts. Rogers Tower, an 18th century folly sits on the second ring of the hill fort. It was a bit grey and drizzly but I was still able to make out St Michaels Mount just off the south coast. The trig point is sited a short distance from the tower. It is in generally good condition but the original centre for the spider is missing.

Parked at foot of bridle path adjacent to conifer plantation. Path very wet and muddy in lower sections due to the October rains. Steady uphill walk, through several bridle path gates, across the access track to the quarry then just as you start going down hill, turn R over a Cornish hedge wall by a wooden post. Steps inlaid into the wall. Follow to Pillar. Stupendous views all around, even on this showery day. Possibly one of the best viewpoints from a trig point in Cornwall, for West Penwith. Plug missing, sight holes open. Good view to St Michael's Mount from Rogers Tower.

Seriously questioning my understanding of access land here. Walked up bridleway to W of quarry, but it is a quagmire, and has been diverted away from the quarry by some distance. The quarry roads run through access land, but are completely fenced off, so no access from SW across Gulval Downs appears to be possible. After 1.7mls of paddling, came down the ROW from the N, and found the trig in vgc, all s/holes and centre both open, otherwise all ok. Interesting mini castle nearby as well, and excellent views in all directions, including both coasts. Decided not to repeat the grotty walk in, but instead to cross access land S of Trenowin Farm, and then down the track - only to be met by the lady who lives at the bottom of the track, who'd watched us coming down, and told us (very nicely) that we had been trespassing over her fields, and that the only way to the Tower was via the ROW from the N. As ever in such circumstances, we apologised profusely and left quietly, but looking at the latest OS 1:25k map on their website on our return, we never left access land! So how does it really work?!

Good marks for views and Rogers Tower. I parked at Trenowin Farm (492350), which has a shop and therefore a car park. I followed the track NNW then up to the cottage at 488353. An old boy who lives there then sent me the long way around a couple of fields of cows, but at least there was a footpath (as marked on 1:50000)! Great views from the top - a most pleasing summit. I came down more directly, still avoiding the cows, still following paths and ending up at a gate that I'd suggested to the old duffer might take me to my destination. Ah well! Bought cheese and lemonade from farm shop, whose owners were most disconcerted that I'd "abandoned" the car there!!

Returned directly through the quarry - no-one there on a Saturday. Pillar found in good condition but cap missing and no plug; all sight holes open, which gave the opportunity to photograph the 'nipple' directly beneath the centre cap. Very misty day so only short views to Rogers Tower and another ruined building. Rogers Tower, a Grade II listed Gothic-style folly built around 1798; repaired (looks like the roof was done) 1960.

The pillar stands inside a small hillfort on a moorland hill between Penzance and St Ives. The site was reached from Castle Gate in the southeast. The bridleway meandered its way around the quarry and was extremely squidgy for much of its route. The trig has FB S7864 and its spider lacks a cap or plug. Rain clouds were sat on the moorland hills of Penwith in the west and restricted the long distance views in other directions. Penzance and St Michael’s Mount could be seen in the south; Hayle and its Towans to the north and Carn Brea in the east. The site is within the West Penwith AONB. Rogers’ Tower is a Grade II 18th century folly built with granite rubble from the ramparts of the fort. Its diminutive size apparently intended to make the hill look bigger.
