PROW from road (opposite handy layby for parking) leads across long edge of trig field; generous field edge runs uphill to vicinity of trig, which is near the back end of the field, but is surrounded by crops. Field partially harvested at time of visit; the trig is in the un-harvested bit, but tractor lines make the pillar approachable without much trouble. Good condition; decent view of beautiful Dorset countryside.

About two miles south west of Piddlehinton, then about a hundred meters before the T junction on the left pulled over at gate entrance to field on south side of the road. Pillar not quite visible from the road. Over gate and headed for higher ground, past a couple of trees in field, pillar then comes into view. About four hundred meters into the field, another hundred meters or so beyond at tree line looks like a footpath as there were a couple walking their dog. Spider and cap in place. FB defaced. Partial views through light drizzle. Checking map after getting back to car noticed a TP near Godmanston. Slight change of plan to head there next.

All set for a trig-fest today with seven planned in bitterly cold, frosty, Siberian Dorset. Beautiful bright day with perfect visibility, not a cloud in the sky, but oh, that wind: absolutely spine-tinglingly freezing. This first trig of the day only took 10 minutes in total, with a quick jog up the field. Cap in place with deep indented lettering; one s/h open. Fine views back over to the Piddle Valley. And could see the Hardy Monument (not the author, but Nelson's officer).

The pillar is sited in an arable field with a grass like crop about 18 inches tall. Access to the field is from a bridleway with a handy layby to the north. Its foundations are exposed by about 9 inches; it has a metal cap with deep lettering and FB S5941. To the northeast is the green ridge of Buck Hill and College Down and the transmitter above Piddletrenthide. Lower rolling countryside stretches into the distance to the east; trees and fuel tanks block off the view to the south. In the west Crete Hill can be seen and there are power lines crossing some distant downs; the Hardy Monument can be seen in the distance in the southwest.
