Pillar history: Built on the 20th of February 1952, at a cost of £11 3s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1975. FB was S6833. Missing since around 2019?

Water compound now home to a new industrial building. Tried to gain access to look around but security guard said ‘no’ and also said it’s not there. Tried to gain access from nearby footpath but impossible. Unless by some miracle the builders saved it and relocated it somewhere out of sight I think it’s safe to say this one has gone.

On trip to Bedford helping son move back up home...job change. We enjoyed the challenge; we circled the reservoir area by the roads and found a way in to the site, OS map suggested the trig is on the W res on its E side. We felt very conscious of security and decided not to risk it, so hats off to all previous trig hunters who have bagged it. I feel if access details are given on this website in such situations accessibility could then compromised for others. I'm sure there is a 'way in'. Son suggested 'views; from Ivinghoe Beacon trig, so off we went. Bless him.

A surprise visit! Good legs today and a tail wind saw me down further to the East than anticipated. Enjoying a big icecream in the sunshine in Harrold-Odell Country Park it was a mad moment to do even more miles and bag this pillar. I had twice before circled the reservoir compound (once hurriedly), without catching any sight of the pillar. I was more determined (braver) this time and found my way to it.

Located within an Anglian Water compound. At the closest point to it outside the wire on Manton Lane it's not visible. But we did get sight of it from the car park of a local hotel along Brickhill Drive. Didn't try to access the compound being a week day and we had our 2 yr old grandson with us, didn't want to teach him the art of trespass at so tend an age! It's stuck up on top of one of the reservoirs and can be seen in my photo.

I was looking out at the sunshine and thinking what a lovely day it was when it suddenly got a whole lot better. A phone call from a gentleman at Anglian Water asking if I could get to the reservoir in the next hour. If I could, he’d take me up to the trigpoint. Persistence and patience had finally paid off. The pillar is in excellent condition with, as you’d expect in such a location, all it’s metalwork in place. The centre plug is one of the deeply engraved variety. As there aren’t too many hills around here, you can actually see for quite a long way when the view isn’t obstructed by buildings etc.. During my conversation with the gentleman, he told me that the reservoir that the pillar is located on has been empty for some time and is no longer used. That part of the site had actually been sold and may well be re-developed at some point. In which case, this pillar will almost certainly be lost. Photographs were taken with the kind permission of Anglian Water.

Having come home and looked at the other photo I think I may have been looking at the wrong angle.
