OS also lists 2 masts as components with the same Stn Number. No idea if any of the extant masts within the compound are those or not.

(1296) Nice walk down to the reservoir. Met a local out dog walking. He was familiar with this pillar, as well as others in the area, but couldn't help in regards to it's fate. "Most likely smashed up, I'd imagine." Checked around as much of the compound as I could, as well as around the track, but nothing pillar like in attendance. Nothing in the village either, though I didn't get chance to speak to anyone there. Caught a CBM on an old gatepost on the way back from the compound, so will accept that as a consolation prize. Pillar history: Built date not listed, cost recorded as being £11 4s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in January of 1986. Marked as destroyed in October 2008. FB was S1527.

I had a lovely walk after parking at Conisbrough Castle, using Common Lane and then the drive through the golf course. Followed PROWs to the compound. What a shame a primary pillar has been destroyed rather than relocated! Still this is one of my favourite Yorkshire views it really was nice to take in on foot rather than driving S on the M18. There are enough logs on here from trig legends for me to accept the pillar is not in the compound anymore and I did not find it nearby or in Clifton village either. A scorching day in South Yorkshire.

Some mixed comments felt the need to see for myself and wasn't content presuming destroyed. Definitely destroyed. Walked around inside of compound a good hour looking for any signs of pillar, not even a base to see. Sad day.

Climbed into compound. Walked about. Only then did I check my map to see I had previously wrote destroyed to one side. So annoyed.

On site of Doncaster and Clifton water service reservoir. Three masts of various styles and types are adjacent, two of which are interception stations (with the same station number as the pillar) together with an old trig (again same station number). Driven past this many times on the M18, as the masts are a very prominent feature on the skyline.

On a bike ride with my mate, Les '15 stone'. Approached area from public footpath on W side, map suggested NE corner of reservoir of S compound. Gained access to it by part of fencing near gate...put it back if you use it! No trig there but found possible base to it 10-12m E ish from gate.

Had a walk round the compound edge but saw nothing. Figured it must be near the new wee house and horse fields. Did go and ask for permission but the lady was concerned for her horse so I left. Now I know its gone for good. Hey ho. Was a good search all the same.

been several times before but never able to gain access,until today when i spotted a railing missing on the southern side of the fence.walked all round site but couldnt find it. when i saw a face looking at me through the fence near the paddock i knew it was time to abandon search.pity.

did a full circuit of the resr fence and no gaps or ways in found, pretty sure I could have got over the fence where it meets the stable fence but could not see away of getting out again, no sign of trigpoint and no cracked ribs.

visit to clifton this morning managed to gain access to reservoir but no sign of trig wonder if been removed when resent works was carried out?

Ouch. I have a cracked rib to show for this one. Having read the previous logs I first drove around the vilage to see if I could find it but no luck. Then I walked in along the public footpath with the fenced compound on my left and no trig nor gaps visible. Walked along the southern boundary fence but also saw no gaps. Could not walk the eastern fence as there was a man with his horse there. Retraced my steps. In one last attempt to see if the trig was still there I walked north of the mast compound and entered the paddock. Rather than climb over the fence I squeezed between the upper and lower fence rail. With front foot and body safely through I launched myself forward but caught my trailing leg on the rail and fell heavily onto my chest. I lay there unable to move for 5 mins then gingerly got to my feet. One week later I am still in a lot of discomfort with a sharp pain in the side which is no doubt a cracked rib. Dangerous hobby this! This was the first day of a weeks holiday and I was determined not the let it spoil my plans of walking in Northumberland. I climbed the mountains including hte Cheviot before eventually retiring hurt on the Thursday to give it a chance to heal. I did make it to the fence to take a photo of the lack of trig point. On returning to the village I asked around and was directed to a councillors house. He was helpful and knew what I was talking about but said it had not been moved to the village. He did direct me to the benchmark however.

A huge amount of work has been done inside the reservoir compound, it looks like a completely new reservoir and it appears that the work is still underway. There were piles of large excavated rocks and huge mounds of soil and earth inside that made it very difficult to see to the location of the pillar. It was either obscured by these mounds or it has been removed. It was a quick visit and the weather was awful so I didn'nt try to get in to the compound. It's only 20 miles from home so I may make a return visit.

Pillar on top of reservoir. Plug replaced by cover. Paint flaking. Reconstruction work underway on the S end of site but all quiet on a Sunday afternoon. Surrounded by trees so limited views. With thanks to Jon Rouse and Rob Woodall for the alert. [Note added 4 Jan 2007 after reading Trigbagger's log.] The compound is divided into two sections, roughly N and S. The pillar is towards the N edge of the N section. At the time of my visit in 2006, all work was in the S section. Theres a public footpath which passes the main entrance gate; careful inspection of the gate should (if its not been repaired) show the way in. Then go forward, with the perimeter fence to your left until reaching a flight of steps to the top of the reservoir and you should see the trig. One further point; Jon Rouse reported that the local village was interested in keeping the trig as a monument so maybe its moved? The area where the footpath joins the road, near a play area, would be worth a check).

vgc, plastic cap. On top of covered service resr towards NW corner, decent view. Revisited as I'd heard its days may be numbered. Sturdy fencing, but access proved surprisingly easy (helps if your smallest dimension is <450cm). Apparently trig was relocated onto resr when built 1950s

Passing through Edlington and came across a convoy of Yorkshire water vans, so i followed them to Clifton and managed to get to the pillar and photograph it. It seems they were surveying for a big redesign which would mean moving or even destroying the pillar. My pleas for clemency were heard but it may be another one down pretty soon!

Just visible sat on top of reservoir. Reckon you could just about climb over the gate but would require extreme caution.

In a fenced reservoir enclosure. I gained access following a protracted series of phone conversations with Yorkshire Water. I was met at the site by a Y.W. man who accompanied me to the pillar and allowed me to take photos. I have now heard (May 2006) from Richard Short of Ordnance Survey that Y.W. have sought permission to remove the pillar and this has been granted. I am attempting to establish contact with Y.W., before the pillar is destroyed, with a view to arranging for it to be re-erected in my back garden (cf TP5169). Non-visit log 16/08/2010 - checking my few logs on this site, I realised that this one needed a follow-up. My contact with Yorkshire Water in 2006 revealed that the local village of Clifton had expressed an interest in re-erecting the pillar as a feature somewhere in the village and I said that was perfectly OK by me but I did ask to be informed if the plan fell through so that I might be given the chance to re-erect it. I heard nothing further and so assumed that the pillar had been successfully re-located. A few years later, although I had by then given up active trig bagging, I decided to check with Yorkshire Water again. The lady I spoke to in 2006 was no longer with them and it took quite a lot of too-ing and fro-ing and hanging on before I managed to speak to someone who knew what I was talking about. Unfortunately, he was able to confirm only that (1) Clifton village had second thoughts and did not take the pillar after all and (2) somehow my request to be informed had got lost and so the pillar was DESTROYED which I found rather sad. The only small consolation we have is that at least we have my photos and those of Ted Allwood and Dave Woffenden to show us what the pillar looked like before its demise.

Inside the resevoir grounds, but at the time of our visit some of the palissade fencing on the opposite side to the gate was loose, allowing you to squeeze in if you were skinny enough. Neither of us were but my brother visited a couple of weeks earlier and through having a more sylph like figure managed to get to the trig and record its number as S1527. This agrees with OS 1994 list.
