Parked in small car park to east of hill . Gentle climb to top where monument located. Unfortunately didn’t realise there was a bolt until reading other logs on here afterwards. Excellent views all around although a bit hazy at the time. Monument in memory of the first wife of the one time leader of the Liberal Party and MP for the area, Jeremy Thorpe.

Non-(re)visit log: there is supposed to be a Bolt there, at 258240.906, 129563.313 according to the OS trig archive, also a Centre (presumably the centre of the monument) at 258238.547 129564.359 Sounds like the Bolt is 2.58m ESE of the centre of the monument, but is a new bolt not the old trig base (which was at 258238.984 129563.898, i.e. 0.63m SE of centre of monument). Judging by the size of the monument it will have put paid to any trace of trig / base.

There's a monument at the top of the hill, but no sign of the trig. According to an inscription on the base of the monument, it's 629 feet up. Excellent views all around, of Barnstaple, Landkey, Dartmoor, Hartland Point, Lundy and (dare I say it) a disused quarry! I parked in a layby on the road south of the hill and headed up via a permissive path opposite the road down to Horswell Farm.

We new the trig wouldn't be there but fancied the walk up this fine hill. Contrary to what Hollowig says there is a very good track from the east opposite the minor road that goes to Downrew Farm. The trig has been replaced by a monument to Caroline Thorpe who died in 1970 aged 32. She was the wife of Jeremy Thorpe (ex leader of the Liberal Party) and lived nearby at Cobbaton. It's a fine monument and much visited by locals so right of access is no problem. The monument was erected in 1971, the same year as the trig was destroyed so presumably it was on the same spot. The OS list the FB no as S5317. Excellent views.

My OS map doesn't have a trig at this location, but ok, we'll accept it's up there - except up there didn't look easy through the gorse ... so I'll never know for sure, unless I go back (or someone else goes up there).

This would keep goats out ! I guess the pillar may be up in that somewhere.
