About three quarters of a mile north of the A3054, through Cranmore residential area, slightly uphill, was a small area to park bike. Footpaths and tracks going in four directions. First idea was to follow track north east and to try cutting back west beyond the properties. After about a hundred and fifty meters began to lose height and still no obvious way through. Back to parking spot then followed track west almost like a driveway to properties. Rutted and a bit muddy. After about fifty meters or so , last property is a static mobile home with children’s toys and garden furniture lying around. Kept as wide of this as possible but had to walk through the ‘garden’ to get to the trees beyond. Then turned east. Spotted pillar in amongst trees a few metres further on. No views although the Solent is just visible through the trees and probably had a good view at one time. Spider and cap in place. Back at my bike, a friendly elderly gentleman was walking past and stopped for a chat. He went off towards the direction I had just come from, possibly the same person mentioned in previous logs.

Bagged this while walking the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. The pillar is situated out the back of residential properties on the North-West branch of the Cranmore Ave / Sea View Road crossroads. Luckily, one of the house occupants was putting her bin out, so I just asked her how to get to the pillar. She was really helpful and walked me round the side of the houses to show me where the Trig was out the back. While I was faffing about at the pillar she even went to get me a glass of water and an ice-cream ! The pillar itself is at the edge of a mature woodland and becoming somewhat moss covered.

Lady most obliging and being concerned for my legs in the nettles, allowed me access thru' her cowshed. Trig easy to find in sparse wood (thank you God) and did not look to be in any danger of falling off a cliff to me.

Have had to say that I could not reach this one the best I achieved was getting to within about 150 metres of its plotted location. I should have read some of the earlier logs before making my attempt. However wherever I went was blocked off with impenetrable undregrowth, no access and locked gate. Normally I would return with the additional information that I have now acquired but am unlikely to ever be on the Isle of Wight again and by logging this one as an attempt I will have completed all the IOW listed.

My final pillar on the IOW and was hoping that it would be straightforward....not! Having driven to the top of Cranmore Road I thought it would be easy. Now must offer thanks to mickandshanes log, absolutely spot on. I visited Halcyon and the gentleman there said it was fine for me to go and visit (GPS was showing 0.08 so knew I was close!!) met a lady in a car just up track who apparentely lived in the caravan but after I explained that I had already asked and smiled nicely(well as good as I can muster!) she was fine and pointed me in the right direction.Pillar in brambles and has views of the Solent through the trees. Given the proximity to accomodation I think it best to ask and not upset the residents especially as they are absolutely fine with people visiting.

(147) My last one on the Isle of Wight, after trying to fall off the side of a cliff, I decided to try the easy option and ask the chap in the house if i could have a look. That resulted in a 30 minute explanation of trigpoints. Anyway it's still there and quite a way from the cliff edge so should last for some time to come.

We parked at the top of Cranmore Avenue, the unadopted road that heads up to the coastal path. We searched to the east and west and couldn't find it as kevjtrig says. In the end we went up the drive, which goes off diagonally where the coastal path turns the corner, to the two houses (Halcyon and The Heights). The chap in the house to the left was in his garden and was very helpful, taking us to the trig. He said that he had lived there three years and that there had been no slips in that time. The trig is a couple of metres back from the edge so might be OK for a while yet. Good views over the Solent. Plug replaced with some sort of metal insert.
