This one wasn’t any fun to get to. Managed to take the steepest route up, muddy, but the sticky kind, so made it up unscathed. Decided to come down the other side, on what appeared to be a more gentle slope. It was, but was covered in the slippy kind of mud! I definitely wouldn’t recommend a winter visit!

Parked beside entrance to bridleway on north side of minor road about two miles west of Shaftesbury. First couple of hundred metres on good surface then through gate into field and uphill towards woods. Field like a wet sponge, very squelchy. Through gate into woods, continued uphill, muddy wet path, fairly steep and a bit slippery. At top, path bears left. Seems like you’re at the top but path drops down and then rises again, past a bench looking out over the countryside, pillar almost at end of woods beyond which there is a gate. Views lost as trees have all grown up. Sadly defaced FB. Cap plugged with tarmac. Glimpses through clearings, Purbecks possibly visible to south. Used 1966 O.S. Sheet 166 to locate this.

Attempting this pillar straight after Melbury Hill might not have been my wisest decision! Parked in the free car park to the west and followed the Oak Leaf trail (yellow arrows) across a grassy plantation and into the wood, at which point the trail went up, an up, and up some more. Path almost becomes a ridge near the top, with drops to either side, although the trees disguise this fairly well. After a short rest on a small bench, the final few metres' climb revealed the trig behind a gate in a collapsed fence. There are a couple of viewing points further on, but what should be a magnificent view is rather restricted by the trees. Still, the glimpse you do get is impressive, and the summit is a very tranquil spot when no-one's around. Spent some time at the top just enjoying the area whilst I got my breath back and readied myself for the descent.

A memorial area has been created between here and the hill, with newly planted trees, a large (2m high and same wide) roughly hewn stone with memorial plaque, new fencing/gates/drainage ditches. Should be a higher score for this trig given its location at the summit of a steep and prominent hill - with a 96m drop it just falls short of being a HuMP (but can be bagged as a subHuMP). The path to the summit is steep, muddy and not easily negotiated - and descending is even trickier! The pillar is in good condition; sight holes have all been sealed although one is opening up; cap replaced by asphalt plug. Unfortunately what should be a superb viewpoint has scrubby trees growing ever taller and obscuring almost all of the views.
