Parked roadside to SSW, where the road has been closed (NS 2361 7232). Steep scrubby woodland first, skirted SE to avoid the escarpment, the straight up over steep moorland pasture. Pillar sits at top of the hill of the same name. There is some structural damage to the vertical edges - missing chuncks of concrete - and some top screed is missing. Cantre cap also missing, tube sealed with an asphalt plug; L & RHD side sight holes open. Extensive panoramic views.

Pathed route all the way up from the visitor centre. Capped filled in with concrete. Signs of chips and cracks on the pillar. Nice views of the firth of Clyde once more.

From Shiellhill Farm about a quarter of a mile west of Cornalees visitor centre and car park. Through gate on footpath at first but no way across the small burn on the north of the path. Tempted to leap or wade across but decided to go back to farm and through a couple of gates to the other side of the burn. Ground like a wet sponge. Past a few sheep and over to the west of the ditch. Then north directly uphill. Mostly rough pasture and grassy tufts. After about five hundred metres, through a gate and past a hut. Crows circling noisily overhead. Grim sight of a sheep with legs skyward. Possibly lost it’s footing. Continued uphill, found a route through the gorse then just grass but increasingly steep. A few vertical rocky outcrops but last part of ascent was from south east and grass. Over the crest then pillar in view. Woohoo. A couple of hundred metres further across the flat top. Pillar on a raised area of ground. Very exposed. A strong wind at the time but must be occasions when it wouldn’t be possible to stand here. Marvellous at round views. Another big McWow. Slow hit rate today but worthwhile effort. Slightly chipped on one edge. Nobody about at farm to report dead livestock after descent.

A beautiful day with strong sunshine and strong wind (24.6mph) Temp. at Cornalees center Approx 23 C. Followed the gravel road past Loch Thom then up Scroggy Bank past the phone towers. At end of road followed track up to trig. View was good but there was Haze over Bute

Log #477. Parked at visitor centre, then followed route suggested by member of staff: straight up alongside fence to bealach between East Hill and Hillside Hill, then over the style to Dunrod Hill. Picked up the track to the north, then back to the visitor centre via the masts by Scroggy Back. [ExP-319/MiP-38/Rev-6/BM-39/IS-50/Other-25]

Followed fenceline on unmapped footpath to NS242725 then partial bogtrot to summit. Pillar in fair condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces NE, ~46°. Vented through NW sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view from top.

Visit this one on a clear day. The views up the Firth of Clyde and north are just jaw-dropping. FB faces north-ish, west-ish sighthole open only (which was stuffed with some plastic today). Cap missing with asphalt plug present. A chunk has been knocked out the SW edge around knee height. Good intervisibility to Corlick Hill, Banks, Blood Moss amongst others. The Knock also visible in beautiful silhouette. Came up from Cornalees Visitor Centre car park directly up the path between this summit and one next door with the cairn on it. The visitor centre has a great exhibition on the Greenock Cut on at the moment which is worth a visit in itself. Even saw a submarine gliding up the firth.....

Cap filled, spider vandalised, West sight still open.. but SouthWest chunk kicked out. A truly Classic Clydeview. I thought nearby Banks was boggy - but this little fellows shoulders have spagnum marsh like no other! Sheesh! The Cairn, 431metres to the East is higher :)

Visited after doing the Greenock cut walk. A short steep wee climb up from Cornalees visitor centre. Breathtaking views of the sea stretching out to Arran and also of the mouth of Loch Long across the Firth Of Clyde with the Arrochar Alps and Cowal hills towering over the skyline. A lovely spot on a sunny day.

Visited to record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 3rd October 1948 costing £17.15s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NS29/28 within the Greenock block during 1952. Levelled for height also in 1952. Last maintained by the OS in September 1978. SITE VISIT: Pillar in fair condition. Spider is plugged with cement, original OS centre cap being long gone. Spectacular northerly aspect.
