Parked by cattle grid at Thursley to north east of pillar. Followed the Pennine bridleway south, for about a kilometre, gaining height for first section. Reached a signpost and was expecting to find a footpath heading north west. It wasn’t obvious. Went on instinct and headed towards hill to west however it was quite a challenge as there was a drop down to a wet marshy area then steep climb up. Reached a dry stone wall, cattle were grazing by the gate to the south so managed to find a section of broken wall to get over from where the pillar was then visible to west. Spider and cap in place. Headed north east down field on way back, discovered a metal kissing gate but that was the only evidence of any footpath. Through swampy ground and tall grass, a couple of ridges to get over before regaining the bridleway. Good effort.

Starting from Halifax Rd near the Herd House Holiday Homes, I followed various PRoWs (some of which clearly haven't been used much). The route took me down to Thursden Brook, over a bridge then up onto Extwistle Moor. Diverted off the path heading SE to the pillar which is in excellent condition. Very muddy surrounding but some slabs strewn which make useful stepping stones. Headed towards the Quarry and made me way to the PRoW near Swinden Reservoirs. Extwistle Hill trig next

Parked just after the cattle grid at the south end of Ridehalgh Lane and started walking up the Pennine Bridleway. On reaching Coal Pit Pasture I left the Bridleway and made a beeline for the pillar. That turned out to be over a lot of soggy ground including a vicious bog. A gate is sited in the right place to give access to Delf Hill and drier ground. Couldn't find the nearby cairn circle but someone had created a motorbike circuit around the pillar. Great day to be on the hills with sounds echoing from down in the valley. With lovely sunshine and no wind, it was hard to believe that a lot of the UK was being battered by Storm Babet. Shared the pastures with a herd of Belted Galloways, which was nice

Approached from the Widdop Road via the ROW at Rapes Clough, as The Hungry Caterpillars say the OS mapping is inaccurate. The ROW forks approx 1/2 mile from the road however there is no path veering NW to the field corner (as indicated on the map). The path heading SW appears to lose a lot of height with a hefty re-climb needed. The options are - where the ROW 'forks' on the map is a broken wall, walk a further 25 yards of so to reach the crest of the rise - directly ahead you can see a field wall with a 'gate' - the trig is 50 yards behind that - you can A): Hoik straight across the open moor to the gate - wouldn't recommend it myself, you'll know why when you view it. B): Head across the open moor in a NW direction aiming for the stile in the field corner (which you can't see at this point) - wouldn't recommend that either or C): return to the broken wall and follow it north, on it's eastern side, along a sheep trail to reach the full wall south of Reive Edge, turn left (west) and follow the wall along more sheep trails to reach the stile in the field corner slighly NE of the trig - it's boggy in places but it's much better than the open moor. The field the trig is in is easy enough to traverse. After all that waffle, it wasn't a good day weather wise - visibility was poor but it was a good hike up from (and returning to) Hebden Bridge. Working on the local trigs. Overcast with good views. A classic motorcycle trial was running nearby, some old quality machines on view.

This trig seems to me to epitomise the best aspects of trigpointing. Against any objective criteria you would not come up with Extwistle Moor - it is off the main Pennine chain, there are higher tops near by, and the trig isn't even on the highest point. However, it was just a first-class stroll from the road at Widdop - I had the moors to myself. The day had started grim, but improved to sunshine and showers. Fortunately the shower was over Hoof Stone Heights, and I had the sun. The trig is in great condition, although the paint is getting a little faded. The plug is intact. And the views are excellent, with Pendle, Lad Law, Ingelborough, Pen-y-ghent and Great Whernside, along with other closer hills to admire.

Nice and lonely here off the beaten track. The nearby "cairn circle" is a bit of a disappointment, just a few assorted stones in a haphazard ring.

The paths on the map are not representative of what you may have to contend with, even more so in wet and cold conditions.Fairly extensive views were marred by quarries and 4x4 tracks.27.04.04update-yes my mistake-flush bracket number is S4504.
