Parked in the village of Burcombe then walked up the farm track footpath, fairly gentle climb, past the pig farm. Before sunrise so most of them were still asleep. After about a mile or so north of the road, footpath bears left into woods. At this point stayed on field boundary to west of woods, hoping to see pillar in field to east standing out against the brightening eastern sky. Continued to north edge of field, then east. Even crossed through the woods to north of the field to get to field on the other side. With a bit of help from here decided to head south along east edge of first field. After about a hundred metres south of the tree line and after losing a little height spotted pillar next to a couple of telegraph poles with vegetation grown up around hence reason pillar not easy to spot in early morning pre dawn light. Lovely frosty morning, clear sky, moon just past full. Had torch to illuminate FB.

OS1:25k map also shows it sited on the course of Grim's Ditch of which there is no evidence on the ground and no information, for these particular earthworks, available via google. Pillar is in good condition, original cap in place; 1 sight hole open. Good views S to Compton Down, all other directions obscured by woods, field boundary hedges etc.

Situated close to Grovely Wood on the edge of a field with a new crop just emerging. The pillar has a metal cap with shallow lettering and has FB S2207. The site was reached by a short circular walk from Great Wishford. Hadden and Heath Hills gave a good view over the Wylye Valley to the downs beyond. Grovely Wood was full of bird song and it has an impressive avenue of mature trees along its ridge; the Grim’s Ditch earthwork was followed for part of the way. The trig itself only offers a reasonable view to the southwest of several hazy downland spurs and ridges up the Nadder Valley, including Crouch Down and Wick Ball Camp. The top of the ridge of Bishopstone Down can be seen above the trees that are on the southern boundary of the field. Grovely Wood is nearby to the north and the avenue of trees heading towards Wilton is to the east.

We retraced our way back to the Second Broad Drove, a Roman Road, from Grovely Castle. We followed this east past Grovely Lodge and onto First Broad Drove. At times the path is tarmac and at others just a path through the woods. The tarmac bit has no traffic as there are gates, and is very pleasant, with mature trees forming an avenue on either side. We eventually took the footpath south at Heath Wood and then followed Grims Ditch to the field with the trig. The trig is justinside the field to the west of the hedge with the FB facing east. Plug with indented lettering.
