Nice wander over from Walney nature reserve in the rather moist dull autumnal weather. Pillar located next to a wooden tower of some sort and an old fire beacon. Can see Piel Island castle through the mist. Pillar has had quite a bit chipped off the top exposing the spider but it still does have its original cap.

Some damage to the top screed with two spider-ends exposed but the pillar is otherwise OK. Breezy day; pleasant walk along the shore - apart from the motorbikes.

The second of the two Walney trigs. Parked up at bend in the road before it passes through the caravan site. Walked along the Coastal Path along the inner shoreline with nice views over towards Piel Castle before cutting across to the outer shoreline and up to beacon with the the pillar beside. Bit breezy so returned along the road through the caravans back to the car. Stopped off at the remote Queens Inn at Biggar on our way back to the mainland.

Parked at Snab Point and walked via farm track to this. Shares site with a old shipping marker and beacon. Low cliff. Returned along coast to South Walney Lighthouse and back along track before wet weather closed in.

The "England Coast Path" will take you around Walney Island and is exceptionally well signed. Goes past this pillar and onto the nature reserve (protected site of only grey seal colony in Cumbria). Best visit Walney on a sunny day and when the tide is in. Piel Island beckons....must go soon and visit the newly appointed King. Gifted to Stagecoach for recruiting more women to drive their buses in Cumbria. Adds a bit of glamour to the journey.

Spider top has cement fragments missing. A metal statue/structure hides the pillar.Farmer harvests the field alongside the cliff and cows graze next to the beach. How bizarre! Coastal erosion puts this trig at risk. Get there in the next 50years!

Parked on a beach access car park to the south and strolled up.. On a crumbling cliff edge next to a strange disused beacon/pylon. Used the pillar as a camera rest for some zoomed in photos. Blackpool Tower with a ship in the foreground; across Morecambe Bay to Heysham with Walney Lighthouse in the foreground; the banks of wind turbines out to sea and my favourite-Ingleborough appearing behind Piel Island Castle.Sat on the cliff edge soaking up the sunshine and then walked down to the sand and the sea. Lovely

Knocked on the lodge door to ask permission to visit the trig,The guy said it was ok but to walk round to the path lower down.Liked this one unusual comms mast as well trig has damage to top but retains cap nice seascape views.

Revisit for photographs and GPS reading. Open coastal top which is gradually falling into sea. Pillar in fair condition, top screed badly depleted. Spider retains OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~145°. Vented through SW sight hole. 360° open outlook from top. Disused mast alongside pillar may have been an old navigation beacon.

Parked outside Far South End which seems to have been renovated and is now occupied as a private residence. Short walk over sheep pasture to trig, co-located with odd looking lattice tower. Pillar has substantial portion of the top screed missing; original cap in place, indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. Good 360deg sea and landscape views.

A new and very occupied cottage has appeared next to derelict farmhouse with accompanying `private` notices ... Parked 100 further south and walked onto and up the beach then climbed short but steep sea wall to access ... ok views

Pleasant enough spot with decent views but marred by the adjacent mast. Access from south along a cliff edge path from Pho Hill and carries on north to pass South End farm, (my old map shows 3 fields but actually it's now one large one) to give access to a rutted track that leads to join the road at Wylock Marsh. Access also available just below the old derelict farm where the map shows a track leading to the shore, at this piont the old walls have gone and it's now open field.

Easy access from the open ground to the south. No way through the ruined farm any longer - its fenced off. Much of the top concrete is crumbling and one leg of the spider is more or less exposed. Nice views along the coast, but the pillar is rather overshadowed by the adjacent rusting tower

We parked near South End Farm (a ruin), and walked over open sheep pasture to the pillar. Next to a sea mark it has good views of the wind turbines in Morecambe Bay. The top screed is coming away - hence slightly damaged. Plug with indented lettering.

Approached from east, parking by Scar End Point and following mapped tracks. Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed in April 1949 costing £7.0s.3d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station SD47/17 in the Barrow-in-Furness block. Flush bracket S5375 was levelled for height in 1968. This marker was last maintained by the OS in October 1976. Spider retained original OS centre plug with shallow engraved letters, 12/09/1990. No photos taken.
