Diverted off the A1 to grab a couple of trigs in the Castleford area, having ticked off the awkward Holmfield we moved on to this one that looked quite promising on the map. Parked up in Hawthorn Ave and followed the FP through the iron fencing. The route through the woods and old quarry popped out on the quarry track which we followed the short distance until googlemaps indicated we were alongside the pillar. I clambered up the steep muddy brambly slope until I came out onto the farm track which OI could see joined the quarry track a few yards further on. More of less where I joined the farm track was a field gate with the pillar nestled in another bramble patch a few feet away. Not much to see, possible views to the west, but the sun was setting and I could see nothing through the glare. Retraced our steps back to the car and finished off with a pint at The Junction Hotel in Castleford. This should have been a pleasant walk, but the muddy paths, overgrown brambles, what looked like discarded asbestos roofing panels and the now ubiquitous dog shit bags made it quite an unappealing walk.

Pleased it was the middle of winter for my visit. Just performing the acrobatics to take a pic of the FB was eye watering. We grow cracking brambles in Yorkshire and there is some real beasts surrounding this one! More or less the same route from Hawthorne Ave, but also crossed a couple of pony paddocks, minus the ponies. Aim for the telegraph pole on the hill and you can't go wrong.

Parked on Hawthorne Ave and took the PRoW into the woods. The path takes you to an open area (former quarry?) and from here you have to leave the PRoW and head up the muddy track which has tractor marks on it. Keep going till you see what looks like a path going back on yourself up the hill. the trig is nestled at the top of said hill nestled in the trees. It's a good location, And it overlooks Holywell Farm to the north. I headed back down the hill and continued to the farm which had an easily navigable barrier (albeit with a private land sign facing the way i was heading. Therefore suggesting the pillar is on private lane.

To the northwest, there is a clear access track, high banked, curving west and passing a blue shipping container. The track then heads upwards to the highest point, before gently dipping away down to the farm. As per previous logs, I knew the pillar sits beneath a telegraph pole, and this was quickly visible ahead. A quick scrabble up the bank and the pillar is there, a few meters from a paddock gate. It's in fair condition, a bit battered with a replacement cap and with evidence of previous gardening efforts in the surrounding thicket. Not much in the way of views - Xscape/J32 are just about visible. I expected this one to be tricky to get to, but there's no need to cross any paddock/field, no crop or livestock to disturb, and you're not even in sight of the farm when on approach or at the trig. I do agree with everyone else who says this is definitely not a pillar to visit in summer!

Tbh didn't feel all that comfortable up there so probably best just to assume that its inaccessibility will probably protect it into the long term.

3 of 4 on hot day moseying round Castleford and Pontefract. Came from the E via paths which went past quarries, still worked, though which were public FP's wasn't clear. I asked at the Holywell Farm and was readily given permission and advice from a farmworker who resembled Ed Sheeran. He'd walked up past the trig last week and said it was difficult to see, let alone get to with the bramble. I walked NE up the wide quarry track, underneath a first set of power cables, then forked right up a smaller track which leads to a field. On the right, before the field, is the second pole of smaller power cables. The trig is right next to the pole restraining cable, just visible from the path. I managed to scramble through the bramble and bushes from the field further up the path, climbing over the fence near some baths, water for horses. It's painted white. On to Castleford for a sarnie and then to trig 4, way out W at Tingley via Pontefract.

Depends on your idea of a view. Can see a long way but can also see Freeport and Escape not to mention the traffic on the M62. Very muddy underfoot. I came down the footpath to the east and walked along the tracks. No 4x4 or dogs

I tried the route recommended by mickandshane and Mac.Hawk but instead of 4x4s it was a pack of dogs that made me turn back. Instead, I walked west along the main road and tried to find the other FP in from the west that is marked on my map but it is non existant. Instead I ended up hopping over some fences, bagging the trig then coming back along the farm track.

We took the footpath from Hawthorne Avenue, and then dodged the 4x4s to get to the trig - the place was very busy on a bank holiday Sunday. Plug replaced with plastic/metal insert.

1st of todays 4 trigs on a 15 mile circular hike from Ponte Railaway Station. Not too difficult to find in the old quarry that's used by 4x4ers and quad bikers at the weekends. Just headed for what seemed to be the crest of the area and found it right next to the wooden telegraph pole. Quarry very muddy today. ROW at the NE is down at the bottom of Hawthorne Avenue, follow the path to the wide tracks and go right. There's a view of sorts towards Glasshoughton retail centre.
