Not our first choice of pillars today, but with the weather a lot duller and wetter than forecast decided to keep ‘better’ options (eg Binny Craig) for a better day. This one is very simple to get to but nothing exceptional about it.

My daughter recently moved to Kirkliston and this is an easy walk up the B800 passing under the railway and motorway and a number of enclosed safe dog walking areas to the good track heading west along the edge of wooded area around Dundas Loch to where 2 fields met at NT113760. The trig was easily found in amongst remnants of a hawthorn hedge 200m south along the field edge. Not the best day for views etc but pillar in good condition with centre cap in place.

Cycled from Dalmeny, through South Queensferry, then south west through Westfield and Swineburn, then east past the reservoir then along the lane towards Humbie Farm. At hedge line running north between fields on foot to almost the top. Pillar quite well hidden from distant view and on approach by vegetation. On uneven ground. Good views towards the Pentland Hills and south west. Open field to the north. Back to Dalmeny east along lane then walked through field below motorway embankment, adventure but slightly shorter.

Then up from the south along the field boundary to find the pillar which retains its cap with shallow lettering, one sight-hole open, and another pierced. About 20 minutes in all.

Plenty of room at the field boundary despite the field not yet being cropped. Interesting home made signs recommending the use of a stick waved above your head to ward off over-protective buzzards.
