Plenty of parking at Rough Castles, no forestry work atm, followed track through forest, took first path on right, continue up, till a stone in middle of path where there is a path left going through the woods, easy to follow, keep following till you pick up another path to the right which leads directly to the top - dry, sunny, cold wind, superb views.

Every single tree from Rough Castles west to the power lines has been felled, and they lie stacked in huge piles along the length of the track. A walk I've done countless times is utterly different! With 'Yaffle'. ~~ 19/02/22 Annual pilgrimage, with Simon Rushton. ~~ 12/08/21 With my cousin Jeff & his wife Jo visiting from the Midlands, me playing 'tourist guide' for the afternoon, they wanted a walk with views, couldn't think of one better ~~ 19/02/21 First visit to Long Crag for Storm. Followed the same route as slateloose from the lay-by near Rough Castles. The scale of Storm Arwen devastation suffered by Thrunton Woods really becomes apparent when you’re walking through it. It was rather a slog up the forest road but became more pleasant when we entered the woods and reached the moorland paths. Was really impressed with the views towards Simonside and the Cheviots from the trig. Good to get this one in the bag as I’ve been keen to bag it for a long while :-)

I waited a long time to bag this one due to the devastation of another Storm Arwen affected area. Parked at the usual area for woodland walks and planned a 9 mile walk with my dogs. All was going well until I reached somewhere around NU 07917 07597 where the path was closed over the FB with a stop sign and barriers. I turned around and re attempted at NU 07304 07773 which was open and followed the burn to get to a steep path to head left for the trig. Amazing views. The access will hopefully improve/open in the future. Spider missing.
