Driving down the A1 so made a small diversion to grab this trig. Weather wasn't great so decided to drive as far up the lane as I could and parked in the grassy field entrance. Simply followed the field edge up to the highest point. Couldn't see the pillar so carried on a little until a gap in the hedge allowed me through to the adjacent field where, not far back was the pillar. Nothing special, so retraced my steps back to the car.

Left the car in a layby close to the windmill on the B1164 Great North Road. A 3.12 miles out and back route took me through the pretty village of West Markham. Here I called at Manor Farm to ask permission and the landowner very happily granted it and confirmed that my route was the best. I was treated to the sight of a young roe deer running through the trig field just as I reached it. Trig 5/7 today

(3552) Parking options in West Markham looked to be few and far between, so opted for utilising Bevercotes Lane and walked down from there. At South Hills Farm I got talking to the landowner. Nice friendly guy who readily gave permission to visit the pillar, and pointed out the best way to get to it. Which was a simple matter of following the hedge line/field margin straight to it. Nothing to crawl through that way - nice! The landowner stated he took care to avoid it when working near it. And it shows, as the pillar is in great condition. All metal work present - centre cap with indented lettering. Good open views to the S and E with TP12320 being visible. Pillar history: Built on the 23th of September 1937, at a cost of £4 12s 7d. Last maintained by the OS in December of 1982.

Third of 3 on way home from afternoon at Rufford Abbey. This is a second attempt for me, as my attempt in May was aborted due to crops in field. No such issue this time as the field was harvested. On the plus side, this time I knew it was possible to drive all the way up the farm track and park in a field entrance nearest the trig. Up the hedge on the right hand side, as the trig is in the field margin rather that the hedge as the OS map suggests. Wife and dog stayed in car. Itchy.

Visited during a trigpoint-bagging bike ride. Pedalled up the rough lane from West Markham and walked up the field edge. NB I walked up the north side of the hedge, the pillar is situated on the south side so I had to nip through a gap in the hedge and around the corner to get to it. Pillar in good condition, seldom visited I suspect.

I walked up from Hall Farm at West Markham and accessed what I thought was the relevant field near its southern hedge line. It was a hard struggle to get along the field boundary because of rape and cow parsley. At the expected location, no sign of the pillar so had to find a hedge hole to crawl through to find the pillar just off a nicely cleared field edge on the other (south) side.

One of the very few left to visit on this OS map. Crossed the A1 from the Retford direction over the new flyover. I don't think I've been there since my cycle time trial days in the 80s when the then roundabout was a turn on several TT courses. Past West Markham church and continued beyond tarmac on to easily ridden stone surfaced road. At sweeping right hand bend there are two field accesses into adjacent fields with the hedge rising to the ridge. Up machinery tracks in barley field to right of hedge and ducked through gap in hedge at top of field. Pillar is only a short distance beyond a little distance out into field. Although not at a very high point there are wide views, and this seemed a very clear day.

Last trig of a long day, walked from 758722 via East Markham to West Markham, seeing two windmills in the distance, impressive how they project out of the landscape. Decided to see the working one, Tuxford Windmill, which was turning and had a delicious sarny (home-baked bread) with a pot of tea in the on-site cafe. They told me 30 additives are allowed in UK commercial bread...I never knew so much crap could be put in to supermarket loaves. Their bread contains none... I couldn't find the trig (no farm to ask permission at first) after wandering around with the Landranger map. I came back down and did manage to speak to a farmer, Robert, who almost took me to the trig. It was not his land but said his mate who owned the fields would not mind. Trig is 1 metre south of a W to E hedgeline. He was interested in what what they were for, and told me how farming had changed so much in the last 30 years. He said as a kid they thought they could see Doncaster racecourse from the top of a hayrick as they used to build. Village life had changed too, with rich newcomers who buy up property but take no part in the community. The area had also lost its social and commercial links with the closure of the pits since 1980. Very helpful, and set me off on a short cut across the fields back to Elkesley via Lound Hall and the site of the former Bevercotes pit. Thanks, Robert.
