Approached from MTB track NE of trig. Headed SW up the mapped firebreak which is initially bracken and brambles (luckily dead in November) but improves on the ascent. Due N of the trig another firebreak heads SE and then an easy push through trees to the pillar.

This was quite the adventure....I headed across from the crossroads of the yellow trail and joined up with the main track before turning up the brown route to the viewpoint...It was then a matter of donning the jacket hood up and hacking up through the thick wet conifers, crossing the old wall and on up. Found pretty quickly considering it is completely enveloped by the vegetation...It was then a matter of backtracking finding a slightly clearer route back down to the viewpoint and the walk out. Thankfully nobody was around to witness my emergence and I was able to brush off all but the slimy algae from my person.

Like many others before us, this pillar defeated us. We tried the Wayne Mc route of walking via the Mabie Forest yellow route but then just couldn’t find our way over to the trig. Got to within 300m but had to admit defeat. We’d done 7 miles and the dog 11 so cut our losses and went to the Mabie House hotel where we were allowed to sit in the reception with Hal and eat from the light bite menu! Lovely roaring fires dried us off a treat. Frustrated!

Think it’s in here somewhere?

From the main car park along the yellow path around lotus hill. Branched off the track to head direct to trig which was not as bad as what previous loggers have said. I found a very faint path through the trees and apart from pushing a couple of trees apart to get through it was fine. No views from the trig. If you get to NX9384 7086 a faint path sets off up the hill through tussocky ground and you eventually reach a wall which I went through. Then if you walk on 20/30 yards a faint path goes off through the trees, you have to push through here. It carries on faintly and eventually the trig comes into view. Then retraced my steps to the track I set off from from the previous Grid Ref. Follow this right along the track past a couple of benches for lunch and track heads down to the main track back to the car park passing Dalshinnie Loch and the Ghost Stane. The time of year helped me here. Would hate to attempt this in summer

Parked at Mabie Farm Park and walked up towards forest spotting the FC carpark on the way. Followed large forest tracks most of the way then a smaller 'cycle' track (beware this is a very active forest for cycling) and then up the firebreak to the trigpoint. Heavens opened then and we got soaked. Picked up a few geocaches on the way and enjoyed a hot cup of coffee from the Farm Park.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 13th March 1954 costing £31.4s.3d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NX99/14 within the Dumfries block during 1958. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision also in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in May 1988. SITE VISIT: Despite the maze of fancy waymarked paths, I did this following 1:25K & 1:50K maps, and because of all these unmapped paths I was getting hopelssly lost at first. Anyhow the trig is well beyond the reach of all the designer outdoor stuff and I had to fight through all sorts of vegetation. Finally resorted to GPS to locate pillar. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented lettering. Flush bracket faces north, straight into tree, compass measurement 357°. Vented through sight hole on FB face. Decided to decend via different route - add fight with windthrow to the equation.
