One day weather window, but decided too windy for bigger hills. Great parking B974 at 647868. Made path through lovely woods over Scollys Hill shoulder then R on track round Greystane Hill, past mast and up over Threestane Hill, path intermittent on this climb, to Mount Shade. Fast walking on great paths to Clachnaben and Trig, Hill of Edendocher and Sandy Hill. Short heather hop to these two summits. Great path to Mount Battock and Trig. Down E of fence on path S over Hill of Saughs then left track and along new fence to Stobie Hillock. Very rough ATV track all the way on NE of fence over Hill of Fingray to Shank of Mondair and Trig. Climbed deer fence to get to trig. Worse ground to Murmannoch and on peat hag ridge to Rough Hill. SE descent down Grouse butts and rough ATV track to Toughs Market Ford, which was very deep. Easy track back past Charr bothy to carpark. 34.5km, 1170m climb, 7:40 walking, 8:40 total.

The final trig of our three trig challenge and for Dementia UK 100K walk for March - after Sturdy Hill this one was hell - very uneven underfoot loads of peat hags to navigate - no gates or stiles in the deer fence - we were pretty tired once we got up and then suddenly realised we have to go back down again - 32k walk today phew it was challenging at the end but we showed great character and Tenacity to complete the challenge

Accessed from Glen Esk. Parked in a one vehicle ( reverse in) space approx 50 m past Greenburn Haugh on righthand side of road, Walked up past Hillock (no dogs) Easy walking on track to summit. Entertained on way by a group of 5 red kites all on the look out for dead pheasants and patridges...loads of live ones seen.Companion and I felt it was too early on a fine november day to just return to car so returned to ford at NO563795 and continued to Tom Darrach and then Craigangowan on estate tracks (apart from summits of both with required a bit of heather bashing and peat hag negotiation , particularly tthe latter). The way back down to the road was over a locked deer fence gate. Bit bizarre as locks were well rusted and there were no other barriers to the tracks and this was 2 miles from the road and at 500m. I noted that when I did Sturdy Hill that there was a prolification of new tracks hereabouts but not marked on the map. I hadn't continued to Mondair from Sturdy as it looked like peat hag hell but the tracks that we followed today would have made it ok. Spider on pillar intact and pillar in good condition.

Giving this a 7 due to the adventure getting to it. Approached this from Glen Dye over peat bogs peat hags rain and low cloud to be confronted by a deer fence but nothing was stopping Kasi the cocker and me getting to our goal

Up the track from Hillock initially scattering many partridges, pheasants, and surprisingly one peacock. Grand views from the top shared with a white hare. Cap in place with deep lettering, and one sight-hole open. Beautiful January day. Recently, I’ve been playing a song by Jackie Oates called ‘The Joy Of Living’ (written by Ewan MacColl). He wrote it in his 72nd year after failing to climb Suilven, and realising that his mountain-walking days were over. The song is a wistful and rather sentimental one, but seems to me to be a perfect hill-walker’s anthem. So I mused as I walked back down the hill.

What a lot of peat haggery between Mt Battock and here! Easy descent via track to road at Hillock where several very loud dogs stay, fortunately not loose.

Trig pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with stamped lettering. Flush bracket faces northeast. A substantial climb from Glen Esk, but rewarding views to Mount Battock, Clachnaben and Sturdy Hill once on top. Visited and photographed 28/06/2000, GRP.
