Walked along bank from the carpark at Eldernell. Many many sheep. Many previous logs considered this route boring, but if you go on a early summer evening, the scenery is genuinely beautiful.

After a morning of easy bags in fields or verges, here's a bit of a contrast. Parked to the west in Eldernell and walked the 2.5km (ish) to the pillar, across the top of a ridge which offered a wide and beautiful view all the way to the trig... but a view that never once changed! Was very relieved to reach the pillar, but a little footsore when I finally returned to my car!

A revisit of sorts as I had passed by this pillar a few years back when I walked the mind numbing stretch along by Morton's Leam whilst completing the Nene Way. Parked up in the small area at the end of Eldernell Lane and headed Eastwards along the flood bank. A mile and a half along the path sits the pillar. All that you would expect from a fenland trig, big skies and flat fields. There was quite a bit of flooding so there was a little bit of interest along the way watching the egrets and the like taking advantage of the expansive wetlands. The parking area was fairly full as apparently this is a good time of year for owl sightings and as it was, the words of a local, the first sunny day in living memory, many enthusiasts had flocked to bag an owl so to speak. Walking the 8 mile length of Morton's Leam is not much fun, but it must be infinitely better than the poor souls who had to dig it around 550 years ago.

Had looked at earth map of the area beforehand and had decided to take a chance by taking the turning north off the A605 for Poplar House Farm. Although missed turning on first approach from south west. Sign post was for Advantage or something like that, concrete driveway to industrial units. Worked out ok. Small car park by the dyke embankment at the north end of the lane. There was another car there already. Looking west along the top of the embankment, pillar was visible in the distance. Well, presumed it was the pillar. Pleasant walk. A couple of bird watchers were also walking along. Spider and cap in place. Good all round views across the fens , flooded fields to the north. Must be of historical significance as the name Morton’s Leam is in ancient script on the OS map.

Followed the road up past the agricultural machinery place to parking close to the bridge. Spotted a birdwatcher spotting birds. Walked along the top of the bank which was a pretty flat walk of around 1km. A nice pleasant walk only to find a polish fisherman having his lunch at the trig. We asked him to move his net and rod off the trig so we could get a photo and then chatted to him about the fishing around here. A lovely afternoon walk to blow away the cobwebs from the car incident in the morning. Cheers

I did the hard part and walked the 1.5 miles along the dyke braving one herd of bullocks. I then was beaten back by a second herd of larger animals that even started to walk towards me. Seems a little unfair to have so many large animals on a public track. Since I had done the hard part I reckon a moral visit.

I left the car in the carpark at Eldernell bridge and walked the mile and three quarters along the top of the dyke to the T/P. This pillar is in as good a condition as any I’ve so far logged. All the metalwork is in place, including the centre plug, which is of the deeply engraved variety. The views are just what you’d expect, being in the middle of the Fens. You can see for miles all round.
