Pulled over into track on east side of road about a mile north west of the A361. Pillar visible from the road on hilltop just north of the clump of trees with a couple of masts beyond. Fairly pleasant walk along track and uphill to picturesque knoll of beech trees. Windy day, made a terrific sound blowing through the trees. Over gate into sheep pasture to get to pillar. Good views. Cap missing. Sheep usually run off when they see someone nearby but these ones all came towards me. Probably expected to be fed. They were using the pillar as a scratching post. Base exposed, possibly from erosion and lots of sheep wearing away the soil.

Walked up via the Wansdyke, easy access via two gates. Having walked both Hadrian’s Wall and Offa’s Dyke, this is a seriously impressive and well comparable earthwork - the effort to construct it with only manual equipment! Suspect trig field has been incorporated into the adjacent nature reserve as it’s a lovely wildflower meadow this year. Great all round views on a beautiful sunny morning; trig in good condition if base very exposed, and centre open.
