Visited during a 9 mile circular hike with Dearne Valley Walking Group starting from Great Ayton. Lots of mud on the lower paths but the weather was good and the views were great. We also visited the Captain Cook Memorial on the same hike. The hike and the views were great but the pillar looked a bit sad with a poor and fading paint job that also covered the flush bracket. Bits of random graffiti didn't help and the centre cap was missing from the spider.

Land looked after by the National Trust. Made it into a circular walk by visiting the Shooting Box for a nice photo opportunity.

Pillar has new coat of paint. Spider plug missing. Whoever has done the paint job has painted over the flush bracket. Interesting graffiti dating back to 1878 on the surrounding bedrock.

It’s a cracking hill, with great views, somewhat spoiled by its inevitable popularity. Late morning on a bright, sunny Sunday wasn’t necessarily best time to visit it and avoid crowds! Must have been 3 dozen people or more on the summit, and ‘social distancing’ rules don’t seem to apply to hill tops. Or Middlesbrough in general probably, given its current infection rate...

A lovely looking hill, with lethal rock steps covered with mud due to incessant rain all day. Pillar can best be described as care worn with most of the top edges/corners chipped away; its dirty coat of white paint slightly relieved by a painting on the RHS face. Top cap missing, no plug, but asphalt residue; RHS sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Cloud down no views. 2 car parks in the village, one free, the other, nearest start of the walk, £2.50 for first 2 hours - avoided that one.

I got out up the Esk valley road but the road to Pickering was closed due to heavy snowfall. This forced me to return south on the A171 to the north of the moors. My satnav sent me down the A173 and I recognised Roseberry Topping snow covered and glistening under a blue sky. This was an opportunity not to be missed – I could also see the trigpoint. I parked in a layby and walked through the woods to the south – the paths were icy but conditions were not too bad till near the top. Fantastic views over the snow covered moors and over to Teeside. I came down the steep north face through deep soft snow – a great morning out.

I pulled into the car park at the end of Roseberry Lane, looked up at the ‘mini Matterhorn’ that dominated the eastern skyline and though “Oh Bum… Do I have to?” The answer, of course was “Yes”. Having had two fairly tough (for me, anyway) climbs at the previous two trigs, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. The walk up the lane was easy… the climb through the wood was steep, very steep and the crude steps didn’t help a great deal. The middle, open section, was just a drag. Then came the final push to the summit. That had me holding on with my hands at times and I was very glad to finally clamber over the lip onto the relatively flat area around the pillar, some 40 minutes after I left the car. There were already a few people up here and looking down, there were more on the way up. They can’t all be trig hunters so what on earth makes them tackle that insane climb… with young kids in tow and some with babies in back-packs. I guess it must be the view from up here…. It is spectacular. Judging by all the names and dates carved into the sandstone rock, there have been thousands up here over the years. After a brief rest, waiting for the kids to get off the pillar (and for my legs to start working again), I took a few photos. The pillar has suffered a bit over the years, the top is well chipped under numerous coats of white paint and the centre plug has been removed. Whatever the resulting hole was filled with has been punched through. Not too much graffiti at the moment, fortunately. Apparently, the hill was pretty much symmetrical up until 1914 when the southern end collapsed. Bet that woke the locals up!

Very busy on Roseberry Topping on this bright but windy Saturday afternoon - literally dozens of couples and families strolling up the various routes to the top. We took the direct route from the roadside car-park, scrambling up the impossibly steep first section before breaking onto the upper open parts. Trigpoint itself is lovely, having been recently repainted. Amazing views all the way across Middlesbrough, Guisborough, and even Hartlepool right in the distance. Very pleasant, and definitely one I'd revisit soon!
