3/3 of weekend helping son move back home, job reasons. On way back to Sheffield, so came off M1 and parked in nearby entrance to woodland on minor road from Quinton, gap in aforementioned hedge very useful. Surprisingly busy with visitors to the local woods. Had to pick way to trig in muddy field. Trig in good condition, but base covered with pallets and metal lugs on top had planks of wood attached...couldn't figure out why. No views as such, M1 noisy over hedge to immediate W.

I parked in a gateway on the Wootton Road approximately 200m from the pillar, and nipped over the road to assess access. A handy hedge gap let me into the field, and got me a good view of the pillar, but the harrowed and seeded arable field was starting to show green shoots, so I decided I didn't want to stomp any of it , and took photos of the trig from where I was at the field margin. The pillar is in good condition, but has acquired a couple of pallets and a woodem pole around it, I'm guessing perhaps it has been playing a part in some local children's game !

Bagged as YSM549 Salcey Forest. Stupid sat nav sent us on M1 and wanted us to access pillar from there. After a wee detour, we got to the correct road. Found a huge parking area and spotted a gap in hedge directly across from us. Went through and found the trig directly in front of us in middle of field. Followed the tram lines straight to the trig. A large piece of wood tied to the pillar and a load of wood dumped beside it.

On a previous drive-by we realised that this was in the middle of what we hoped was a ploughed field [ie not a drilled field] so chose to approach the trig under the cover of darkness! Thankfully we managed to do this with no irate farmer having noticed our torches, but we did try to keep to the tractor wheelmarks to minimise damage.

As mentioned before, this trig has a flag tied to it, so you can see it from the road even when the crops are high (this year it seems to be rapeseed). Trig appears to be in good condition with the holes around the top plug being used as threading points for the rope holding the flagpole up.

The crop had gone and the field was still stubble so we parked at the entrance to the reservoir and walked straight across to the trig (plenty of gaps in the hedge). The trig had a flag arrangement strapped to it - to alert the farmer to it's presence when the crops were high I presume. Plug with heavily indented letering.

Thwarted again. The new crop is now a sea of barley and needs visiting after the harvest. For a sereptitious visit to the M1 side first go down the forest tack running parallel to the field and then as best you can follow the motorway fence along to the field - the undergrowth is difficult but there is no fence to block entry to the field. The trig is still quite a way in to the field even from this side.
