From the N, parking at Salter's Gate and pleasant walk down on good track. Pillar has lost its centre cap, tube sealed with a replacement composite disc; LHD side sight hole open. Extensive panoramic moorland views.

Parked at the Demesne Mill Picnic Area in Wolsingham and completed a circular walk via Tunstall Reservoir and the trig. Nice sunny day, a host of different Raptors in the sky and the heather in full bloom made for excellent views all round.

Ran from Castle Hills over the heather to trigpoint, then 100m N to the indiscriminate summit, and on down for a loop of Tunstall reservoir, before climbing back up to the trig and back to Castle Hills

This is the nearest trig (as far as I can tell) to my home - I can't believe I've been walking on this fell for the last five years and I have only just discovered there is a trig point here!

My second visit, different route - from the A68 to the east at spot height 325, W along ROW past grouse butts till reached the main BW that runs N-S past the TP. Carried on S a bit after bagging the TP to make an almost circular route around the common. 4.7 miles total distance, 400ft of elevation gain. The route from the W over Tunstall Reservoir dam is shorter, but a lot steeper!

Short walk from the reservoir, plenty of parking on the road. We followed the farm track up through 2 sheep fields then along the top wall towards the heather. Slightly concealed but the view didn’t disappoint.

Plenty of route options to reach this TP, all of them looked to be good approaches, we chose the walk over Tunstall Reservoir dam as being the most unusual, it’s an impressive piece of engineering. Then up though an ancient woodland before heading E up a rough track then at the ridge of the hill turning S along a broad path across the moor. Extensive views in most directions. The TP is sat in a sea of heather, if I could make one recommendation it would be to come here in August when the heather is in full bloom, it must look amazing then.

Interesting walk over the dam at Tunstall Reservoir. Some heather burning going on over Wolsingham Common. Blue sky, cold and crisp underfoot. Trig commands a lovely spot with panoramic views.

Parked near Foresters Lodge then walked across dam wall. The footpath heads up very steeply to the Backhouse Bank farm then to the byeway on the ridge which we followed to the trig.

Walked from Wolsingham with friend up E side of Waskerley Valley to reservoir then up track to old railway line. South down green way on W side of valley taking in TP. Good walk, fabulous weather, excellent views.

A re-log of our closest trig-point to home (apart for the Wolsingham FBM). Walked up the Waskerley valley from Wolsingham, across the Tunstall dam and on to the felltop. The trig isn't at the highest point; it's placed on a stone platform in the peat for stability ?the remains of an old building or prehistoric cairn.... but nothing in the historic environment record to confirm this. Beautiful view up Weardale. A rather boggy return home via Thistlewood Lane.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th September 1947 costing £5.16s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NZ42/T37 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in December 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from SE. Drove along rough track from NZ092347 to nearest point where there is a turning circle. Direct route via mapped RoW. Grassy grazing moor. Pillar completed 18th September 1947 costing £5.16s.6d, still in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 192° SSW. Vented through SW sight hole. 270° open outlook, parts of southern aspect blocked by trees ~200m away. Photographed 24/07/2010. GRP.

Visible and easily accessible. Just off public footpath. I walked up from Wolsingham and then dropped down to Tunstall Reservoir which made it into a lovely walk. Pillar in good condition with plastic plug. Some lovely all round views of the surrounding area.
