Almost 'properly' bagged this trig, i.e. touch it, on the way back from near Cambridge after seeing my daughter and her delightful busy family. Like a lot of trighunters' experiences it was inaccessible, this time because of saloon car racing, so I had to make do with a look through the fence. My 9 score reflects the 'add ons': located by an F1 race track, carries a memorial plaque to the crew of a crashed WW2 Haliax bomber who died and the fact the trig was apparently used to mark out the airfield. I had a chat with a site marshall, he'd heard that the trig was moved to its current position when they were demolishing the RAF airfield after the war and building the race track. He also said there is a memorial service at the plaque every November to remember the dead. Frustrating.

A slight detour to get to the track. Coming from north along A43 motor racing circuit clearly signposted. Certain areas outside the main fenced circuit were accessible , rode around a bit before checking map carefully and looking on here. Pillar located to west of one of the grandstands inside the fenced area. Rode around to entrance where cars were going in but wasn’t allowed any further after asking security. Went away empty handed on this occasion. Revisit 8/2/25. Visited the Museum and went out onto trackside. Spoke to the museum door attendant and they didn’t deny access but turned a blind eye. Nipped behind stand to get over to pillar. It doubles as a memorial to lost air service crew who crashed at the site when it was an airfield during the war. Going by the high number probably a relatively late pillar. Spider and cap in place. Updated log and score.

Had a day of trig bagging with Steve Pennock, Trudge & Tracey, based around visiting the one at Silverstone. More than a year ago I read the entries of those who had visited and took their lead. I emailed Silverstone, they never replied. During a trip to Oxford I called at the security gate but wasn't entry. Finally, I found information about the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy. The one day in the Silverstone Calendar where entry is free. I had missed the opportunity in 2022 but today was that day in 2023. The pillar is sited on Luffield Corner and is well presented. It is one two memorials to commemorate those who served with the 17 OTU at Silverstone & Turweston, & the crew of a Halifax bomber that crashed at Silverstone. After bagging the trig we spent some time in the paddocks & trackside admiring pre war cars through to modern cars.

Really pleased to have had the opportunity to bag this one - Situated within the historic Silverstone circuit, I thought this may be one of those that would sit on the list and may never get ticked off - Wondering how I might get to see and bag this trig I decided to simply email Silverstone direct, after all, I had nothing to lose - I stated my intention and why I wanted to see it - A few days passed and I got a reply from the circuits Head of Security, who was on this occasion more than happy to facilitate me visiting the circuit - A few more emails were exchanged with the time and date of my visit being agreed - So yesterday morning (7th) at 10 am I arrived at Silverstone - The trig is a short walk from the main gate, just behind the stand on Luffield corner - Brilliant white in excellent condition as you'd expect due to its location - No real views to speak of, but then this trig was never about the views - The trig also bares a remembrance plaque to the crew of Halifax Mk.B-III Bomber LK-S (LW478) (pic attached) - Special mention & a massive thank you to Pete Downing, his security team & Silverstone for allowing me to bag this one

No scale factor was used (as requested by the FIA) and subsequent updates still use the same grid, so it could be said that this trig pillar is still very much in use!
